Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/28/19
Happy End of 2019 everybody! Christmas is over, the New Year is right around the corner, and I have absolutely no comics to review this week! Almost! All the major comic companies dropped all of their books last week, leaving only a handful released this past week — due to the Christmas holiday.
So Comic Book of the Week goes to Incoming #1 because it was the only comic I brought and read this week! It’s the kick-off comic for Marvel’s next big event and the new year’s stories. It’s fine.
Meanwhile, I did not read the first issues of Doctor Strange and Spider-Ham. I probably could have, but I’m not particularly interested. And sometimes I’d like to save some money, especially after the giant pile of reviews last week! So somebody else can let me know if those comics were any good.
Comic Reviews: Incoming #1.
Let’s Get Weird With It With Tenet
I’m home from another lovely Christmas holiday with my family! But I don’t have much to share. In comic book news, I got the first compendium of Saga! That thing is a beast! My family is great!
So let’s just ease back into blogging with the trailer for Tenet, the next weird movie from Christopher Nolan!
I’m not sure what to make of all of this, other than it looks pretty cool! Weird and cool are Christopher Nolan’s cup of tea, and I’m sure we’ll all have a really good time. Somebody remind me to rewatch his Dark Knight trilogy one of these days.
Tenet comes out on July 17.

6 Thoughts on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Here we are at the end of the Skywalker Saga of Star Wars movies and I’m glad it’s over. No more waiting, no more anticipating. Now Star Wars is free to tell new stories with now protagonists and new adventures! But before we get to all of that, let’s take just a moment and think over Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Movie Rating: 7/10 – Good.
I went into this movie ready to be cynical. I’d read a bunch of reviews, seen all the headlines and prepared myself for something aggressively fan-servicey. I was perfectly happy with The Last Jedi, aside from a few nitpicks, and I found it laughably funny when I heard how drastically Rise of Skywalker attempted to “course correct” to appease the haters. How disappointing.
But it turns out, I’m a sucker for good Star Wars fan service! I loved almost all of the twists and surprises and came out of the movie feeling excited and entertained. A couple of the fan service things made me roll my eyes, but I’m pleased with the overall film. It was all perfectly fine.

My 10 Favorite Comics of the 2010s
Another decade has come and gone and we are all, therefore, another decade older. I know I’m feeling it! Let us distract ourselves from such mortal concerns by reflecting on my favorite comic books from the past 10 years!
My memory isn’t all that great, but I’ve looked back over my various comic reviews and favorites lists and I think I’ve narrowed down a good list of 10 comics that I very much enjoyed. This blog started in 2011, so I’ve definitely been talking about a lot of comics over the past 10 years. It was a pretty monumental decade! We had the New 52 from DC Comics and the influence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at Marvel Comics.
This was also the decade where I finally started writing my own comics! Gamer Girl & Vixen has been doing pretty well, and volume 2 is in production!
Join me after the jump as I take a look back at my favorite comics from the past decade! They are not in any particular order.
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/21/19
Holy moly, people! Because Christmas falls on a Wednesday next week, every single comic company is dumping ALL OF THEIR COMICS this week! We’ve got nearly half a dozen Dawn of X comics, along with the likes of Powers Rangers, Runaways, Legion of Super-Heroes and, to top it all off, the finale to Tom King’s Batman saga and the mid-season finale to Dan Slott’s Iron Man! There’s so many comics!
Comic Book of the Week goes to the final issue of King Thor! Jason Aaron finishes his legendary run with a truly masterful goodbye that’s both exciting and heartfelt. And Thor: God Cop.
Meanwhile, in non-comic book but otherwise important news, I enjoyed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. I’ll have my full review and thoughts on Wednesday, but for right now, I liked the movie. Or more precisely, I liked the grand finale with all its crazy big action and solid character moments. It seems I’m a sucker for good, quality Star Wars fan service.
