Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/8/21

I’ve noticed a worrying trend in my reviews lately. I think I’ve started just recapping interesting parts of the issue and then nitpicking the little things to death. That’s no way to read and review comics! So starting this week, I’m going to try to be more substantive in why I like or dislike an issue. I should really dig into these things, such as new issues of Green Lantern and Strange Academy, and the final issue of The Union!

Comic Book of the Week goes to Batman #108 as it solidifies itself as my favorite of the two ongoing Batman comics. This issue really grabbed me as it explained in great detail the point of the Unsanity Collective.

Batman and Robin 2099

Meanwhile, I read and enjoyed the first issue of Heroes Reborn, the new Big Event from Marvel. As usual, I’m not going to do a full review because I just don’t think these Big Events are worth it anymore. But I like Jason Aaron, I want to see more of Murder Hornet and this could be interesting. The first issue is all set-up, and it’s solid, enjoyable set-up. I’ll definitely be reading more as the event goes on.

Comic Reviews: Batman #108, Green Lantern #2, Marauders #20, Strange Academy #10 and The Union #5.

Get Hyped for Them There Marvel Movies!

It being a random Monday, Marvel has released a sizzle reel trailer to show off their awesomeness and reveal some upcoming dates for new movies. Obviously this is a ploy to get us all to go back to movie theaters…and it works like a charm!

This sizzle reel also features the first footage from The Eternals, which comes out this November. We’ve also got the first logos for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Marvels, the sequels to Black Panther and Captain Marvel respectively.

So yeah, big freakin’ deal, I’d say! Trailer looks great! Marvel has never skimped on those. I’m excited for all the upcoming movies, and I’m already back in the theaters, so you best believe I’ll be seeing all of these upcoming movies on the big screen.

It’s gonna be a busy couple of months. We’ve got Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Eternals and Spider-Man: Far From Home all coming out in the back half of this year. Of 2021!

And next year, we’ve got Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Marvels!

Then, so far, we’ve got Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for 2023.

Should be a good couple of years!

I Love Everything About the Hellfire Gala!

The build-up to the Hellfire Gala on Krakoa kicked off this week with the release of a guide book, showing off everybody’s outfits and giving us a rundown of what to expect. We’ve known about this gala for a while now, and we’ve seen a lot of the outfits, and I just wanted to gush about how much I love this whole dang thing!

The X-Men hosting their own version of the Met Gala, complete with ludicrous outfits, is everything I want from X-Men comics right now.

The Dawn of X/Reign of X era has been largely hit and miss for me so far. I love the idea in general, of mutants living on Krakoa and pushing this ‘nation’ idea to its fullest. I love the good mutants and evil mutants living together in harmony. I’m perfectly happy with the resurrection stuff. I absolutely love the Crucible and all the thought behind it. I’m excited to see what Nightcrawler explores in the new Way of X series. I’m chomping at the bit for a business-focused series with X-Corp.

And I love the idea that Jumbo Carnation came back to life so that he could design insane but gorgeous gala outfits for everybody for a big crazy party! Just look at this outfits!

And even my boy Multiple Man gets an outfit! From what little we’ve glimpsed so far, it looked as if Madrox was going to be wearing his old costume to serve as waiter. But the new guidebook finally unveiled his fancy look!

Not just Multiple Man, but everybody is getting a look!

And I just want to show them off! I’m loving this whole thing, I’m loving these outfits. I only wish Marvel and their artists had time to go through and give a fancy outfit to every single freakin’ mutant that ever lived!

Where’s the Maggott design?! Give us a Maggott outfit!

But I digress. I just wanted to gush about my excitement for the Hellfire Gala and the lengths Marvel has gone to for all these beautiful outfits. And that’s to say nothing about the idea of electing the members of Krakoa’s first official team of X-Men! I love that idea as well.

Can’t wait for this whole big party to begin!

6 Thoughts on the (First?) Season of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

Six weeks of action and excitement have come and gone and I declare that the first season of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was awesome! I loved the whole darn thing, from beginning to end. A lot of chatter online has this show as flawed, but I disagree entirely. I had fun the whole way through and loved pretty much every minute of it.

TV Rating: 9/10 – Great.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was everything I wanted and more. Going into the series, I expected an action show on par with the action-heavy Marvel movies, and we got that. I expected some fun banter/butting heads between Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. We got that. Then the show took things even further with some truly memorable side characters and a deeper exploration of race than I would have ever predicted. I thought that part was great as well!

What can I say? I love me some Marvel Cinematic Universe content!

Join me after the jump for my thoughts on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier! Expect FULL SPOILERS for the show!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/24/21

What a finale to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier! I loved it, loved every part of it, from the character twists to the new costume reveals to pretty much everything! Expect a nice big review/thoughts roundup on the series on Wednesday! Until then, comics!

Comic Book of the Week goes to Way of X #1 for taking a deep dive into life on Krakoa, unlike any other X-Men comic since the new era began. I had my hesitations about this series, but the first issue delivered a lot of what I want!

Team Teleport!

Meanwhile, this week also saw the release of the new Mortal Kombat movie! I found it simultaneously cool and dumb. I’m mildly satisfied as a MK fan. And with my new Nintendo Switch, I splurged and bought Pokemon Shield. When the game was released, I was confident I would never get the chance to play. But here I am, me and my Grookey! It’s fine so far.

Also, I read this week’s issue of Spider-Woman but didn’t review it for timing reasons. But there are some fun character developments that make me want to pick this series back up again!

Comic Reviews: Justice League #60, Nightwing #79, Power Rangers #6, S.W.OR.D. #5 and Way of X #1.
