Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/1/16
Tomorrow is a big day, my henchies! I will be on my lonesome bringing Gamer Girl & Vixen to my first ever solo comic book convention! It’s Uticon right here in Central New York, so it’s not that huge of a deal. But it’s gonna be me, alone, selling comics and spreading the good word of Gamer Girl & Vixen. I might tell you how it went afterwards, if I feel up for it! Hopefully I don’t mess up completely.
And fortunately, we had some good comics this week! I’m going to take that as a good sign.
Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of Spider-Woman, for not only being it’s usual character-driven self, but also delivering a solid Civil War II tie-in. That is no easy task!
It also teases the Spider-Woman/Hulk relationship we never knew we wanted
I also picked up Teen Titans Rebirth #1 this week, but it was little more than a roll call issue for all the new members. I’m not going to do my usual big-sized reviews of Teen Titans anymore, but I’ll definitely give the new series a try on a Hench-Sized level. We’ll see how it goes.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/3/16
I’m on vacation again! I love me a good work vacation. I get a whole week to just hang out and relax. Read some comics. Watch some movies. I’ve got a whole list of stuff to do this week. Hopefully I get around to at least half of it and I don’t just spend the week playing video games. That could happen.
But until then, how about this week’s comics? We’ve got some good ones, like Kim & Kim and Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. We’ve also got a comic that breaks my little heart. Stupid Amazing Spider-Man #17!
Fortunately, writer Dan Slott almost redeems himself with a stellar Silver Surfer #200 anniversary issue! He wins Comic Book of the Week, but the guy is damn good at toying with my emotions.
I’ve read that comic, it’s really good
Saga also returned this week, but I’ve decided to stop reviewing that comic. Saga is an amazing story, and part of me thinks it’s meant to be read issue-by-issue, but I just don’t think I can be fair to the series that way. Some issues might be duller than others, but that does not bring down Saga as a whole. It’s a tough decision, but the only decision that matters is that you should be reading Saga.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/30/16
I was looking over my pile of comics this week to pick out what to review, and I was struck by a really cool realization: most of the comics in my pile star women! There was once a time, not too long ago, when female-led comics were few and far between. Oh how far we’ve come. So in honor of the first ever female major party candidate for U.S. President, this Hench-Sized Comic Book Review pile is dedicated to awesome superhero ladies!
We’ve got your Batgirl, your Harley Quinn, your Pink Power Ranger, your Wonder Woman, your Squirrel Girl, your Ms. Marvel; just a cavalcade of awesome female superheroes! And each and every issue is a blast! I feel almost guilty for all the good grades I’ve given everybody.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Batgirl #1, though it’s a hard choice to make. Most of the comics are mid-storyline, whereas the new Batgirl Rebirth relaunch nails the beginning and promises a nice new series.

As for some of my other regular titles, Detective Comics is great, with more Tim Drake awesomeness. The first issue of Nightwing Rebirth is solid, but leans too heavily on some dumb new antagonist. And the new issue of Civil War II is a solid reminder about why I should stop caring. I also read the new Captain Marvel, but it was kind of lame, so it didn’t make the cut for my all-women week.

Kamala Khan Is Getting an Action Figure!
Kamala Khan is getting an action figure, and I’m totally gonna buy it! I don’t know when it will come out, there’s no word on price, but just look at this beauty!

The toy was revealed at the start of Comic-Con this morning, along with a couple other options that I don’t particularly care about. All that matters is that Ms. Marvel is awesome and somebody out there has done something smart.

Oh Hey, the Great Lakes Avengers Are Gonna Come Back
Marvel Comics is on a roll announcing some of their new team books for the post-Civil War II era. Seeing as how I’m not one of the big comic book news sites, I’m just not going to be able to add my 2 cents to every reveal. But when we find out that the Great Lakes Avengers are going to get an ongoing series, I’m there!
Alas, no Dina Soar
I love these guys, and I think they would be pretty perfect in this era of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Patsy Walker a.k.a. Hellcat. If incoming writer Zac Gorman can take the humor and awesomeness of those books and apply it to a team book like the GLA, it should be pretty great! I’ve never read anything he’s done before, but I’m confident he’s got some chops. Apparently somebody trusted him with the Rick and Morty comic.
In darker news, Marvel also announced a new Champions book in the same vein today. This one kind of annoys me, because it harkens to Marvel’s new, displeasing habit of having no patience anymore. Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales and Nova are all members of this new Champions book…even though their membership in the All-New, All-Different Avengers was supposed to be a big deal only a year ago!
Why get invested in a new team book if Marvel’s just going to futz the lineup less than a year later? Are one or two stories worth the investment?
