Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/15/17

Can you believe we have to wait all the way until November for another superhero movie? Man, what’s wrong with the world? Good thing we’ve got other comics to fill the time! Detective Comics, Hulk comics, Wonder Woman comics, X-Men comics and Squirrel Girl comics!

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl wins Comic Book of the Week because Ryan North and Erica Henderson revel in what it would actually be like to visit the Savage Land!

Gift shop pun game remains on point

I checked in on Amazing Spider-Man this week but decided not to review it because it’s largely a Secret Empire tie-in and I’m not super keen on reading or reviewing a ton of tie-ins. Thankfully, this tie-in is largely focused on Dan Slott’s ongoing story of Doc Ock taking back Parker Industries, so I dig that part of it. And it moves the Spider-Man/Mockingbird relationship forward a little, which I also like. But mostly it was a big, busy, crazy issue. So good times there!

Comic Reviews: Defenders #3, Detective Comics #960, Hulk #8, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #22, Wonder Woman #26 and X-Men Blue #7.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/17/17

I need to read more DC Comics. There’s no getting around it. This week saw an overflow of Marvel Comics that I read, but I only found time to review one DC Comic. It’s shameful! To say nothing of my apparent inability to read any indie comics. I’m not trying to be a Marvel Zombie! I’m not!

But Marvel delivered both the best and the worst this week. For reasons I wish I had an answer for, the new Hulk series seemed to implode this week, undoing everything that made this series special. Meanwhile, Ms. Marvel kicks off a new story with everything I love about this comic, so I’m rather pleased to award it Comic Book of the Week!

What a perfectly cromulent throw

Secret Empire had a weird little issue this week. The idea that Captain America and HYDRA have completely conquered the United States has shrunk in scope to a race between two super-teams to get pieces of the broken Cosmic Cube. It makes for a fun enough comic as the two teams get treated to a family dinner from Ultron Pym.

Also, Batman has kicked off a rather continuity-heavy, mind-erasing bit of big story at DC. Gotta get caught up on that!

Comic Reviews: Defenders #1, Detective Comics #958, Generation X #3, Hulk #7, Ms. Marvel #19, and X-Men Blue #5.

The First Defenders Trailer Kicks Butt!

One of the big things I missed by being in the hospital this past week was the release of the first trailer for The Defenders! Stupid illness! I had to watch this thing on my phone on hospital wi-fi until I was able to get home. Fortunately, the trailer was awesome in both forms!

Everybody looks cool together, the dialogue seems nifty and, hopefully, the story is good. Hopefully it’s not just the Defenders fighting an endless wave of Hand ninjas.

The Defenders arrives on Netflix on Aug. 18 — a weekend I’ll be out of town at a comic book convention. So I’ll have to wait a bit before I can watch it. Alas. It’s a cruel world.

We’ve got Defenders Trailers Here! Step Right Up and Get Your Defenders Trailers!

Comic-Con is in full swing this weekend, and Marvel and Netflix came out swinging last night with a slew of trailers for their various upcoming TV shows. All of them look great, and I can’t wait to see the shows when they land on our viewing screens this Fall and next year. Plus, Daredevil has been confirmed for a third season, so that’s nice.

6 Thoughts on the Second Season of Daredevil

Like many comic book fans, I spent this past weekend binge-watching the new season of Daredevil. Once again, Marvel dominates entertainment. This show is everything we comic fans could possibly want from a Daredevil adaptation. It’s dark, it’s gritty, it’s charming, it’s exciting; this is damn fine television, and fits perfectly with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Season Rating: 9/10 – Great.

I also love the Netflix delivery system. I like being able to binge-watch an entire season in a few sittings, getting the whole story in one big go, rather than waiting week to week. It keeps me in the moment, it allows the writers to really dig deep into the material, and create a big tapestry of a story. I loved almost every episode, I loved every storyline, the new characters were great; Daredevil Season 2 was another huge success for Marvel!

Join me after the jump to hear my specific thoughts on the season. There will be MAJOR SPOILERS for the whole season, so read at your own risk.
