Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/18/19

I think I’m reading less comics these days. I don’t know if I’ve run out of time or if I keep running out of comics I actually enjoy. I’ve dropped most of the X-Men comics I’ve been reading. I dropped Amazing Spider-Man and didn’t pick up any of the other supplemental Spider-Man comics. I dropped a lot of DC Comics. Am I…am I falling out of love with comics?!

Let’s hope not. I think it’s just the current business practices of the Big Two.

Some solid comics this week, from War of the Realms to Go Go Power Rangers. Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of Tom King’s Batman, which I’m finally back to reviewing! I think it’s my favorite Tom King series ever, and he still brings the deep character drama.

Meanwhile, some big cancellation news this week. We’re losing Unstoppable Wasp again, which is a damn shame. Gonna miss that book. And the entire X-Men comics line is being cancelled to make way for Jonathan Hickman’s plans. I’m more excited about that…though now I fully regret buying all of X-Men: Disassembled and anything they’ve done since. Marvel’s X-Men relaunches get shorter and  shorter. And now all those character deaths really were meaningless. Unless it was part of Jonathan Hickman’s grand plan that Strong Guy be dead. If so, I feel personally attacked.

Comic Reviews: Batman #71, Giant-Man #1, Go Go Power Rangers #20, Guardians of the Galaxy #5 and The War of the Realms #4.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/11/19

It’s another one of those magical weeks where all of my favorite comics come out! Squirrel Girl! Unstoppable Wasp! Wonder Twins! How did I ever get so lucky? Well, this week turned out to be a bit of a stinker! But I might just be feeling salty this week for some reason.

Wonder Twins easily wins Comic Book of the Week! It’s not as strong an issue as the previous three, but both Squirrel Girl and Unstoppable Wasp let me down.

Meanwhile, I haven’t read one of Marvel’s Star Wars comics in awhile, but I snagged their new Boba Fett one-shot. I’m a big Boba Fett fan, and the issue was fine. A little rough around the edges, but otherwise fan. I do hope we get that movie about him someday…

Comic Reviews: Captain America #10, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #44, Unstoppable Wasp #7 and Wonder Twins #4.

Top 6 “Gold” Superheroes

What do you do when you can’t think of a good Pokemon themed List of Six to go along with the release of Detective Pikachu this week? You fall back on one of your own gimmicks and hope it’s good enough! That’s right, everybody! My lack of creative thinking this week has us falling back into the joys of a color theme List!

We did silver superheroes last time, so how about gold?

Gold List 01

I don’t own any gold. It would be nice to be rich, but I’m just a poor blogger and nobody loves me. But I’ve got comic books and I’ve got a bunch of nifty List of Six ideas! Like, isn’t it weird that some superheroes add a color to their code name to make it unique? Happens a lot! There’s my Silver List, my Blue List, my Green List and my Red List! It’s weird how often this happens!

Join me after the jump for the best comic book characters with the word ‘gold’ in their name.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/4/19

What else do I have to look forward to this year now that Avengers: Endgame is over? Spider-Man: Far From Home? I guess. But it’s just not the same…we live in a post-Endgame world now. And this week’s comics reflected that melancholy.

I was pretty hugely disappointed in the new issues of Young Justice and The War of the Realms. Both are OK, but the first is really weird and the second remains oddly shallow. The Green Lantern has another good issue to win Comic Book of the Week, but it’s one of those experimental issues where Grant Morrison likes to use illustrated prose.

Meanwhile, we’re this close to going back to reviewing Tom King’s Batman. The nightmare storyline is over and it was all largely good! So I’m excited to see this through to the end. Double meanwhile, I finally read King’s Sheriff of Babylon, for which he has received much praise. I thought it was fine. Probably flew over my head. But it’s definitely the work of Tom King.

Comic Reviews: The Green Lantern #7, The War of the Realms #3 and Young Justice #5.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/27/19

Avengers: Endgame was great! I’m not even going to beat around the bush. It was great, it was fantastic, it was everything I could have wanted. It’s the real deal, a true grand finale. Go watch it!

Comics this week almost pale in comparison. Action Comics and Runaways are pretty fun, while Fantastic Four and Heroes in Crisis disappoint. And Comic Book of the Week goes to Mr & Mrs X!

Meanwhile, X-Tremists is still the only comic I’m reading from Age of X-Man and it remains pretty darn good. At least when it comes to character development for the Blob, and now Psylocke, too! Honestly, I will consider Age of X-Man a win as a whole if this leads to a Blob renaissance.

Comic Reviews: Action Comics #1010, Fantastic Four #9, Heroes in Crisis #8, Mr. & Mrs. X #10 and Runaways #20.
