Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/15/17
Can you believe we have to wait all the way until November for another superhero movie? Man, what’s wrong with the world? Good thing we’ve got other comics to fill the time! Detective Comics, Hulk comics, Wonder Woman comics, X-Men comics and Squirrel Girl comics!
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl wins Comic Book of the Week because Ryan North and Erica Henderson revel in what it would actually be like to visit the Savage Land!
Gift shop pun game remains on point
I checked in on Amazing Spider-Man this week but decided not to review it because it’s largely a Secret Empire tie-in and I’m not super keen on reading or reviewing a ton of tie-ins. Thankfully, this tie-in is largely focused on Dan Slott’s ongoing story of Doc Ock taking back Parker Industries, so I dig that part of it. And it moves the Spider-Man/Mockingbird relationship forward a little, which I also like. But mostly it was a big, busy, crazy issue. So good times there!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/15/14
Where is all the love? Valentine’s Day was only yesterday, yet none of this week’s comics were lovey dovey in the very least! Where was the pink? Or the hearts? Maybe Cupid has gone crazy and starts attacking Gotham City? Not even a Star Sapphire one-shot special? I feel very disappointed.
Heck, not even Superman/Wonder Woman was all that romantic, unless you count fighting super-villains to be date material…which I do. But love aside, we’ve got a smattering of good comics this week, including the future of Harper Row over in Batman, and the future of Toad in Wolverine and the X-Men. I was very tempted to celebrate all things Toad this week, but the new She-Hulk series files the proper motions to become Comic Book of the Week.
Not that Toad wasn’t awesome…and a little romantic.

Movie Quicksilver Looks Like a Huge Dork
I’m not the first person on the Internet to say this, and I won’t be the last, but Quicksilver from this year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past movie looks like a huuuuge dork!
They took his name way too literally
He looks like the kind of guy who whines to Magneto whenever he calls him ‘Pietro’.
“But DaaaaAAAAaaad, my name is Quicksilver! Why don’t you ever take me seriously!?”
And I can just picture actor Evan Peters whining like that. This movie just took a big hit in credibility. I like the theory floating around the web that director Bryan Singer is purposefully trying to tank the character so that nobody takes him seriously when he shows up in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he’s probably going to be treated with much, much more respect. That sounds to me like exactly the sort of jerk move FOX would pull. They’re the ones who quickly found a way to squeeze Quicksilver into their X-Men movie after Joss Whedon announced he was using him for the Avengers sequel.
At least most of the other characters look good. Join me after the jump to see some of my favorites.
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/27/13
We check back in with a few different comics this week that I’ve skipped over in the past, namely Uncanny Avengers and Wolverine and the X-Men. The latter impressed me, if only for its superb use of Toad, while the former was kind of disappointing. The Marvel Universe is an odd place these days, and I just don’t think Uncanny Avengers really has a place in it. Maybe a few years ago it would have been something special, but these days, it’s lost in the shuffle.
Fortunately, Marvel is also publishing the excellent Superior Spider-Man comic, and I’ve finally given in to fan demand and read Avenging Spider-Man, now renamed Superior Spider-Man Team-Up. I liked it a lot, but this week it pals in comparison to the outright awesomeness of the Comic Book of the Week, Superior Spider-Man #14! Otto Octavius finally embraces his new Spider-Man persona, and it is glorious to behold!
How have we gone this long without Spider-Man henchmen?

Jason Aaron Answers My Toad Question on Twitter!
Score one for my brother!
If you saw my post earlier today about Toad, you may have also seen my brother’s suggestion to just use Twitter and ask the creators who changed Toad why they did it. I hadn’t taken that step on my own because I considered the issue to be just my rant on my blog, plus I haven’t totally embraced the Twitter machine when it comes to interacting with celebrity types.
But I guess it’s totally a thing. I may have to start doing more of it.
At any rate, I asked Wolverine and the X-Men writer Jason Aaron why he changed Toad back into his uglier form. This was the reply:
So that was pretty cool. It was definitely the reason I thought for the change. Plus he said we’ll see even more Toad later this year. Fantastic! More Toad is a good thing. Aaron has been doing a fantastic job with Toad as a supporting character in his comic.
