My 6 Favorite Fantasy Races
Hey everybody! Do you ever get several months into a seemingly never-ending global pandemic, where you work from home every single day and life and work and fun all blend together in yet another seemingly never-ending cacophony of horrible drudgery? No? Me neither! So here’s a quickie list I slapped together just last night because I couldn’t really feel anything this week. Let’s talk about fantasy races!
I heard a couple weeks ago that the people behind Dungeons & Dragons are going to get rid of the idea of inherently “evil” races, so that makes this list somewhat topical. I hope. And if not, whatever, this is fun stuff to talk about. But the thing about me is that I never played Dungeons & Dragons to begin with, and I never read J.R.R. Tolkien. So my thoughts on fantasy races come from a mish-mash of video games like Warcraft, the Lord of the Rings movies and maybe some Harry Potter thrown in for no particular reason? I’m also hoping this makes for a more interesting list than some academic study of fantasy races and their deeper themes and meanings. I just like’em cause they’re cool in that game I played!
I shoulda paid scalper prices for that Nintendo Switch…

I was a huge Power Rangers fan back in the day. The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was my jam after school! It could also be argued that I’m an even bigger Power Rangers fan now, what with the truly excellent comics coming out of BOOM! Studios: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and its sister series, Go Go Power Rangers. Both comics are getting rebooted later this year, so now is a good time to talk about the elephant in the room.
This is Matthew Cook, or “Matt” to his friends the Power Rangers.
Matt was introduced in the very first issue of Go Go Power Rangers in late 2017. The series was a “Year One” style comic about the early days of the original Mighty Morphin team, and Matt was a big surprise twist. Writer Ryan Parrott revealed that the original team of friends that became the Power Rangers had another friend in the group who got left out. In fact, Matt was Kimberly’s boyfriend, and he introduced her to the group.
How crazy must that have been for Matt? Not only is Angel Grove attacked by monsters, but his friends and girlfriend suddenly start distancing themselves from him, clearly keeping a big secret that they’re apparently not going to share. Matt was involved in one storyline early on where Rita Repulsa kidnapped him and replaced him with an evil clone to torment the Rangers. And he did eventually find out that they were Power Rangers. But since then, Matt has mostly existed as a side character who occasionally chats with Kimberly when they pass in the hallway.
Surely Parrott and BOOM! have something more planned. Parrott will still be writing both in the upcoming relaunch; surely he has something epic and mind-blowing planned for Matt as a character. Why introduce such an interesting wrinkle in the history of the original Power Rangers if you’re not going to iron it out eventually? Surely Parrott has been building to something monumental…right?!
Join me after the jump for six crazy theories of what fate might have in store for Matt, the non-Ranger.

It’s that time of year again: San Diego Comic-Con! Except the world sucks and those of us in America are going to die from a horrible virus that’s ravaging our dumbest states! Comic-Con, like everything else, was cancelled this year. They’re going to make a lot of big announcements virtually, and I’ll still report on them on this blog if they’re fun enough. But really, the main thing I care about is my annual tradition of fan-casting a superhero team!
And since San Diego Comic-Con is not real this year, then neither is my superhero team! Meet the Secret X-Men!
So basically, ever since Dawn of X revived and relaunched the X-Men franchise, we have seen all manner of new X-Men comics come and go. We’ve got X-Men, New Mutants, X-Force; we had Fallen Angels for a bit, and we’ve got Marauders and maybe the Hellions; a new X-Factor is supposed to be coming out. There’s a ton of freestyle X-Men books, is what I’m saying. Me being the creative chap that I am came up with one of my own: Secret X-Men. And since it’s probably far too late for me to get my foot in the door of Krakoa to pitch this idea to Marvel, I’m just going to make a fan-casting blog post about it!
I’ve done a bunch of these over the years. They’re basically just a fantasy game where I get to write some major team comics and pick my own roster. Last year was Guardians of the Galaxy. I’ve done the core X-Men team. I’ve done my version of X-Force. I’ve done the Avengers, the Justice League, the Fantastic Four, the Teen Titans, the Defenders and the Exiles. So enjoy those old lists and join me after the jump for my idea and the team roster of the Secret X-Men!
And feel free to share your own dream Dawn of X comics, real or imagined, in the comments below! This is just going to be a creativity free-for-all.

I don’t review very many video games on this blog because I don’t consider myself a video game reviewer at all. I’m a pretty bad comic book and movie reviewer, why would I subject anyone to my thoughts on video games? I usually either like them or don’t. I also usually take forever to play a game. I’m not about to cram through an entire video game in a weekend to get my review up on time. That’s not this kind of blog.
But The Last of Us Part 2 is such a self-contained game that I’ve decided to share my thoughts with the world now that I’ve finished — roughly two and a half weeks after it came out.
Video game rating: 10/10 – Fantastic!
The Last of Us Part 2 is the subject of a lot of controversy on the internet, because deep down, the internet sucks and brings out the worst in people. This game also deals with a lot of sensitive topics, and people have thoughts on those. Some people also just don’t like the game and want to talk about that. So it’s really only to benefit me that I feel the need to share my thoughts with the world. What’s one more voice among the masses?
I don’t know. All I know is that I played a video game and loved every second of it. Join me after the jump for my thoughts. Expect FULL SPOILERS for both The Last of Us Part 2 and the first game.

Harley Quinn is the best DC animated series since Justice League Unlimited. That’s not hyperbole. I know people enjoy the deep bench of Young Justice, and I’m sure those non-BTAS cartoons have their fans, but none of them are the complete masterpiece that is Harley Quinn.
TV Rating: 10/10 – Fantastic!
I have loved this show from the first minutes of the first episode. Harley Quinn burst to life with sharp humor, hilarious violence and a chef’s kiss perfect use of raunch. I loved Season 1, and Season 2 is just as good, if not better. Even though the two seasons were written and produced back-to-back, Season 2 shows a clear confidence that raises this cartoon to new heights. This is a show unafraid to mess with the status quo, while also displaying a deep and loving adoration for all of DC canon.
It’s also a show that knows exactly the story it wants to tell and uses its time, its pacing and its writing to tell that story masterfully. Join me after the jump for my thoughts on the second season of Harley Quinn! Expect FULL SPOILERS for the entire show.
