Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/5/21
What a week. What a week. What a week. For me, it was mostly marked by being dead tired. Up here in my neck of the woods, the heat has changed and I’m having trouble sleeping. So…ugh. Tired. But at least we had comics to read, like Batman and Crush & Lobo, which I decided to try out for Pride Month!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Marauders #21 for a nice introduction to the Hellfire Gala. It isn’t the highest rated single issue this week, but it had some really fun moments, kicked off a major event I’m very excited about, and it brought Rhapsody back to comics. That’s all win win for me!
Meanwhile, Heroes Reborn continues to be a ton of fun! It’s still this glorious Amalgam throwback and I am here for it. I also wrapped up Mare of Easttown on HBO and it was a really good detective/mystery show. Kept me guessing and it features a lot of great characters and character work. Definitely recommended.
Comic Reviews: Batman #109, Crush & Lobo #1, Marauders #21, Hellions #12 and X-Force #20.

The schadenfreude of DC’s failed cinematic universe will never not be funny. They tried, they took some big swings, they drummed up a lot of controversy, but in the end their epics plans fell flat on their face. Honestly, it’s just really funny.
Isn’t that right, Honest Trailers?
And so good times were had by all. A good chuckle to start our Tuesday. I’m still not entirely convinced that Flash movie is actually going to happen and come out. I think they’re even filming it now. And I do still rather like Aquaman and Shazam. So at least there’s that.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/29/21
Oh what a week for comics, my friends! I guess. Some pretty good stuff this week, but not as good as last week, I’m afraid. We’ve got solid work from Detective Comics and Robin, at least. I’m just not really feeling it this week. I’ve been really tired lately. But don’t worry about me! I splurged on some new LEGO to make me happy.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Beta Ray Bill #3, making another solid push to become the best comic of the year already! Just look at what we get in this issue!
Meanwhile, I’ve dropped the Harley Quinn comic because I just wasn’t feeling it this week. And another issue of Strange Adventure came out. It was OK…but I think this whole series has just been one long, slow attempt by Tom King to ruin everything that might have ever been good or fun about Adam Strange. If you thought you liked Adam Strange, wait until you find out how he’s a liar and a war criminal! The series.
Comic Reviews: Beta Ray Bill #3, Detective Comics #1036, Robin #2 and X-Men #20.

I’ve noticed a worrying trend in my reviews lately. I think I’ve started just recapping interesting parts of the issue and then nitpicking the little things to death. That’s no way to read and review comics! So starting this week, I’m going to try to be more substantive in why I like or dislike an issue. I should really dig into these things, such as new issues of Green Lantern and Strange Academy, and the final issue of The Union!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Batman #108 as it solidifies itself as my favorite of the two ongoing Batman comics. This issue really grabbed me as it explained in great detail the point of the Unsanity Collective.
Meanwhile, I read and enjoyed the first issue of Heroes Reborn, the new Big Event from Marvel. As usual, I’m not going to do a full review because I just don’t think these Big Events are worth it anymore. But I like Jason Aaron, I want to see more of Murder Hornet and this could be interesting. The first issue is all set-up, and it’s solid, enjoyable set-up. I’ll definitely be reading more as the event goes on.
Comic Reviews: Batman #108, Green Lantern #2, Marauders #20, Strange Academy #10 and The Union #5.

I think I have a money spending problem. I just splurged on the New Pokemon Snap and I’ll be playing it this weekend. At least I’m putting my new Nintendo Switch to good use! And there’s always new comics to buy, like the first issue of the new Robin solo series!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Beta Ray Bill #2. Not only does this series star the greatest comic book character of all time, but it seems to know exactly what to do with him and how to tell this story.
Meanwhile, I’ve finally started watching Doom Patrol and I am loving this show! I’m only a few episodes in and it’s already brilliant. I’ve only ever heard good things, and I’m glad I never gave up on this show. I’ve simply never cared that much about the Doom Patrol in the comics, but their show is phenomenal so far! Highly recommended.
Comic Reviews: Beta Ray Bill #2, Detective Comics #1035, Harley Quinn #2, and Robin #1.
