Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/22/16

Comics! We love them! And some more of them came out this week. I read a bunch and wrote some reviews, that I hope you’ll enjoy. We’ve got Squirrel Girl, we’ve got Doctor Doom, we’ve got Zephyr and we’ve got the Porcupine, among others. A whole cornucopia of fun comics!

Comic Book of the Week goes to Astonishing Ant-Man #13, the final issue of this wonderful series. It’s not the highest rated comic this week, and it still kind of annoys me with how poorly writer Nick Spencer handles his courtroom scenes, but gorram does this creative team have a lot of fun with their final issue.

It's like reading a movie!

Meanwhile, The Mighty Thor gave us the origin of Mjolnir! It’s really neat, but I decided to pass on reviewing the issue. Jason Aaron writes some great side stories.

Comic Reviews: Astonishing Ant-Man #13, Faith #4, Harley Quinn #6, Infamous Iron Man #1, Nightwing #7, Spider-Woman #12 and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #13.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/15/16

I need to stop convincing myself that I’m in good enough shape to go to Comic-Con. Maybe once upon a time I could handle it, but oh boy, last weekend in New York was misery! I had a lot of fun hanging out with my friends, but I was so winded and worn out that I didn’t actually see anything at Comic-Con. The most I can say is that I made it into the building and found a couple of nice chairs.

A two-hour line to get in will do that to you…

Anyway, the experience has not soured me on comics in general, and we’ve got some nice ones this week. Great Lakes Avengers and Mosaic kick off at Marvel, and I’ve decided to try Superwoman again. But the Comic of the Week goes to the final issue of Darth Vader for being its usual badass self!

None can stand in his wa

On the chopping block is the new Supergirl series. After two issues, I just don’t think it’s for me and I won’t be reviewing it going forward. I’m sure Supergirl fans will be happy with it, but I find it kind of mundane.

Comic Reviews: Darth Vader #25, Great Lakes Avengers #1,Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy #5, Mosaic #1, Power Man & Iron Fist #9 and Superwoman #3.

How Suicide Squad Should Have Ended, Plus Other Jokes

Aw man, poor How It Should Have Ended guys. They have a couple of really good jokes about Suicide Squad, but their actual alternate ending is a little light. Instead, they go for the tried and true method of falling back on their own running gags.

It also looks like they’re going to start telling a story with their running gags? I dunno, man. The jokes are fine, but I’m here to watch funny alternate endings! I was never particularly a fan of their Batman/Superman diner segments, or tying every single superhero property back to those diner segments. They’re just not as funny. But I bet they’ve got tons of fans, and I suppose they’ve got to protect and emphasize their brand, so here we are.

Still, lots more to make fun of about Suicide Squad

Billy Dee Williams’ Two-Face to Live On in LEGO Form!

I just discovered this fun little Easter Egg from the upcoming LEGO Batman Movie in a gallery of Batman LEGO images from New York Comic-Con and I thought I’d share: Apparently, the Two-Face character in The LEGO Batman Movie might be a Billy Dee Williams version! How else do you explain this very obvious looking LEGO figurine?

Just look at that Billy Dee Williams mustache!

Just look at that Billy Dee Williams mustache!

It’s not mentioned on Williams’ IMDB page, and I haven’t really been able to find anything through Google, other than some other people wondering the same thing. But just look at that mini-fig and tell me that’s not Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent!

As we all know, Williams played Harvey Dent in the 1989 Batman movie, with plans to eventually turn him into Two-Face. But by the time Hollywood got around to including Two-Face in the franchise, they switched out Williams for Tommy Lee Jones! Williams was robbed! I don’t think we’ve ever seen a black Two-Face. And this race change would have been decades ahead of its time!

Leave it to the people behind the LEGO movies to come up with the ultimate Easter Egg.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/8/16

Greetings from New York Comic-Con! I was in the Big Apple this weekend attending the big shindig and promoting Gamer Girl & Vixen, but that didn’t stop me from checking out this week’s stack of new comics. It also didn’t stop me from totally geeking out at all the great stuff on display at NYCC! If you’ve never been, you gotta go! There’s nothing else like a big comic convention these days! Hopefully I didn’t spend too much money…

I didn’t spend much on this week’s comics. Since I started traveling on Thursday, I knew I wouldn’t have much time to read and review a lot, so I’ve only got a couple of reviews this week! I checked out the #1 issues of Jessica Jones and Champions, and both were fine. But Harley Quinn #5 wins a truly outrageous Comic Book of the Week for an issue that’s pure gold.

I could never pull this off

I could never pull this off

I also considered reviewing Death of X #1 and Death of Hawkman #1 as if to create some kind of theme, but Death of X mostly left me bummed out, and I really really don’t care about Hawkman.

Comic Reviews: Champions #1, Harley Quinn #5 and Jessica Jones #1.
