Review: Godzilla

As I walked out of the theater after seeing the new Godzilla film, it occurred to me that there is a very big difference between ‘monster movies’ and ‘Godzilla’ movies: in Godzilla movies, He’s on our side. The original Godzilla film from the 50s was a monster movie. The American remake in the 90s was a monster movie. But all of the classics, the films that made Godzilla a household name, they’re Godzilla movies. They were about this larger than life monster standing tall, kicking ass and fighting the good fight. And that’s the kind of magic that director Gareth Edwards has brought back to the King of the Monsters.

The new Godzilla is an exhilarating film once the Big Guy arrives in all his glory. It takes a little while to get there, and the human element of the film is a little underdeveloped, but the climactic battle in the streets and skyscrapers of San Francisco more than makes up for the long wait.

Movie Rating: 9/10 – Great.

If I were to really look at the new film closely, I would say that it is very underdeveloped. The human characters, the monsters, the plot; none of it gets very deep, emotional or philosophical. About two-thirds into the film, I was ready to write it off as simply ‘good’ or just generally enjoyable. But then the finale kicks into high gear, and all of those concerns wash away. Edwards brings his Godzilla center stage after teasing him for the whole movie. There are snippets of the monster throughout the film, and you first see Godzilla in all his glory about halfway through. But it isn’t until the final battle that we really see Godzilla cut loose and become the movie monster we know and love – and it’s amazing! The final fight alone elevates this film into one of the best summer blockbusters in years.

I Demand More Dinobots!

Considering the mess that Transformers 4: Age of Extinction is probably going to be, why can’t Michael Bay just promise us a ton of Dinobot action? Like, can they just show up mid-way through the movie and rampage over everybody, good and evil, until the day is saved?

Why do we even need Mark Wahlberg?

And when I say ‘Dinobots’, I don’t just mean Grimlock, who features heavily in this trailer. I want to see the whole gang! I want to see Slag, Sludge, Snarl and Swoop wrecking all manner of stuff. If we don’t get at least one robotic, transforming stegosaurus in this film, then what’s the point?

Though I suppose I will settle for the fact that John Goodman will be voicing one of the new Transformers. I am so into that.

Godzilla Day Continues!

Why don’t we just keep reveling in Godzilla awesomeness today, eh? Who’s with me! Check out the Honest Trailer for the 1990s Godzilla film, from our friends at Screen Junkies.

I am not blind to the horribleness of this movie, but I still like it. So sue me.

And for kicks and giggles, how about we watch Everything Wrong With Godzilla from Cinema Sins?

I hope everybody loves these movie takedowns as much as I do.

6 Monsters to Fight in the New Godzilla Franchise

I loved Godzilla movies when I was a kid. I know it’s kind of cliche, but it’s the absolute truth. I was never into the message or the themes, I just loved watching the Big Guy beat down on the likes of Hedorah the Smog Monster or the Sea Monster whose name I never learned. This stuff was the ultimate entertainment for little kids! And then there were movies where Godzilla teamed up with Mothra and Rodan, and those were my favorites because I love sidekicks. But Godzilla himself was always King of the Monsters.

Godzilla is and was just the coolest thing ever.

Suck it, Barkley!

So you better believe I’m excited about the new movie this weekend. Heck, I still kind of like that terrible Godzilla movie from the 90s! But the one thing that 90s movie didn’t have – and I’m pretty sure this new one does – is the idea of Godzilla fighting other monsters. Threatening humanity is all well and good, as are the lessons we can learn about nature and nuclear power, but we fans want to see Godzilla pitched in epic battle with evil monsters!

Godzilla is the biggest superhero of all time. And if this new movie leads to a whole franchise, here are my picks for six classic Godzilla beasties who should be brought back.

Batman Will Be Toning Down the Ears

Behold, the first official picture of the new Batsuit for the Batman vs. Superman sequel! Theoretically, that’s Ben Affleck under the cowl.

Batman hates color

I like it! I like the shorter ears. I like the toughness of the costume. I like that it looks more like his traditional costume than some highly detailed, interconnected armor like from the Dark Knight trilogy. I hope we get to see a clearer picture eventually, but as for this first image, Tweeted by director Zack Snyder, I like it!

For an even better look, check out this Reddit thread where a guy colorized the photo to get a much clearer image!

And what’s that in the background? It’s the Batmobile! Snyder posted this picture yesterday.

Dat ass

I like the look of the Batmobile too.

So yeah, even though I really didn’t like Man of Steel, I’m digging all this Batman stuff.

Now then…give us Robin!
