6 Forgotten LGBTQ+ Superheroes Who Still Have Potential

Happy Pride Month, everyone! I am a big supporter of LGBTQ+ fiction and wanted to make sure I did at least one List of Six this month to honor Pride. I’ve done my favorite queer couples in comics. I’ve done LGBTQ+ characters who should get their own movies. And this week, we’re going to explore queer comic book characters who have sadly disappeared into comic book limbo!

Shameless plug!

It happens to a lot of good comic book characters. Not everybody is going to be a Wolverine or a Batman right out of the gate. A writer comes along and creates a cool new superhero, but they don’t catch on and fade into obscurity when the writer moves along. It happens. Over the past decade or two, we’ve seen the major comic book companies try to introduce more LGBTQ+ characters…and then they fade away as well! That’s just how comics work sometimes.

So I’m here to pick some of these characters out of limbo, dust them off and present them as superheroese with potential going forward!

My 6 Favorite Time Travelers

Happy Bill & Ted Week! Actually, it was really only Bill & Ted Day on Tuesday (June 9…6/9…excellent!), what with that new movie trailer and everything. But I felt that was a good excuse to celebrate time travelers! There are so many time travelers in fiction, and I like a bunch of them!

Just a couple of cool dudes hanging out with their cool car

Obviously, this list is going to be time traveler specific. I’m not just talking about any character who has traveled through time. The movie Avengers have done that, and the comic Avengers have done it countless times. Nope, I’m talking about characters whose thing is traveling through time, or at least it’s a major part of their whole deal. I’m fun like that!

Join me after the jump for my favorite time travelers. And feel free to share your own favorites in the comments.

6 Characters That Need Funko Pops (So I Can Buy Them)

The only Funko Pop character I own is the Green Power Ranger. I am a man who loves collecting pop culture memorabilia of my favorite characters…but for some reason, Funko Pop just doesn’t make my favorite characters. I’ll be the first to admit that I love a lot of obscure pop culture characters. But considering the thousands of Funkos in the world, have they really missed the exact characters I would buy and own?

So many options!

On my classic list of my all-time favorite comic book characters, only two of the six have Funkos — and they’re both Robin. More than half of the characters I added to the Honorable Mentions at that list do not have Funkos. Some of my favorite video game characters don’t have Funkos. It boggles my mind how few of my personal fan favorite characters have not been added to the master list of these fun little toys!

So let’s remedy that by making my personal suggestion of six characters that Funko needs to make — if they want to make me happy.

6 Characters Who Don’t Need Origin Stories

Last week, the big announcement came down that filmmaker George Miller is going to make a Mad Max prequel starring Furiosa, telling her origin story. I think this is a bad idea. Furioda arrived in Fury Road fully formed and had a very compelling, very well-done story arc over the course of that movie. Furiosa doesn’t need an origin story.

A lot of different characters don’t need origin stories.

Origin Story List 01

Deserves a sequel, not a prequel!

What’s the Furiosa origin story going to be? She’s kidnapped from her home and is forced through very ugly circumstances until she reaches the point that she’s a hardened nerve of a human being? Are we going to see the harrowing scene where she loses an arm? Surely Immortan Joe did terrible things to her. Do we really want to watch that? Especially since Charlize Theron won’t be returning. She got to introduce one of the greatest female protagonists in the history of Hollywood, but to follow up, they’re going to recast the part and show us all her ugly, abusive moments? Why not a badass sequel?

Furiosa would have topped this list prior to last week. But since we’re doomed to that prequel, here are six other characters who do not need origin stories.

6 Cartoon Couples Allowed to be Queer at the Very End

So this is a thing. And it’s surprised me that I’ve been able to find six examples to make this list. But the series finale of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power provided the last piece of the puzzle and I finally finished this article. It’s a sign of the times. There have been multiple instances where a cartoon show’s series finale finally allows certain characters to come out of the closet and be true to their gay, lesbian and/or bisexual selves.

I think it’s great! But it’s still weird that it’s only allowed to happen in the series finale, right?

Gay at End List 01

Give us some series premiere action!

Some day, we are going to get a show where the main character and their love interest are both openly queer. Or are both somewhere on the LGBTQ+ spectrum. It’s gonna happen. Some day we’re going to get a lesbian Disney Princess. Some day, a big fancy company is going to purchase the rights to my own self-published queer comic, Gamer Girl & Vixen, and turn it into a popular, award-winning show! And no, that’s not the only reason I’m doing this list! I just wanted to shamelessly self-promote for a little bit.

Join me after the jump for the phenomenon that is LGBTQ+ cartoon couples allowed to come out and be proud at the very, very, very end of the series. SPOILERS for the end of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
