Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews -7/27/19
Comic books were on fire this week! A bunch of my favorites came out, including previous favorites that I no longer like! Magnificent Ms. Marvel was another terrible issue, while Tony Stark – Iron Man was another great issue! And we’ve got a strong first issue for the new Jane Foster Valkyrie comic!
This week also saw the big kick-off to Jonathan Hickman’s revamp of the X-Men with House of X #1. I had high hopes for this relaunch…and the first issue delivers in spades! Easily Comic Book of the Week as it ushers in a crazy new X-Men status quo!
Meanwhile, sad news for Champions fans as it has been cancelled. Writer Jim Zub is a stand-up guy, so I’m sad to see his plans fall apart. But count me among the readers that just didn’t connect with the title. Sorry Jim!
Comic Reviews: Guardians of the Galaxy #7, House of X #1, Magnificent Ms. Marvel #5, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #41, Tony Stark – Iron Man #14 and Valkyrie #1.

Happy San Diego Comic-Con Week! Once again, I am not at the big event. Someday I’ll get out there. But for now, I’m sitting home and reading comics — of which there weren’t many, at least not on my reading pile.
Still, I got to read a big, exciting issue of Batman, kicking off the City of Bane. And Matt Fraction has returned to mainstream comics with Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen! That’s a hoot! Comic Book of the Week goes to the final issue of Unstoppable Wasp, which is delightful and a good send-off.
Meanwhile, another horrible mini-era of the X-Men has come to an end and I’m glad. I didn’t read Age of X-Man so it’s not really fair to criticize it, but I’m pretty sure it’s widely regarded as inconsequential. And the much ballyhooed Uncanny X-Men relaunch turned into hot garbage pretty quickly. So many characters were ruthlessly murdered, and for what? I don’t even have the energy to do an entire blog post on the fact that they killed Fake Madrox offscreen in this week’s issue. Just ugh. Bring on the Hickboot!
Comic Reviews: Batman #75, Jimmy Olsen #1 and Unstoppable Wasp #10.

Welcome, to the world of comics! Buncha fun reads this week, from Batman to the new era of Go Go Power Rangers. Most monumental is the temporary return of X-Statix! Against all odds! I’m excited to see where that book goes, but for now it’s just a simple reintroduction.
Comic Book of the Week goes to the final issue of Wonder Twins for a really enjoyable, meaningful ending to this short but sweet mini-series. Thankfully, we’ll be getting more from this comic in a couple of months!
Meanwhile, the War of the Realms is over and now is the time for aftermath stories! I skipped the Omega issue out this week, because it was just short advertisements for upcoming series. I might check out the new Valkyrie. We’ll see. The new issue of the regular Thor series was a fun coda. We finally get that nice Thor/Odin moment we’ve all been waiting for, so that’s nice.
And the second issue of Event Leviathan was actually really well done. I’m legit excited for that comic now, thanks to issue #2.
Comic Reviews: Batman #74, Black Cat #2, Giant-Sized X-Statix #1, Go Go Power Rangers #21 and Wonder Twins #6.
6 Thoughts on Spider-Man: Far From Home
What an amazing movie! Our faith in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has once again been affirmed with another spectacular Spider-Man movie! The decision to hand over the reigns of Spidey to Marvel has worked out well for everyone involved, especially us, the viewers! Spider-Man: Far From Home is another winner!
Movie Rating: 9/10 – Great.
Far From Home works as a stand alone Spider-Man movie, it works as a follow-up to Avengers: Endgame and it works as a commentary on the legacy of Tony Stark! It works as a showcase for new villains, it works as a showcase for new talent; it’s an all around quality production from top to bottom.
Stop me if I’m gushing too much. Or don’t stop me, I don’t care! I’m an avowed Marvel Studios fanboy and I do not apologize for that! Join me after the jump for my full review/thoughts on Spider-Man: Far From Home! Expect FULL SPOILERS for the movie!

Happy Fourth of July Weekend, henchies! I spent my Fourth watching a Stranger Things season 3 marathon inside my air-conditioned apartment, and it was great! Then I went and saw Spider-Man: Far From Home for a second time last night. Good week for me!
In terms of comics, we’ve got some interesting new titles in Aero from Marvel and Lois Lane from DC, one far better than the other. Perhaps Marvel should have hired Greg Rucka to introduce Aero? Either way, Comic Book of the Week goes to Unbeatable Squirrel Girl for a truly excellent finish to their War of the Realms crossover!

In this week’s comics, an Asgardian squirrel goddess tries to talk to whales, and Lois Lane attends a press briefing at the White House
Meanwhile, did you hear that The Walking Dead comic came to a surprise ending this week?! How gnarly was that? I don’t read issue-to-issue, choosing instead to just borrow my friend’s compendiums. But I still applaud the sheer gaul of a surprise ending out of nowhere like that, even if it probably screwed over some retailers…
Comic Reviews: Aero #1, The Green Lantern #9, Lois Lane #1 and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #46.
