Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/10/15

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! The long national nightmare of Secret Wars is over, and the All-New, All-Different Marvel is upon us! Though, that isn’t exactly accurate. Secret Wars is not yet over, and will actually continue all the way into December. And it’s not a nightmare, I’m actually enjoying it. But the All-New, All-Different Marvel is definitely here in force this week! No longer do we have to rely on tie-ins or Star Wars comics to get our Marvel fix! We’ve got brand new first issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Invincible Iron Man and Doctor Strange, who, I guess, doesn’t deserve an adjective.

Comic Book of the Week goes to the first issue of the new Amazing Spider-Man, which only barely inches past the new Invincible Iron Man. Possibly because it includes the greatest cameo by the Prowler in a decade! Among other goodies.

It gets really good, people

Though this week isn’t all wine and roses. DC has launched their sequel to the henchly-reviled Batman Eternal! And like a pig to the slaughter, I picked that up too…

Comic Reviews: Action Comics #45, Amazing Spider-Man #1, Batman and Robin Eternal #1, Doctor Strange #1 and Invincible Iron Man #1.

Marvel Starts Rolling Out Their New Comics!

Secret Wars is going to come to an end eventually, and then Marvel Comics will have a whole new, refreshed universe to play with! We don’t yet know all the details — though we’ve seen hints — but because of early solicitations, Marvel has started letting us know what our comics books will be like this fall.

We already know about the new Invincible Iron Man. Over the weekend, we heard that Brian Michael Bendis and Sarah Pichelli are going to write Miles Morales in adjectiveless Spider-Man. And Kelly Sue DeConnick is leaving Captain Marvel.

Today we found out that Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo are going to launch a new Doctor Strange comic!

Thank god he’s bringing along that battle ax!

No big surprise there, considering the Doctor Strange movie coming up. It was only a matter of time before Marvel gave the good doctor his own book. And I’m beyond excited that Jason Aaron has the job. He’s one of my favorite writers at Marvel! His Thor comics have been amazing, so I’m confident he can really handle Doctor Strange.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Aaron said:

We wanted a Doctor Strange who was always having to work for what he gets, and to show that when he shows up and uses his powers, it’s not like Captain America throwing his shield or Thor throwing his hammer. Strange has to worry about repercussions that those other heroes don’t have to worry about, because he’s a Sorcerer Supreme. We’re talking about the forces of magic. So whatever he does has repressions.

Sounds like a neat take on Doctor Strange. I only hope Bachalo’s art does’t get so weird that we can’t make anything out. These preview pics look great, but we all know that Bachalo can get pretty wild.

Looking stylish!

Still, consider me on board this fall!

Marvel Just Won Everything With Amazing Movie Revelations!

Marvel just took DC to school today on how to court the press and the fans about their upcoming movies. Remember a few weeks ago, when we learned DC’s upcoming film slate? Everything from Wonder Woman to Justice League was leaked from a private shareholder’s meeting, and then DC hasn’t done anything since. No casting announcements. No official logos. Not a peep! We’re all just kind of stuck wondering if DC can actually pull it off.

But here comes Marvel with a big LA press conference, hyped for days, and filled to the brim with excited news media. As a fan, I am giddy! I’m excited! Marvel announced new movies for some less famous characters, but I am more confident in Black Panther and Captain Marvel movies than I am in Wonder Woman, Flash or Aquaman films. So take that, DC!

Make Mine Marvel!

There’s a lot of info and a lot of images. Marvel unveiled a metric ton of logs and film titles today.

So join me after the jump for a full rundown on all of the news and my reactions! And pretty please, share what you think in the comments! I hope you henchies are just as excited as I am!

Benedict Cumberbatch is an Ideal Doctor Strange!

Word is spreading like wildfire today that British thespian Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as Doctor Strange for the upcoming movie! I couldn’t be happier! Seriously, I think he’s the perfect choice for the Sorcerer Supreme, on multiple levels!

Though I’m not sure about a Cumber-beard

Deadline broke the news, and several other agencies are picking it up. They say Cumberbatch is in final negotiations, and I’m fairly certain Deadline has been right about a lot of Marvel’s casting over the months, so this is probably a lock. Woot!

I’m a huge Cumberbatch fan. I first saw him on Sherlock, obviously, which is one of my favorite shows. He’s stellar as the title character, even in these later seasons. I liked him on Star Trek Into Darkness, one of my top two favorite movies last year. And he’s great as the dragon Smaug in the Hobbit films. I haven’t seen any of his smaller, personal work, but who needs to? Cumberbatch has presence, and that’s important!

First of all, he really seems like he’d fit the character. He’s aristocratic, with very noble mannerisms. He’s also more than a little odd. That seems like a solid Doctor Strange to me.

He’s drinking tea, that’s totally British!

Second of all, people love Cumberbatch! He’s huge with female audiences, which sounds perfect for a Marvel film! He’s got a built-in fanbase who probably already enjoy the Marvel movies, so this team-up sounds like a no-brainer.

So consider me totally on board with this casting! What do you guys and gals think? And check out my list of the 6 things I want to see in the Dr. Strange film!
