Comic Review: Teen Titans #21
Huh? Are we still here? Is this comic really still plugging along? Weird. We just got the new solicitations from DC Comics the other day that the Teen Titans will switch into Rebirth mode in September, so it looks like we’ve got a handful more issues to trudge through before the end. Writer Tony Bedard seems like he’s going to try and make the most of the time he’s got, and I’m not going to blame him for giving it the old college try.
Comic Rating: 5/10 – Alright.
After the extremely silly last issue, where Bedard proved he has little understanding of Internet memes, we pick up this issue with a battle between the Teen Titans and the Brain and Monsieur Mallah. They’re classic Titans villains, but not in the New 52, so I think Bedard is just having some fun — and he does. With theoretically nothing to lose or waste or cost, I think Bedard just decided to write a fun Brain and Mallah story. He delves into some interesting Mallah characterization that makes me think Bedard had a couple giggles writing this one.
As an issue of Teen Titans, it’s harmless. There’s nothing more to say or do with this team. We already know what happens next, and we’ve already seen that Tim Drake alone moves on to something bigger and better. So there’s no tension in what Bedard does to the team or the characters. We get a really pointless cliffhanger at the end of this issue, and I kind of want to roll my eyes.
But Bedard and artist Miguel Mendonca make the most of a meh situation.
Justice League Logos for Everyone!
Today was apparently a big day for executive meetings I don’t get invited to attend. Justice League is the talk of the town, with the official movie logo and first synopsis revealed!
Looks fine.
And the synopsis seems pretty standard, too.
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Sounds all manner of reasonable, I’d say.
Though now we know that that the villain of the first Justice League movie will be Steppenwolf, which is…insane. But hey, maybe somebody knows what they’re doing. Maybe we don’t need Darkseid.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/18/16
I was presented with an interesting conundrum from this week’s comic books, one that strikes to the very heart of the comic book market these days. Which was the better comic this week, Batman or Patsy Walker? Batman or Patsy Walker?
I bet that’s a question I never thought I’d ask myself.
We’ve got some very fun comics this week. Astonishing Ant-Man goes full Ocean’s Eleven. Justice League tells a fun story about Robin’s first meeting with the team. And Civil War II assures us that it’s probably safe to ignore all of Marvel’s hype for this year. But the real battle comes down to an exciting, almost cinematic start for writer Tom King’s Batman run versus one of the most delightful issues of Patsy Walker a.k.a. Hellcat yet!
Though it’s probably no surprise which issue wins Comic Book of the Week from me.
Batman doesn’t have problems with locks
I just can’t help myself. Greatness is greatness. Also, that’s Jessica Jones, for those of you wondering. We can only hope they recreate this scene in Jessica Jones Season 2 on Netflix.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/11/16
Huh, what a week. After a few comic weeks full of great and wonderful comics, we’ve kind of landed on a thudder of a week. Some fine comics came out, some enjoyable, some not so much. I read a bunch and generally had a good time. But this was kind of an off week.
Aquaman and Wonder Woman got the Rebirth treatment, but neither issue wowed me in any way. Flash has started Rebirth as well, but for some reason, I still can’t bring myself to buy a Flash comic. It’s fascinating to me how few DC superheroes I’m actually invested in. Where’s Robin Rebirth? I guess Tim Drake’s revival in Detective Comics will have to do!
But it wasn’t all bad news this week! We’ve got the first issue of the Gotham Academy/Lumberjanes crossover! It’s not as amazing as I’d hoped, but it’s still a sign of hopefully great things to come! And it definitely picks up Comic Book of the Week!
Something wonderful!
Now we just need a Lumberjanes/Unbeatable Squirrel Girl crossover and I’ll be all set!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/4/2016
Rebirth is upon us! After kicking everything off with that big, debut issue last week, DC has churned out a couple of their Rebirth preview comics this week. They’ll get to the new #1 issues soon enough, but for now, we take a quick peek at Batman, Superman and Green Lanterns. I’m going to try out a couple different Rebirth comics coming up, and I checked out all three of these, to varying degrees of enjoyment.
But that’s not the only big release this week! Marvel delivers the first issue of their new Civil War II crossover! And I couldn’t care less! Jeez louise. I understand the desire to tie into the movie of the same name, but come on! I guess I’ll struggle through it.
Fortunately, this week also saw the release of All-New Wolverine and the new Pink Ranger solo mini-series, both of which were delightful. All-New Wolverine scores Comic Book of the Week once again.
How can you not love this?
Who knew I would like a Wolverine comic so much once they ditched Wolverine? Though this issue has more Wolverines than a regular comic.
