Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/8/17
Oh man oh man! Spider-Man: Homecoming! I’m writing this opening paragraph before seeing Spider-Man: Homecoming and I don’t have time to update it with my thoughts on the film. I’m hoping I liked the movie! And I hope you henchies like it too!
Kind of a light week on comics this week, but it’s giving me time to catch up on some titles where I fell behind. So check out new reviews for Iron Fist and Unstoppable Wasp! The latter of which wins Comic Book of the Week for a really nice issue focusing on the original Wasp, Janet Van Dyne!
I think this is the most I’ve ever cared about Janet Van Dyne. Not to say she’s not a great character, she’s just never been one of my beloved characters. But this issue does a great job with her and Nadia!
Comic Reviews: Batman #26, Harley Quinn #23, Hawkeye #8, Iron Fist #5 and Unstoppable Wasp #7.
My 6 Favorite Spider-Man Costumes
It’s Spider-Man movie week! Spider-Man: Homecoming is finally here, and all early reviews peg this thing as amazing! Spectacular, even! I’ll be seeing the film with my usual chaps this weekend and can’t wait. To eat up some of the week and revel in some Spidey goodness, how about a List of my favorite Spider-Man costumes?
I’ve already done lists of my favorite Spidey villains and my hopes for future Spidey movies. But what about costumes? Spider-Man might just be the superhero with the most alternate costumes out there. His original look is just so damn iconic, so perfect, that people can’t help but try out their own designs. It’s great fun, and here’s my rundown of my favorites!
And feel free to share your favorite Spider-Man costumes in the comments below!
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/1/17
Happy Fourth of July weekend, everybody! We’ve got a bunch of good comics this week, and I’ve got a day off from work on Tuesday, so I’m in all manner of good spirits. We’ve got some quality Spider-Man and Batman comics this week, which is always a hoot. And Comic Book of the Week goes to another stellar Infamous Iron Man. I’m just loving that comic!
I skipped a double dose of Young Jean Grey this week. Her solo series was just a team-up with Prince Namor, who I don’t care for. And X-Men Blue was pretty interesting, but I swear to God, if Cullen Bunn brought Jimmy Hudson into that book just to revive the Cyclops/Jean Grey/Wolverine love triangle then I am done with that comic. Full stop.
Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #29, Batgirl #12, Defenders #2, Detective Comics #959, and Infamous Iron Man #9.
6 Coolest Pop Culture Tree People (Not Named Groot)
The best laid plans of mice and men…I had the idea for this List of Six about a year ago. I knew that the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel was coming, and I thought this would make a neat list to post the week that movie came out. It would have been neat synergy! But then something happened to my brain and I forgot all about it. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came and went (and was spectacular).
Everybody loves Groot. He’s fantastic. He’s one of the only Guardians characters I actually like in the comics. Heck, I liked him before he was cool, back when the modern Guardians got their true start in the pages of Annihilation: Conquest. Groot is the best tree.
But he’s not the only tree! Join me after the jump for the six coolest tree people other than Groot!

Woo boy, do we have a wallop of a column today. As I’ve whined about in the past, all of my favorite comics tend to have the habit of coming out in the same week. Or maybe I’m just reading too many comics. Whatever the case may be, I went all out and have reviewed nearly a dozen comics this week!
We’ve got Power Rangers, we’ve got a new Spider-Man comic, we’ve got Luke Cage and Iceman, and I tried to throw in more DC comics, like Batman, Harley Quinn and hopefully the start of my Aquaman coverage. Thankfully, there were some real gems this week.
But the standout, as has been said numerous times, is the new issue of Silver Surfer. This consistent Comic Book of the Week is going to break my damn heart.
I almost jumped back into reviewing The Mighty Thor now that the Shi’ar story arc is over, but this week was a standalone issue to introduce The War Thor…which, I guess, is similar to The War Doctor? It was a fine issue, and I suppose this new concept could be fun, but there were just way too many comics on my review pile already.
Comic Reviews: Aquaman #25, Batman #25, Batwoman #4, Iceman #2, Luke Cage #2, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #16, Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1, Silver Surfer #12 and The Wild Storm #5.
