The 6 Funkiest Knock-Off M.O.D.O.K.s

Against all odds, the M.O.D.O.K. TV show arrives on Hulu this week! The only survivor of that wave of wacky Hulu shows Marvel TV announced a couple years ago, M.O.D.O.K. looks to be a fun and super-weird family comedy starring Patton Oswalt. It all sounds great to me! And to celebrate, we’re gonna look at some funky M.O.D.O.K.s!

Looks just like Patton Oswalt!

M.O.D.O.K. stands for “Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing”. He’s been around since the late 1960s, a creation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. And as you can see, he’s this giant head dude in a mechanized chair! Heck, he was the big bad villain in that recent failed Avengers video game. The dude has chops. He’s put in the work over the decades. And a new TV show starring him as a suburban dad sounds like the apex of his career!

Over the years, there have been a ton of knock-off M.O.D.O.K.s in comics. With an acronym for a name, it’s easy to come up with knock-offs. And we’re going to take a look at the best ones! Join me after the jump for some M.O.D.O.K. madness!

The New LEGO Daily Bugle is a Menace to My Wallet!

Be still my geeky heart, LEGO debuted a gigantic Daily Bugle set yesterday! This thing is a beast, with like a dozen mini-figures, multiple settings and just so much going on that the picture I’m posting does not do it justice!

Leap it in a single bound!

Go to the official LEGO site and zoom in on some of these pictures, people. This is a thing of beauty!

Of course, this massive LEGO set is also going to set a person back $300. Will I pay that much for this giant LEGO dreamscape? Maybe…I haven’t decided yet. It comes out on June 1, so I have time to mull it over. The biggest problem is that I don’t have anywhere to display it. I’ve already got LEGO models on the floor in my little apartment because I don’t have table or shelf space anymore.

But this is still beautiful! There’s a bunch of heroes, including Spider-Ham, Daredevil and Miles Morales, and a ton of villains, including most of the original Sinister Six, like Sandman, Doctor Octopus and the likes of both Venom and Carnage. They even through in some anti-heroes like Punisher, Blade and Black Cat! How neat! Plus civilians like J. Jonah Jameson and Robbie Robertson. There’s a Robbie Robertson LEGO!

Behold the fire escape!

A LEGO Marvel set this size opens up a lot of potential going forward. Marvel hasn’t done too great with LEGO in recently years…largely because Marvel doesn’t have a lot of vehicles, and they were staying away from the likes of the X-Men and Fantastic Four for a while for stupid reasons. But perhaps we’ll get a Baxter Building one of these days? I’m holding out for an X-Mansion for damn sure. There’s so much potential for good X-Men LEGO!

Here’s hoping my wallet can survive the experience!

A Snake Eyes Movie Defeats the Point

Snake Eyes is my favorite G.I. Joe, which is not some shocking revelation. Isn’t Snake Eyes everybody’s favorite G.I. Joe? The point is, part of me is excited about this movie. While another part of me will rightfully point out that Snake Eyes was cool because he was this silent, faceless, mystery ninja! That was his whole deal, and he stood out in the crowded Joe field.

But for reasons known only to the franchise gods, we’re getting Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins.

This teaser trailer looks coolish. Could be fun some fight scenes. Henry Golding is a cool guy. A couple other classic Joe characters will be appearing. And they’re following the tradition of mixing martial arts with hip hop. Good stuff.

But the sheer lunacy of this movie existing is really something to think about. The first two G.I. Joe movies didn’t exactly set the world on fire, and they had their own Snake Eyes. Is this movie a prequel to those movies? I don’t think so and I hope not. But then is this movie going to spark a whole new franchise of G.I. Joe films? Are we going to get “Origins” movies for Bazooka and Duke and Falcon and Tunnel Rat and Tollbooth and Chuckles and Lady Jaye? Honestly, I would be completely in favor of this, especially if Hollywood then teams them all up for an Avengers-style film.

Whatever the future brings, we are getting a movie about Snake Eyes’ no-longer-mysterious origin on July 23.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/15/21

It’s the week I’ve been waiting nearly a year for! X-Corp has finally been released and Multiple Man, my favorite comic book character, is back in regular comics! What a joyous day! Too bad it had to go up against a new issue of Mighty Morphin. That comic can’t be beat!

Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Morphin #7 for another jam-packed issue full of neat characters, great story twists and the new Green Ranger!

Tommy once again fighting a Green Ranger

Meanwhile, I’m still reading and skimming through the new Heroes Reborn big event from Marvel and I’m really digging it! The comics feel like a spiritual sequel to Amalgam Comics. They’re based on the lighter, more chipper tone of comics from the Amalgam era, and they’ve even got callbacks and references to “other” comics from the “canon”, like Amalgam used to do! For example, one of the comics features what is supposed to be a preview for a new Starjammers comic “coming soon”. And these comics are full of cute crossover/merged character appearances and cameos, like Johnny Storm of the Nova Corps! So yeah, I’m having fun with Heroes Reborn so far!

Comic Reviews: Children of the Atom #3, Mighty Morphin #7, X-Corp #1 and X-Factor #9.

Enjoy Another Funny CEO Video

College Humor is kinda, sorta clawing its way back! I was a big fan of the sketch comedy crew before they all got unceremoniously fired at the start of 2020. And I’m still subscribed to their Dropout streaming service, because I like what they’re putting out. Well, slowly but surely, College Humor is coming out with fun new videos. Mostly in their popular CEO running gag from Brennan Lee Mulligan.

They’re funny, and there’s a new one based on a hardware store. I’m all about sharing funny things!

And if that isn’t enough, here’s one they did last month about the CEO of Oreo.

Good comedy is good comedy and should always be shared. If you’ve never seen these videos before, there’s a whole bunch of CEO sketches from over the years. It’s a fun gag.
