My 6 Favorite Characters from the Legion of Super-Heroes

A new Legion of Super-Heroes reboot is upon us and I’m going to give this one a try. I like Brian Michael Bendis as a writer and I love the new character designs by Ryan Sook. They’re so gorgeous and colorful! But like any comic book fan, my only real concern is where are my favorite Legionnaires?

I love the Matter-Eater-Lad redesign

I’ve never been a fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes. They’ve just never been my jam. But I have my favorite members. I had some old Legion digest comics back when I was a kid. And I had a guidebook for a tabletop RPG featuring the Legion that gave me bios for all of the various members from the 80s-90s era. All of that was enough for a couple characters to imprint on me as my favorite Legionnaires.

And sure enough, only one of my favorites has made it to the reboot so far. That’s just my luck! Join me after the jump for my favorite characters from the Legion of Super-Heroes canon!

Sure, Jayme Lawson is the New [REDACTED]

I have been trying to keep up with casting news for the new Batman movie coming out in a couple of years. I’ve liked most of it, like Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Robert Pattinson as Batman. But casting news has been coming so fast and loose that I’ve fallen way behind. We’ve got Jeffrey Wright confirmed as Commissioner Gordon. Andy Serkis as Alfred. And rumors of Colin Farrell as Penguin and Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face! It’s madness!

The newest news is actor Jayme Lawson in an unnamed role.

Jayme Lawson 01

Apparently she’s a brand new college grad and this is her first Hollywood role. That’s some pretty solid career advancement already. Good for her!

Second, what role does she have? Everybody is guessing it’s Barbara Gordon, considering we’ve now got a black Commissioner Gordon. Makes sense. It also makes sense in that the film might be really coy with Batman’s allies. It can have all the villains it wants, but Batman having allies and sidekicks makes for an entirely different movie, so they might want to keep Batgirl news secret. Of course, she could just be Barbara and not yet Batgirl.

All of this is to say we might not know Dick Grayson has been cast when he’s cast! I want Robin news!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/9/19

Last week only had a couple of reviews, whereas this week has so many comics I don’t know where to start! I have overloaded this week’s Hench-Sized Reviews with comics, and yet some of my regulars still hit the cutting room floor! There are just too many good comics out there!

This week sees the debut of a new Legion of Super-Heroes and I decided to check out the first issue of the new Image comic Undiscovered Country. Beyond that, we’ve got Batman, X-Force, New Mutants, Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom and still more! I gave Comic Book of the Week to my darling, Wonder Twins, because sometimes I can’t help myself.

With your powers combined!

Meanwhile, I finally finished off the third season of the Young Justice cartoon. It was really good, though some of my complaints from the original run still remain prevalent. I think it’s so weird that each season focuses on a new main team of heroes, though I suppose it works. I’m definitely looking forward to future seasons!

Comic Reviews: Batman #82, Doctor Doom #2, Fantastic Four #16, Green Lantern: Blackstars #1, Legion of Super-Heroes #1, Lois Lane #5, New Mutants #1, Undiscovered Country #1,  Wonder Twins #9 and X-Force #1.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/19/19

It’s gonna be a short list of reviews this week, henchies, because your buddy is on vacation! And I dunno, I didn’t feel like reading a whole stack of comics, like usual. But I did read a couple, and they were some real dingers.

Look at this list: three comics that pretty much define the entire comic book industry. Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men. No fancy adjectives. No major crossovers. Just simple comics. One is OK, one is terrible and the third, X-Men #1, is pretty darn good. I am still excited for Dawn of X! It gets Comic Book of the Week.

The state of X-Men comics at the tail end of 2019

Meanwhile, when I didn’t read the stack of newly released comics, I have been spending my time catching up on larger collections. I read the latest volume of Empowered, and it was a real barn burner! Is anybody else reading Empowered? I want to do a feature post on it someday. And I read through all of Paper Girls now that it’s complete. Really fun story. Also highly recommended.

Comic Reviews: Batman #81, Spider-Man #2 and X-Men #1.

Sure, Paul Dano is the New Riddler

Batman movie casting news keeps pouring in! Now we’ve got Paul Dano as the Riddler!

Dano Riddler 01

I like Paul Dano. He was great in one of my favorite movies, Little Miss Sunshine. I’m sure he’ll be a great Riddler. I’m really liking how this movie is shaping up. We’re supposed to get a Penguin, too, if they can land the casting. I like the idea of just having a bunch of classic villains in the movie. Break the cycle of all Batman movies needing to focus on some prestige villain showing up!
