Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/12/22

What a week, people! This might be one of the most joyous weeks in comics I’ve ever had. We got a new Multiple Man Marvel Unlimited comic this week, Strong Guy gets in on the action in Secret X-Men and then we’ve got the mother of all team-ups!

Comic Book of the Week goes to Amazing Spider-Man #88.BEY for bringing together some of my favorite obscure characters for a delightful comic! I’m so glad my obscure favorites aren’t being needlessly murdered for once! Let’s here it for Hornet and the Slingers!

Goosebumps

Meanwhile, I’ll have a review up next week on the first season of The Book of Boba Fett. Pretty underwhelming, if you ask me, but otherwise fine. Then the week after, I want to do a review of the first season of Peacemaker, because that show is amazing! Why couldn’t James Gunn have made a Boba Fett TV show? Oh well. In other news, I’m enjoying Pokemon Legends: Arceus just fine.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #88.BEY, Batgirls #3, Mighty Morphin #16, Robins #5 and Secret X-Men #1.

6 Things I Want to See in a New Spider-Man Movie Trilogy

Spider-Man: No Way Home was an awesome movie and a great origin story for actor Tom Holland to truly become a classic Spider-Man. In a perfect world, Holland would be 100% on board with keeping the character moving forward, giving us another full trilogy or series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The powers that be at Marvel and Sony have said they’re already working on a new trilogy, though Holland has been real cagey about his involvement.

I need to watch this movie again

Assuming we do get Tom Holland back in the spider-tights and we continue the story of the MCU Peter Parker, what are we going to get? The ending to Spider-Man: No Way Home is rather perfect to springboard into more movies, and there is a ton of Spider-Man content from the comics we could explore. Also in this perfect world of mine, Marvel Studios actually reads this blog and takes some of my ideas! So what do I, a major fan of the MCU and Spider-Man in general, want to see in a future Tom Holland trilogy of films?

Join me after the jump for some of my ideas. I’ll try to keep SPOILERS for No Way Home to a minimum, but definitely don’t read if you don’t want to know anything about the movie. And feel free to share your own thoughts and hopes in the comments!

The Slingers Are Coming Back and All My Dreams Are Real

Today is a good day in the world of comics. The Slingers are coming back. Who are the Slingers? They’re some of my all-time favorite obscure comic book characters, from a truly delightful comic I read and loved in the 1990s. They were a quartet of teen heroes using costumed identities developed by Spider-Man during the Identity Crisis storyline. It’s not worth getting into. They were just a team of cool superheroes who had a very short-lived comic back when I was just getting into comics, and then they largely faded into obscurity, only popping up here and there in random cameo appearances throughout the years.

Well now they’re coming back for another such cameo in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man as part of the current Spider-Man Beyond storyline.

I’m very excited. It’s going to happen in the new year, and I’m enjoying the new Amazing Spider-Man storyline. This should be a lot of fun. We don’t yet know the identities of the Slingers that will appear. One assumes they will be themselves…except for one very, very important distinction.

Hobie Brown is going to be the new Hornet.

I know, I’m excited too.

This has actually been in the works for a while now, but I haven’t done an article on it for some reason. Now is my chance.

So in the original Identity Crisis storyline, Peter Parker turned to his old friend Hobie Brown — a.k.a. The Prowler — to make him a new costumed superhero suit. Hobie designed the Hornet outfit. Then when the Slingers got together and had their own comic, new hero Eddie McDonough took on the Hornet identity. He was my favorite of the crew…which, of course, is why he was later killed off in one of their random cameo appearances. Sigh.

Anyway, the Slingers came back before as part of Peter David’s Ben Reilly comic a couple of years ago. In a really strange bit of storytelling, the new Hornet in this story was actually Cyber, that classic Wolveirne villain with the Adamantium arms. Weird, right? Of all the secret identities of the new Hornet, PAD went with Cyber?!

After that whole storyline came to an end, the Slingers went silent for a while…until that big King in Black storyline with Knull and Venom. In one of the many spin-off comics, it was revealed that Hobie Brown took up the Hornet identity!

And this Hobie Brown version of the Hornet is going to be the one joining the Slingers in this upcoming Spider-Man Beyond storyline. I think that’s really cool!

I love Hobie Brown, I love Hornet, I love the Slingers; for once in my comic book-loving life, characters and concepts I like are actually coming together to create something awesome instead of just getting killed or whatever usually happens to characters I like.

Of course, I will point out that it’s a little disappointing that Hobie isn’t still the Prowler. Not too long ago, Marvel actually had two active Prowlers in their comics, both Hobie and then Ultimate Prowler, Aaron Davis. I can see why Marvel would want Aaron Davis to be their one and only Prowler, since he’s been the Prowler in movies and is far more well known by general audiences. But…SPOILERS…Aaron Davis is dead. He was killed in a recently Miles Morales comic. So there’s no conflict if Hobie wanted to keep being the Prowler in the comics.

But that’s just me. I’m very excited to see the Slingers come back. I’m very excited to put Hobie Brown and Hornet to good use. And I can’t wait to read these new comics next year!

A Tale of Two Prowlers

A problem eight years in the making has finally arrived: Marvel now has two competing, nearly identical, and yet completely unrelated Prowlers kicking around New York City. It’s a weird problem, and I think Marvel has come up with a simple fix. Being one of the internet’s foremost Prowler fans, I felt compelled to point this out to everybody.

Marvel has offered various workarounds for awhile, but based on the current storyline in Miles Morales: Spider-Man, they’re apparently just going to barrel on through.

Miles’ uncle, Aaron Davis, is once again calling himself the Prowler.

Two Prowlers 10

Even though the original Prowler, Hobie Brown, is still around and working with Spider-Man.

Two Prowlers 11

Apparently that purple and green look is too good to pass up! These two images came from two different comics released the exact same day back in August. It was the most Prowler-heavy week in comics in years.

This is what happens when you crash universes together. It’s not a safe practice for anybody.

So how did we get here and where do we go from here? I’m glad you asked! Join me after the jump for A Tale of Two Prowlers.

HOLY CRAP! We’re Finally Getting a Proper Multiple Man Action Figure!

Praise be to everything holy in the world! We’re finally getting a proper-sized Multiple Man action figure! We’re finally getting a Marvel Legends Multiple Man! I’m gonna buy 3! No! I’m gonna buy 10!

Madrox Figure 01

It’s obviously not his best costume, but I’ll take it! At least he’s got the trench coat, and it’s not that silly green original costume. Your guess is as good as mine why they didn’t go with any of his modern looks. This body was probably easier to sculpt than the T-shirt and jeans look.

The figure was revealed at New York Comic-Con today and I am over the moon! Longtime readers of this blog will recall my ongoing campaign for Multiple Man merchandise. It just makes sense. If his super-power is to create multiple copies of himself, people are going to buy multiple action figures! That’s more sales for a single character! Duh!

Anyway, this is thrilling news. If anybody needs a Christmas or birthday present idea for me for the next few years, I will gladly accept multiple copies of this action figure. That’s the whole point!

We’re also getting a pretty awesome Prowler action figure. He’s another favorite character of mine.

Prowler Figure 01

So this was a pretty great comic-con for action figures!
