The New Mutants Movie is Finally Happening!

What a long, strange trip it’s been! Back when FOX Studios still owned the X-Men, they commissioned a spin-off film based on the New Mutants from the comics. FOX went ahead and actually made the film starring the classic comic characters like Cannonball and Wolfsbane, and they made it into a horror movie.

The New Mutants film was supposed to come out…either last year or the year before, but it got indefinitely delayed while Disney went about buying FOX. Everybody thought Disney would just shelve the project, or maybe quietly air it on Disney+ just to get rid of it.

But nope! A new trailer came out today with the promise that The New Mutants will be in theaters on April 3! Fancy that.

Trailer looks pretty darn cool. It succeeds in taking these mutants and putting them in a horror film, that’s for sure. Things look scary. But will it be scary? Will it be a quality film at all? Who knows! But you can be darn sure I’ll be in the theater to find out.

Perhaps now the FOX X-Men franchise can end with a good movie instead of Dark Phoenix last year.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/4/20

Happy New Year, everybody! It’s 2020, so we’ve got a whole new year of comic book fun to look forward to! The year starts off on a strong foot, with enjoyable issues of Doctor Doom, Lois Lane and the kickoff to the new Thor by Donny Cates! He does a pretty solid job starting off.

Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of X-Men for finally doing something worthy of the new status quo of Dawn of X! Also, Apocalypse is interesting for the first time ever.

Magneto Dines 01

A mutant of culture

Meanwhile, my brother got me the first Saga compendium for Christmas. It’s a pretty huge book, containing upwards of 50 issues. I’m both tempted and fearful about reading all that Saga again. Someday I’ll to give it a shot, for sure.

Comic Reviews: Doctor Doom #4, Lois Lane #7, Marauders #5, Thor #1 and X-Men #4.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/21/19

Holy moly, people! Because Christmas falls on a Wednesday next week, every single comic company is dumping ALL OF THEIR COMICS this week! We’ve got nearly half a dozen Dawn of X comics, along with the likes of Powers Rangers, Runaways, Legion of Super-Heroes and, to top it all off, the finale to Tom King’s Batman saga and the mid-season finale to Dan Slott’s Iron Man! There’s so many comics!

Comic Book of the Week goes to the final issue of King Thor! Jason Aaron finishes his legendary run with a truly masterful goodbye that’s both exciting and heartfelt. And Thor: God Cop.

Cop of Thunder 01

You know you’d read it

Meanwhile, in non-comic book but otherwise important news, I enjoyed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. I’ll have my full review and thoughts on Wednesday, but for right now, I liked the movie. Or more precisely, I liked the grand finale with all its crazy big action and solid character moments. It seems I’m a sucker for good, quality Star Wars fan service.

Comic Reviews: Batman #85, Gwenpool Strikes Back #5, King Thor #4, Legion of Superh-Heroes #2, Marauders #4, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #46, New Mutants #4, Runaways #28, Scream: Curse of Carnage #2, Spider-Man #3, and Tony Stark – Iron Man #19.

Multiple Man is on Krakoa…and is Instantly Killed!

Welp, I finally got my Madrox sighting in Dawn of X! Jamie Madrox the Multiple Man, my favorite character in all of comics, has made his first appearance as part of the big X-Men relaunch in X-Force #4.

Where he’s promptly killed. And is shown to be wearing his dumb original costume.

Madrox Killed DoX 01

Marvel just loves twisting the knife!

Thankfully, that’s just a duplicate. There’s dialogue in the rest of the issue stating that Jamie Prime is still alive. We don’t get to see him, but I’ll take what I can get. Multiple Man is back!

But seriously, what’s with the old costume? When Multiple Man was leader of X-Factor, with Peter David writing, that comic ran for 100+ issues! When was the last time an X-Men comic ran consistently with the same creator for that long? PAD made that comic work, and Multiple Man is a hugely popular character!

Why the hell would you ignore the past decade of Jamie Madrox character development by putting him back in that old costume? And why keep killing him?!

I’m just not allowed to have nice things. Though this issue also mentions Shortpack, another favorite obscure mutant of mine who didn’t make my list, but is fun to see regardless!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/14/19

Welcome to another weekend of solid, enjoyable comic book reviews! And it’s another week of my favorites! Like Wonder Twins! And the exciting new Far Sector! Plus Go Go Power Rangers! The three-issue Dawn of X cavalcade continues, but not for me…

Comic Book of the Week goes to the latest issue of Jane Foster: Valkyrie, which assembles possibly the most original superhero team in years!

Doctor Team 01

A superhero team for the ages!

Meanwhile, I’ve dropped Fallen Angels because I just don’t care anymore. I don’t care about the characters, I don’t care about the story, I don’t care about the writing or the art. It’s the first on the Dawn of X chopping block! Though it’s also going to be the first to take a break in a couple of months, with a new Hellions coming out next spring. I’ll have to check that one out!

Comic Reviews: Far Sector #2, Go Go Power Rangers #26, New Mutants #3, Valkyrie #6, Wonder Twins #10 and X-Force #3.
