The Incredibles 2 Has Another Surprise Villain

I liked The Incredibles 2 well enough. It’s a fun and exciting movie, about as fun and exciting as we could have hoped. The characters are fun and the action is exciting. But it definitely feels like a movie whipped up 15 years after the fact. Writer/director Brad Bird never made a sequel to The Incredibles because he’d told the story he set out to tell. Now, 15 years and one failed Tomorrowland later, Bird has apparently relented and trotted out a new adventure.

And like almost every single Pixar or Disney movie in the past five or so years, it has a surprise villain. What the heck is going on with this trend?

ScreenSlaver 01

Surprise!

Recent readers of this blog might recall the List of Six I wrote only last month that blew the lid off this trend! Since then, my film theory has gained zero traction across the rest of the Internet, so I guess it’s still up to just me to keep harping on this.

It’s weird, right? Am I alone in thinking its weird that nearly every single recent Disney and Pixar movie has a surprise villain?

That’s where the villain’s identity is kept a secret through most of the film, until one of the friendly supporting characters is suddenly revealed to have been secretly evil this whole time.

I won’t reveal the secret identity of the villain — the very anachronistic Screenslaver — because the movie is still too new. I’ve probably said too much in revealing that the villain’s identity is a surprise twist. But somebody has to stand up to this weird storytelling trope at Disney! Somebody has to stand up for the Syndromes of the world, who are villains right from the get go, and are therefore allowed to have character development across the entire film, not just crammed into the very end!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/16/18

Welcome to Unintentional Gail Simone Week! She’s got two comics out on my reading list this week, Domino and Plastic Man, and I enjoyed them both! Simone is firing on all cylinders these days.

Elsewhere this week, we’ve got new Squirrel Girl, Mister Miracle and Man of Steel, all of which were at least pretty good! Comic Book of the Week goes to the first issue of Jason Aaron’s next Thor chapter, which is a stellar debut.

Thor Intro 02

Thor like smoldering thunder…

Though it had some stiff competition from a hilarious Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, if I’m being totally honest.

Comic Reviews: Domino #3, Man of Steel #3, Mister Miracle #9, Plastic Man #1, Thor #1 and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #33.

Time to Go Watch The Incredibles 2!

The day has finally come, some 14ish years in the making! I’ll be heading to see The Incredibles 2 after work! Can’t wait for this hugely anticipated sequel! Honestly, I hope it’s great!

I still remember seeing the original Incredibles in theaters. Great film! One of Pixar’s best, but you already knew that. I mostly just wanted to celebrate The Incredibles 2 on this nice Friday, and Honest Trailers is always good for a post!

Wonderful News! Unstoppable Wasp is Coming Back!

We live in a dark world of comic book cancellations and abandonment. Many a wonderful little series has met the chopping block, cutting them short before they had a chance to thrive. Rare is the instance where we get nice things…but here we are! The Unstoppable Wasp, by writer Jeremy Whitley, is coming back!

Wasp Designs 02

Gone too soon, now back just in time!

From the sound of it, Whitley is picking up right where he left off with Nadia van Dyne and the Agents of G.I.R.L.!

How cool is this?! I loved Unstoppable Wasp! It was adorable, adorkable, very friendly and colorful, and Nadia is a really fun and charming lead character. I haven’t read much else with her in it, but Whitley’s Nadia is such a heartfelt character. She wasn’t just your average superhero. She was a bit off-kilter, but 100% heroic and confident. It was painful to lose this comic the first time.

Gonna have to refresh my memory on all these characters

But The Unstoppable Wasp is coming back in October! Art will be by Gurihiru, who I am not familiar with, but all this preview art looks pretty awesome, and perfect for the series. In the meantime, I’ll have to grab those Unstoppable Wasp tpbs on my Amazon wishlist and remind myself where things left off.

(Also, after I’d written up this article and prepared it to post, Marvel also announced that Sina Grace’s Iceman comic was coming back, too! That’s another comic I loved that was cancelled too soon! But I’m too lazy to rewrite this entire post to include both comics, so I’m just adding this addendum. No disrespect for Sina Grace or Iceman.)

6 Obscure Superhero Kids Taking Over the Family Business

The Incredibles 2 comes out this weekend and I am very, very excited! The first movie is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies and the sequel is long in coming. Me being the pop culture friendly blogger I am, I knew I needed to make a list that would coincide with the movie. How about famous comic book families? Just like the Incredibles!

Yeah, nah, that list would be comprised of the Fantastic Four and all the other famous comic book families that everybody already knows.

Incredibles Kids List 01

Not enough super teams having matching uniforms

I could make a list full of characters and superhero families that everybody already knows, but where is the fun in that? I want some deeper cuts! Then Marvel announced the new Asgardians of the Galaxy comic, which features a character I barely knew about, but is a son taking up his father’s legacy. Boom! There’s my idea! Dash and Violet in The Incredibles are picking up their parents’ superhero legacy, so how about a list of comic book characters who also take up their parents’ superhero legacy? And lets have even more fun by adding the wrinkle of making them smaller, more obscure characters!

Any website in the world will tell you all about how the Flash’s kids also became super speedsters, or about Peter Parker’s various spider-kids. But here, I’m going to tell you all about the minor, forgotten legacy characters who nonetheless exist and are pretty awesome in their own right!

This list probably isn’t going to light up any search engines, but it’s my blog and I want to have dorky comic book fun! Join me after the jump!
