Top 6 New Things I’m Excited About from Disney’s Investor Summit

Last Thursday night was a crazy night! Disney held their annual investor summit and, since there were no comic-cons this year, they basically announced EVERYTHING they had coming up for Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel. As everyone here well knows, I love all of those things! So last Thursday was like Christmas come early.

The man, the myth, the legend

I didn’t have the time or energy to write individual blog posts for every single awesome thing to come out of the summit. I shared a bunch of the trailers, which are the best part! Now this list is about some of the other bits and pieces I enjoyed! A ton of new content was announced and I want to share my favorite bits. We already knew about a lot of things, like Tatiana Maslany cast as She-Hulk and the Ms. Marvel show. We also knew the Fantastic Four movie was coming. So this list is about new things we learned at the summit, the things I am, personally, most excited about! Big and small!

So join me after the jump for some truly great upcoming geekery!

6. Rogue Squadron movie

X-Wings vs TIE Fighters is iconic

I’ve written plenty on this blog about how I loved the Rogue and Wraith Squadron novels as a kid. They were my entry point to the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and are a foundational part of my love of Star Wars in general. There’s just something so damn cool about X-Wing fighters and the dogfights they have in space. And that something cool is going to be translated to the big screen with Patty Jenkins’ upcoming Rogue Squadron movie! I know they’re not going to straight adapt the novels or the characters…but they might? In the end, I don’t care. I’m just really excited for some high octane X-Wing fighter jet adventures!

5. Fennec Shand in The Bad Batch

Behold a newly iconic helmet!

I didn’t particularly care for The Bad Batch when they showed up in the final season of Clone Wars. The episodes and characters were fine. So the announcement/confirmation of a Bad Batch cartoon in the near future wasn’t too thrilling for me — at least not until eagle-eyed viewers spotted Fennec Shand in the trailer! Played in The Mandalorian by Ming-Na Wen, Fennec is a fun new character in the Star Wars universe, and I’m thrilled that they’re already giving her more to do! Ming-Na Wen is an awesome actor, and the increased amount of Asian representation in Star Wars is fun. So I’m very excited to follow that character into a new Star Wars adventure!

4. Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Sure, why not?

I love the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, just like everybody else. So of course I’m excited for Vol. 3. But along with that movie, James Gunn is going to bring us a random holiday special too! And since Gunn is the one making it, we know it’ll be just as good as any other of his Guardians installments! So that’s more Guardians of the Galaxy than we were expecting! How can that not be exciting?

3. The Abomination returns

He’s been waiting for this

Who doesn’t love the interconnection in the MCU? I know I do, so I love the fact that Marvel is bringing back Tim Roth to play the Abomination in the new She-Hulk TV show! It’s the same feeling when they brought back General Ross for a major role following his years of absence from The Incredible Hulk. Maybe Tim Roth will be on trial and Jennifer Walters will be his defense attorney? That would be a great plot for the show! Now they just need to sneak in Tim Blake Nelson as the Leader.

2. Fantastic Four movie

Probably not a final logo

Our first official confirmation of the new Fantastic Four movie arrived at the summit, and I am pleased. It had been hinted before, plus it was probably a given, but Kevin Feige made the official announcement, showed off an initial logo and told us that Jon Watts will direct. Watts has been director on the three MCU Spider-Man films, so we know he’s great! There were no other announcements going alongside the basic idea of the movie, but I can be patient! Hopefully somebody has read my blog post on how I’d bring the F4 into the MCU. I still think it’s a solid pitch!

1. Ahsoka Tano TV show

Bring it on!

There were rumors this was coming and I’m glad we now have confirmation! Rosario Dawson is coming back as live action Ahsoka Tano and she’ll get her own TV show! And it’ll run parallel to The Mandalorian, building up to some joint big project down the line! We’re gonna live in a world where now TV shows are interconnected with each other! How exciting! I have total faith that Disney and Co. will be able to pull this off, so I’m just going to go ahead and be very excited! There’s also a Rangers of the New Republic show coming up, but until we know what that’s about, I’m not going to be as excited. If this is just a new name for a full adaptation of the Wraith Squadron books, then it will take the #1 slot on this list. But until then, I’m going to stay mostly hyped for more Ahsoka Tano on the small screen!
