Tell It Animated is Doing Top 10 Lists Now
Top Ten is no Top Six, I just wanna say. But I’ll share anything the genius animator over at Tell It Animated posts online. The dude’s work is sublime and I’m happy to share. They’re fun videos with which to start a good Monday. For this first Top 10 list, he’s done killer dolls.
Fun video, as always. Though I do find it kind of funny that, in order to fit his style, the animator introduces the dolls looking one way and then alters them to match their actual movie appearance. Like, so he just comes up with a generic-looking doll design for each of them and then alters them? That seems like a lot of extra steps. And I suppose he needs something to animate, otherwise he’d just be listing killer dolls.
A Top Ten animated list I’d like to see would be…coolest Transformers? Funniest G.I. Joes?

Two Great Bug-Themed Superhero Movie Trailers!
There have been a whole bunch of new trailers released over the past few days, possibly to get out in front of the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. That’s great news for me, because I love trailers! And here come two great ones!
First up is the new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. We get a bigger look at the worlds, we get our first look at the Spot, and we get some good looking conflict.
Looks great to me! There seems to be a lot going on, perhaps too much, based on this trailer. But I’m confident they’ll put it all together. Looks like Miles wants to save his father at the cost of saving the multiverse, and Miguel doesn’t want that to happen. Makes sense. But the animation looks beautiful. The Spot looks fun. The kajillion Spider characters are a hoot. We get our first look at Scarlet Spider!
This movie doesn’t need trailers. It’s going to be fire no matter what. Can’t wait! Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse comes to theaters on June 2.
Next up is the first trailer for Blue Beetle, our first look at this movie, and I think it looks good. We get a lot of flavor and character in this Blue Beetle trailer, and I like what I see.
I’ll admit, this trailer does seem to hit all the familiar beats of a superhero origin story. But the charm outweighs the tropes for me. Xolo Maridueña looks like he’s having fun as Jaime Reyes, and I love the family feel. George Lopez looks especially fun. And I think the Blue Beetle effects look really good. Blue Beetle looks like a fun movie. Can it overcome the DC curse that killed Black Adam and Shazam 2? We’ll find out. I think it looks good.
Blue Beetle comes to theaters on Aug. 18.

Pixar’s Elemental Looks Pretty Bland
The next Pixar film is called Elemental, and we got the first full trailer today. It clearly looks like a movie where someone said “what if elements had feelings”. And then they whipped together a pretty bland and basic script about love interests from different families getting together, despite being told that their kinds don’t mix.
Elemental looks really, really bland. The two main characters look bland. Their families look bland. Their conflict looks bland. Their world looks bland. Why make a joke about chain link fences not mattering to elements? Why not make a world so amazing that it doesn’t need chain link fences? Why not do something that actually involves elements instead of just using them as unnecessary metaphors?
I dunno. I’m not a Pixar filmmaker. But Elemental is what they’re sending to theaters on June 16.

Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken Looks Terrible
It’s Friday and I don’t have a lot to share, but one movie trailer did come across the internet yesterday and it’s terrible. The next Dreamworks animated film will be Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, and I think this thing looks like hot garbage. Judge for yourself, though be warned that this is one of those trailers that seems to give away the entire plot of the movie.
Everybody about this looks bad, from the character designs to the story to the plot points. Why is she posing as a regular human teenager? And if she is, how does she explain why she’s blue? And then it leads to a scene where she’s got super powers? Why does she specifically have a set of super powers, like a comic book character? This isn’t a superhero movie.
The only thing I can support about this film is that it seems to end this teenage, coming of age animated film with a kaiju battle, which is cool. But then that gives away the ending, right? Not cool, movie trailer.
Anyway, it’s Friday, let’s get to the weekend. Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken comes to theaters on June 30.

Ride Shiny and Bonkers on the Rainbow Road!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is on its way and they’ve treated us to one last trail ahead of the big premiere. This one is really bonkers, throwing all sorts of Mario stuff at the screen, from power-ups to the glory of Mario Kart. Clearly the filmmakers just wanted to pack as much Mario as possible into their Mario movie. Sounds fun to me!
Short, sweet, and still full of bad voice acting. This is the first time we’re hearing Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and…it’s just Seth Rogen. And Chris Pratt’s Mario remains terrible. Alas. But I’m hopefully going to be able to put that aside to just enjoy a wild and crazy Super Mario Bros. Movie. Bring it all on!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes to theaters on April 5.
