Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/25/22

You know what happens when you don’t read comics you don’t like? You get a week like this one, where everything I read was a banger! Amazing Spider-Man finally stepped up to reveal the cleverness I knew was there, and any week with Nightwing is a good week.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Immortal X-Men #3 for a touching and suspenseful focus on Destiny, the character and the concept.

Not especially

Meanwhile, I continue to explore everything AppleTV+ has to offer. I’m enjoying Dickinson, and Foundation turned out to be pretty OK in the long run. I finished up Sniper Elite 5, which was great, and I plan to spend this weekend rocking some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge!

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #4, Immortal X-Men #3, Nightwing #93 and X-Men #12.

Very interesting week in comics for me. Not a big week, but some issues that show very stark differences in what I like to see in a new comic vs. what I don’t like to see. I think there is a world of difference between how Marvel is presenting the new Amazing Spider-Man vs. how DC is presenting the new Wonder Girl.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Inferno #2 for a whole heck of a lot of really good character work starring all our favorite X-Men.

Go ahead and let bad guys join

Meanwhile, I’m finally watching season 5 of The Expanse and it is wonderful. I love this show so much! And season 6 is right around the corner! And I’m still playing Back 4 Blood and having a blast killing zombies and leveling up. Things are good. Today I’m heading out to go see The French Dispatch in a theater about an hour away. I hope it’s worth the extra drive.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #77, Inferno #2, S.W.O.R.D. #9 and Wonder Girl #4.

Oh what a week for comics, my friends! I guess. Some pretty good stuff this week, but not as good as last week, I’m afraid. We’ve got solid work from Detective Comics and Robin, at least. I’m just not really feeling it this week. I’ve been really tired lately. But don’t worry about me! I splurged on some new LEGO to make me happy.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Beta Ray Bill #3, making another solid push to become the best comic of the year already! Just look at what we get in this issue!

This is everything I want from comic books

Meanwhile, I’ve dropped the Harley Quinn comic because I just wasn’t feeling it this week. And another issue of Strange Adventure came out. It was OK…but I think this whole series has just been one long, slow attempt by Tom King to ruin everything that might have ever been good or fun about Adam Strange. If you thought you liked Adam Strange, wait until you find out how he’s a liar and a war criminal! The series.

Comic Reviews: Beta Ray Bill #3, Detective Comics #1036, Robin #2 and X-Men #20.

I have an addiction to ordering graphic novels on Amazon. Admitting I have a problem is the first step. But in better news, I finally have my hands on Spider-Man: Life Story! I’ll let you know what I think!

Comic Book of the Week goes to Thor #3, because nothing tickles my pinks quite like an awesome guest appearance from Beta Ray Bill!

Thor v Bill 01

Everybody in new outfits!

Meanwhile, I didn’t like the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. I suppose one argument could be made that I should cut an obvious kids’ movie some slack, but we’ve all seen good kids movies. This is just a dumb film filled with cliches and tropes. And they don’t really get Sonic right. He’s all about attitude, but movie Sonic is a hopeful, lonely kid who just wants a friend. And as the tropes dictate, he gets at least one.

Comic Reviews: Go Go Power Rangers #29, The Green Lantern #1, Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey #1, Iron Man 2020 #2, Thor #3 and X-Men #6.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/23/15

Happy Memorial Day weekend, my fellow Americans! And happy weekend to readers from countries that don’t celebrate Memorial Day this weekend! Whatever the case may be, this is definitely the kick off to summer…at least in those countries that are experiencing summer right now! At the very least, we’re all getting new comics.

With DC Comics buried in Convergence, and Marvel Comics starting to dive into Secret Wars, my pull list is getting pretty small. Fortunately, it gives me more time to focus on publishers other than the Big Two! We’ve got new issues of Bloodshot Reborn and Ninjak from Valiant Comics, and Oni Press’ Kaijumax wins Comic Book of the Week for being delightfully weird.

Took a wrong turn at Tokyo

Being the Marvel fan that I am, I’m not ignoring Secret Wars as completely as I’m ignoring Convergence. So you can check out my review of A-Force #1 over at Word of the Nerd. It’s a solid comic, but it reeks of being just a gimmick. If that creative team was allowed to create a real A-Force in the real Marvel Universe, it would be a hell of a comic!

And if you haven’t yet, you can pre-order Gamer Girl & Vixen on our Kickstarter page! And if any of you readers are fellow reviewers and are willing to give Gamer Girl & Vixen a look see, let me know in the comments!

Comic Reviews: Bloodshot Reborn #2, Kaijumax #2, Ninjak #3, Star Wars #5 and Uncanny X-Men #34.
