Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/4/19
What else do I have to look forward to this year now that Avengers: Endgame is over? Spider-Man: Far From Home? I guess. But it’s just not the same…we live in a post-Endgame world now. And this week’s comics reflected that melancholy.
I was pretty hugely disappointed in the new issues of Young Justice and The War of the Realms. Both are OK, but the first is really weird and the second remains oddly shallow. The Green Lantern has another good issue to win Comic Book of the Week, but it’s one of those experimental issues where Grant Morrison likes to use illustrated prose.
Meanwhile, we’re this close to going back to reviewing Tom King’s Batman. The nightmare storyline is over and it was all largely good! So I’m excited to see this through to the end. Double meanwhile, I finally read King’s Sheriff of Babylon, for which he has received much praise. I thought it was fine. Probably flew over my head. But it’s definitely the work of Tom King.

6 Thoughts on Avengers: Endgame
Ten years have come and gone in the blink of an eye. I can still remember the events surrounding that original Iron Man film in 2008, and my going to see it at the midnight release. I can still remember the popularity of that first trailer, and the Onion article mocking that popularity. Oh how far we’ve come, and how how great the journey has been!
I loved Avengers: Endgame 3000.

Movie Rating: 10/10 – Fantastic
I have a feeling my thoughts on this film might change as time goes on. I viewed Infinity War a bit more harshly last year than I eventually settled on, and I mellowed out more on Black Panther. The same could happen here. But having seen Avengers: Endgame twice in the opening weekend, I’m very pleased with the film and everything it had to offer. It’s not perfect, and I’ve got some nitpicks, but overall it was everything we could have wanted from the Infinity Saga finale.

Avengers: Endgame was great! I’m not even going to beat around the bush. It was great, it was fantastic, it was everything I could have wanted. It’s the real deal, a true grand finale. Go watch it!
Comics this week almost pale in comparison. Action Comics and Runaways are pretty fun, while Fantastic Four and Heroes in Crisis disappoint. And Comic Book of the Week goes to Mr & Mrs X!
Meanwhile, X-Tremists is still the only comic I’m reading from Age of X-Man and it remains pretty darn good. At least when it comes to character development for the Blob, and now Psylocke, too! Honestly, I will consider Age of X-Man a win as a whole if this leads to a Blob renaissance.
Comic Reviews: Action Comics #1010, Fantastic Four #9, Heroes in Crisis #8, Mr. & Mrs. X #10 and Runaways #20.

By this time next week, I will have seen Avengers: Endgame and all will be right in the world. I can’t wait. I’m very excited. Let’s hope I’m not too excited!
Until then, we’ve got to read some fun comics, like Guardians of the Galaxy and the final issue of West Coast Avengers! The War of the Realms also continued this week! But Comic Book of the Week goes to the big, climactic issue of Tony Stark – Iron Man for a solid, enjoyable story.
Meanwhile, my skimming of new Uncanny X-Men issues reaffirms my correct decision to drop them. More characters I like are dead. Though if my brother is reading this, he might be slightly pleased to know that the original Pyro has been stealth returned to the living…though apparently as a one-note bad guy. I’m working on a larger Pyro article, I promise.
Comic Reviews: Guardians of the Galaxy #4, Magnificent Ms. Marvel #2, Tony Stark – Iron Man #10, War of the Realms #2 and West Coast Avengers #10.

Comic release schedules have morphed into a weird track for me. How is it that all of my current favorite comics come out in the exact same week, forced to battle it out for Comic Book of the Week? Nearly any of the comics I read this week could have trounced some of the garbage I read other weeks.
As much as I’ve been loving Wonder Twins — and this week saw another stellar issue — an old champion has revealed it still has legs and comedy chops! Unbeatable Squirrel Girl wins Comic Book of the Week for a really fun and funny tie-in to War of the Realms!
Meanwhile, the new issue of Batman featured interior art by Amanda Conner, one of my favorite comic book artist of all time. I’m quite pleased with the issue, which sees the bachelor party of Catwoman, wherein she and Lois Lane party at the Fortress of Solitude. Unfortunately, I did not review the issue because Batman remains trapped in a weird dream prison thing, so I’m finding each individual issue difficult to grade. Fun stuff, though.
Comic Book Reviews: Go Go Power Rangers #19, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #43, Unstoppable Wasp #6, Wonder Twins #3 and X-23 #11.
