6 Characters Who Don’t Need Origin Stories

Last week, the big announcement came down that filmmaker George Miller is going to make a Mad Max prequel starring Furiosa, telling her origin story. I think this is a bad idea. Furioda arrived in Fury Road fully formed and had a very compelling, very well-done story arc over the course of that movie. Furiosa doesn’t need an origin story.

A lot of different characters don’t need origin stories.

Origin Story List 01

Deserves a sequel, not a prequel!

What’s the Furiosa origin story going to be? She’s kidnapped from her home and is forced through very ugly circumstances until she reaches the point that she’s a hardened nerve of a human being? Are we going to see the harrowing scene where she loses an arm? Surely Immortan Joe did terrible things to her. Do we really want to watch that? Especially since Charlize Theron won’t be returning. She got to introduce one of the greatest female protagonists in the history of Hollywood, but to follow up, they’re going to recast the part and show us all her ugly, abusive moments? Why not a badass sequel?

Furiosa would have topped this list prior to last week. But since we’re doomed to that prequel, here are six other characters who do not need origin stories.

There’s Going to be a New LEGO Helicarrier for Me to Purchase!

I have been fairly good this quarantine in that I haven’t splurged on a bunch of expensive LEGO just to pass the time. I did buy a couple of sets, but I waited at least a month! Well it looks like the horizon has plenty in store for an old sap like me.

There’s going to be a new, smaller LEGO Avengers helicarrier!

LEGO Helicarrier New 01

Why yes, that is a mini, buildable MODOK!

It looks a little awkward, having to shrink down to a more manageable size. But it still looks like a beauty worthy of building.

The set isn’t available yet, but you can set a bookmark and check out some more pictures on its LEGO webpage. The $119 price tag isn’t too bad. Between this set and the upcoming Razor Crest from The Mandalorian, I’m going to be down about $250 in the near future.

More excitedly, this new helicarrier is far more manageable than the previous LEGO helicarrier, which was a monstrous beast for $350. I never did splurge on that one.

I Got Blurbed Again; This Time on Iceman!

I’ve been reviewing comic books on this dinky little blog for many, many years now. And while this has not yet catapulted me to fame and fortune in the industry, it is nice to occasionally be acknowledged.

Like how my thoughts on Sina Grace’s Iceman comic made it onto the cover the last tpb volume!

Iceman Cover Blurb

I never know when this happens. It always comes down to me just buying comics that I like and finding out that I’m on the cover that way. It happened with Spider-Woman and Power Man and Iron Fist. And now Iceman! The comic was great, I now own all three volumes and I am tickled pink that they used one of my reviews to blurb on the cover.

Now I just need to meet Sina Grace and hope he isn’t too bitter about his treatment from Marvel to sign my copy…

Also, yes, that’s totally a Gamer Girl & Vixen bookmark! I still have some leftover if anybody wants one.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/23/20

Comics are still working their way back into our lives, with bigger and fancier release dates promised in a couple months. For now, I’m making due with what comes out that I actually want to read. This week, none of my usual comics came out. And I didn’t feel like catching up on all five issues of Hawkeye: Freefall.

So I checked out the second issue of Lost on Planet Earth from Comixology Originals! And I didn’t care for it. It’s got all the makings of a good comic, but the execution is failing me.

Lost Planet Earth 04

Awk-ward!

Meanwhile, what else am I doing? I finished a reread of Batgirl of Burnside after buying up all the tpbs. It’s still good, and I’m enjoying her arrival in the Harley Quinn cartoon (which is amazing!). She-Ra and the Princesses of Power delivered an awesome finale. Solar Opposites was pretty good. And I didn’t care for Scoob! And that’s my quarantine life!

So They’re Going to Release the Snyder Cut

I don’t care about the Snyder Cut of the Justice League movie. I can remember mildly enjoying all of Zack Snyder’s DC Comics movies in the theaters, but time has curdled that opinion and I don’t care for Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice or Justice League. So if we’re drawing lines in the sand, I am definitely not one of those fanboys who was desperate for Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of Justice League.

I thought the whole idea was as much a joke as this Honest Trailers video on the subject.

But earlier this week, Warner Bros. has announced that they will release the massive, 4-hour Snyder’s Cut of Justice League next year to attract viewers to their upcoming HBO Now streaming service. Gotta have something to offer people to get them to subscribe to yet another streaming service; and someone thought pandering to the fanboys was the right choice.

We’ll see. I’ll probably watch the Snyder Cut some how when it’s out, but I’m fairly certain it’s going to be as bad as the rest of Snyder’s DC output. Such is life.
