Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/19/20

Merry Christmas, everybody! And Happy Hannukah! And all the other winter holidays! This time next week, Christmas will have passed! I don’t yet know if I’ll be going home for Christmas, or who all will even be there if I do. But hopefully I’ll have a good time.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Batman #105 for a solid, enjoyable conclusion to the Ghost-Maker arc. I like how it ends, which was legitimately unexpected for me.

“That this city is full of people ready to believe in good…or something like that.”

Meanwhile, I’m still enjoying Cyberpunk 2077. I don’t know if I’ll do a review/list when I’m finished. It would have far more positives than gripes. I also just started watching The Owl House on Disney+ and it’s a ton of fun so far! I’m so glad I’m finding all these new cartoons since so many of my favorites ended recently.

Speaking of Disney+, how great was that season finale of The Mandalorian?! Also, I called it! I called the ending! It’s not often I actually manage to call something.

Comic Reviews: Batman #105, The Green Lantern: Season Two #10, Iron Man #4 and Power Rangers #2.

Beta Ray Bill is Getting a New Comic!

The greatest comic book character of all time — Beta Ray Bill — is going to get a new comic mini-series in March! The comic will be written and drawn by Daniel Warren Johnson.

I love Beta Ray Bill as much as the next person, so I’m obviously excited. The story is going to be something of a tie-in to King in Black, which isn’t ideal. But such is the current focus of Marvel. And Beta Ray Bill has lost Stormbreaker. But at least the recent de-powering by Donald Blake wasn’t permanent.

Of the series, Johnson said, “Beta Ray Bill is literally my favorite Marvel character, so it’s a dream come true, and there are images in this book I’ve been wanting to illustrate for years.”

Johnson is apparently old comic pals with Donny Cates, which is one way to get such a job! I need to make more friends in the indie comics world…

Top 6 New Things I’m Excited About from Disney’s Investor Summit

Last Thursday night was a crazy night! Disney held their annual investor summit and, since there were no comic-cons this year, they basically announced EVERYTHING they had coming up for Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel. As everyone here well knows, I love all of those things! So last Thursday was like Christmas come early.

The man, the myth, the legend

I didn’t have the time or energy to write individual blog posts for every single awesome thing to come out of the summit. I shared a bunch of the trailers, which are the best part! Now this list is about some of the other bits and pieces I enjoyed! A ton of new content was announced and I want to share my favorite bits. We already knew about a lot of things, like Tatiana Maslany cast as She-Hulk and the Ms. Marvel show. We also knew the Fantastic Four movie was coming. So this list is about new things we learned at the summit, the things I am, personally, most excited about! Big and small!

So join me after the jump for some truly great upcoming geekery!

Armor Wars is Our Best Chance Ever to Get Stingray Into the MCU

Last week, Disney and Marvel announced a metric ton of new shows and characters coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’re getting Ironheart, we’re getting Secret Invasion, we’re getting She-Hulk, we’re getting America Chavez, we’re getting Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania; we’re getting so so so much content over the next few years! It’s going to be great!

Most exciting at all (debatable) is the fact that Stingray could finally make an appearance in the new TV show Armor Wars, starring Don Cheadle as War Machine.

This one

Why is this the best chance to get Stingray into the MCU? I’m so glad you asked!

Armor Wars is a classic Iron Man story from the late 1980s, wherein Tony Stark discovers that his armor technology has been stolen and integrated into several armored villains from around the Marvel Universe. So Tony launches a crusade to shut this stuff down, taking on all of these villains…and then it evolves to taking on anyone with armor. He wants to get his tech out of the hands of everybody.

And one of this suspects is, our favorite, Stingray.

This guy

So Iron Man goes after Stingray and battles his fellow Avenger. It’s hero vs. hero! But in the end, after defeating Stingray, Tony learns that Stingray’s armor is not based on Stark designs. He attacked a hero and fellow Avenger for no good reason!

It’s a bit of a turning point in the Armor Wars story…and easily something that could be a turning point in the TV show! It’s one thing to take on the likes of Stilt-Man and the Controller, but to beat up a fellow Avenger? A fellow hero? That’s a big deal! And great for TV drama.

If you’d like to learn more about what the heck I’m talking about, the Iron Man cartoon from the 1990s did an Armor Wars two-parter. And both episodes are available on YouTube! And Disney+, if you’re subscribed.

But YouTube clips are easier to share on this blog. So check out this episode. The Stingray portion begins at the 4:00 mark.

How fun is that? Such an underrated show.

Also, now that I think about it, Armor Wars is also our best chance of getting Stilt-Man into the MCU. That’s also exciting!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/12/20

Holy cow, what a week! Did you see all that Marvel and Star Wars news coming out of Disney?! An Ahsoka Tano TV show? Trailers for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Loki?! Armor Wars, Ironheart, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel footage; wowzers! It’s gonna be a fun couple of years!

And comics are good too. Some quality issues this week. Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Morphin #2 because I am a sucker for this new Green Ranger.

He definitely knows how to make an entrance

Meanwhile, I am enjoying Cyberpunk 2077. I’m playing it on a Playstation 4 Slim that I bought a couple of years ago. I keep hearing that people are having a lot of problems on the PS4, but I caught some tips and tricks early about adjusting the settings, and my game is running fine a few hours in. Perhaps it looks better on a next-gen console, but since I’ll never see that comparison directly, I’m perfectly content with how it looks now. So yeah, fun times for me.

Comic Reviews: Juggernaut #4, Marauders #15, Mighty Morphin #2, Spider-Man #5 and SWORD #1.
