Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/31/16
Here we are at last, on the final day of 2016. This accursed year has done much to destroy the human spirit and crush all our hopes and dreams. But I say that dreams never die! I plan on making 2017 the best year ever! And we can start with a nice, big pile of comic book reviews to end out the year.
We’ve got so many comic reviews, too! I had some extra time on my hands this week, so I read and have reviewed a ton of books! We’ve got great comics, like Infamous Iron Man and the new Hulk! We’ve got middling books, like Ghost Rider and Prowler! And we’ve got not quite good books, like Teen Titans!
But Comic Book of the Week goes to a stellar Spider-Woman, as writer Dennis Hopeless shows everyone the pure awesomeness of carefully constructed and executed character drama!

This day, we punch!
The final issue of Civil War II also came out this week, and just as we all feared, it was a bunch of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Captain Marvel and Iron Man duke it out and nothing really comes of it. Tony is taken off the table, Ulysses literally just disappears, solving that crisis, and pretty much every comic has already moved on to their new ongoing storylines anyway. So yeah, this thing was a big stinker.
Comic Reviews: Batgirl #6, Detective Comics #947, Ghost Rider #2, Great Lakes Avengers #3, Hulk #1, Infamous Iron Man #3, Mighty Thor #14, Prowler #3, Spider-Woman #14 and Teen Titans #3.
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/24/16
This was a banner week for comics. I grabbed a whole pile, read a whole bunch, and largely enjoyed myself. Comics are a fun medium, with lots of good stories, great characters all manner of adventure. And this week was especially good, with new issues of All-New Wolverine, Luke Cage & Iron Fist, Patsy Walker and even Mighty Thor; talk about a handful of favorites!
But Comic Book of the Week has to go to the new issue of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers from BOOM! Studios! This comic is tapping into every single one of my nostalgic veins, and I can’t stand it sometimes.
‘Member Megazord? ‘Member Green Ranger? I ‘member Green Ranger! ‘Member Dragonzord? Yeah!
I also picked up the latest issue of Civil War II, but this series is just a mess. There’s no real character depth, no real rivalry or focus. This is possibly the flimsiest Big Event I’ve read in a good long while. It’s all just nonsense, and I’m glad I dropped it quick.
The Night of the Monster Men event running through the Batman comics is shaping up to be pretty cool, though. I didn’t bother reviewing the issues, but they’re fun nonetheless.
Comic Reviews: All-New Wolverine #12, Astonishing Ant-Man #12, Harley Quinn #4, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #7, Mighty Thor #11, Patsy Walker a.k.a. Hellcat #10 and Power Man & Iron Fist #8.

Comics. We all love them. We all read them. I, for one, like to write them as well. And sure enough, I’m back with another pile of quality comics for this week’s reviews. A bunch of my favorites found their way into my pile this week, and I actually had a tough time choosing the best!
But Power Man and Iron Fist #7 easily wins Comic Book of the Week. I absolutely love the world and the characters that writer David Walker is creating. It all feels so real, and so personal for Luke Cage and Danny Rand. I hope they were this good back in the 70s. And I hope their upcoming TV shows are just as good!
Though this week is not without it’s stinkers. Hold on to your utility belts, everybody, because I’m pretty sure I’m probably done with Tom King’s Batman.
Comic Reviews: All-New Wolverine #11, Batman #5, Mighty Thor #10, Nightwing #3, Power Man and Iron Fist #7 and Spider-Woman #10.
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/30/16
I was looking over my pile of comics this week to pick out what to review, and I was struck by a really cool realization: most of the comics in my pile star women! There was once a time, not too long ago, when female-led comics were few and far between. Oh how far we’ve come. So in honor of the first ever female major party candidate for U.S. President, this Hench-Sized Comic Book Review pile is dedicated to awesome superhero ladies!
We’ve got your Batgirl, your Harley Quinn, your Pink Power Ranger, your Wonder Woman, your Squirrel Girl, your Ms. Marvel; just a cavalcade of awesome female superheroes! And each and every issue is a blast! I feel almost guilty for all the good grades I’ve given everybody.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Batgirl #1, though it’s a hard choice to make. Most of the comics are mid-storyline, whereas the new Batgirl Rebirth relaunch nails the beginning and promises a nice new series.
As for some of my other regular titles, Detective Comics is great, with more Tim Drake awesomeness. The first issue of Nightwing Rebirth is solid, but leans too heavily on some dumb new antagonist. And the new issue of Civil War II is a solid reminder about why I should stop caring. I also read the new Captain Marvel, but it was kind of lame, so it didn’t make the cut for my all-women week.
Comic Reviews: Batgirl #1, Harley Quinn #30, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers – Pink #2, Mighty Thor #9, Ms. Marvel #9, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #10 and Wonder Woman #3.

How did I get so lucky that all of my favorite comics come out in the same week? As a comic book fan, that’s great! As a comic book reviewer who is having a pretty busy week at work, that stinks! I managed to read a few of my favorites for sure this week, but I’ll be missing out reviews for the likes of Doctor Strange and Totally Awesome Hulk! I’ve also already blown my promise to try out some of the Rebirth titles, since I didn’t get around to reading Aquaman or Wonder Woman.
Guess I’ll just have to make due with the likes of Harley Quinn, Mighty Thor, Ms. Marvel, Power Rangers, and instant Comic Book of the Week, Power Man and Iron Fist! I should be so lucky as to have comics this good all in one week!
I’m sure Aquaman and Wonder Woman were fine too.
Comic Reviews: Detective Comics #935, Harley Quinn #29, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #4, Mighty Thor #8, Ms. Marvel #8 and Power Man and Iron Fist #5.
