Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/18/23

This was a real interesting week for comics. None of my regular titles came out, but there were several comics I had let fall by the wayside. So…I caught up and may return to reviewing the likes of Astonishing Iceman!

Comic Book of the Week goes to Fantastic Four #13 for an excellent dinosaur adventure.

Superheroes riding identical dinosaur versions of themselves?! How is this not a cartoon or an action figure line yet?

Meanwhile, I’m spending this weekend resisting the urge to buy Super Mario Bros. Wonder. I beat Spider-Man 2 and need a new game to play, but I also have other options besides spending $60 for that sweet new Mario game. It sure would be fun to play, though…

Comic Reviews: Astonishing Iceman #4, Fantastic Four #13 and Outsiders #1.

Marvel Trailer Thursday

Look, I don’t run the world. I didn’t decide that two trailers for Marvel projects would come out yesterday, even if one was only Marvel adjacent. I like to share trailers. Here are some neat trailers. What am I supposed to do about it, other than share them?!

First up is the good trailer, for the second season of What If…?

Looks great to me! Avengers circa 1980s MCU? Heck yeah! Everybody on the Collector’s planet doing deadly stock car racing? Heck yeah! There’s supposed to be a Christmas episode. And a 1602 episode. So I’m fully on board with more of this cartoon. It’s gonna come out daily at Christmas, which is a neat idea. Let’s see how that works!

Next up is the trailer, and our first real look, at Madame Web. This is gonna be a dumpster fire.

I have always thought this movie would be a trainwreck, and this trailer confirms it. Man, what a mess. I’m not entirely sure what’s even happening, but it does not look good. Madame Web is the worst possible choice Sony could have made for another attempted Spider-Man adjacent movie, and they have done nothing with the character. Throw in a bunch of other female Spider characters from Marvel, and it just gets worse.

This is gonna be a big disaster than Morbius. Madame Web comes out for Valentine’s Day.

6 Thoughts on The Marvels

The Marvels has arrived in theaters and the writing is on the wall: this one isn’t doing so hot. The critics haven’t cared for it, the box office is very disappointing and it’s not going to be a good ride, probably. But I don’t care about any of that. I very much enjoyed this film and had a good time at the theater!

Movie Rating: 8/10 – Very Good

I am an unrepentant Marvel fanboy. I have enjoyed pretty much all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe output, with probably Secret Invasion being the only stinker in my opinion. I was prepared for The Marvels to live up to all of the negative hype, but it was a blast! It was funny and entertaining, and well worth a short, breezy watch. I have never missed an MCU movie in the theater and I’m not about to start anytime soon.

Join me after the jump for my full thoughts on The Marvels. Expect FULL SPOILERS for the film. And feel free to share your own thoughts in the comments below.

TV Trailer Tuesday

Yesterday was all about sharing movie trailers. Today is all about sharing TV show trailers. Makes sense, right? Movies on Monday, TV shows on Tuesday. Keep up. Anyway, a couple really good TV show trailers came out in the past week, and I wanna share. It’s what I do.

First up is Masters of the Universe: Revolution. I really, really enjoyed Revelation and can’t wait for more in this series.

We don’t see too much in that trailer, but we’ve got more Skeletor, Motherboard and now Hordak. Will we get She-Ra? If only. I can hope. And I can also hope that my favorite character, Snout Spout, shows up. He’s the one I had an action figure of, and I want him in the show!

Masters of the Universe: Revolution is coming to Netflix in January.

Next up is the full trailer for Reacher season 2.

I really enjoyed the first season of Reacher. It was a solid, enjoyable action show, and Alan Ritchson is a cool guy. So by all means, enjoy more of your hit show! Make it just as good as season 1. Do it right.

Reacher season 2 comes to Amazon Prime on Dec. 15.

Finally, our first look at Dead Boy Detectives, the spin-off from Doom Patrol and Sandman.

I never read the comics, but any season created by Neil Gaiman is going to be a hoot! And I’m going to be fully on board. Looks like a fun, spooky show and I’m sure it will be.

Dead Boy Detectives is coming to Netflix soon.

Movie Trailer Monday

A bunch of movie trailers, mostly for streaming services, have come out lately and seem to just be piling up on my bookmarks bar. I want to share them on the blog, because I really enjoy movie trailers myself. But rather than stretch the out for too long, let’s just dump them all on this glorious Monday!

First up is Rebel Moon: Part One: A Child of Fire, the big space epic from Zack Snyder.

Looks pretty good to me. It looks big, it looks epic, it looks small at the same time. It looks like a bunch of classic space opera tropes glued together. It looks like his kind of movie. I’m no Snyderhead, so I’m not about to bend over backwards in praise of this film. But I’ll probably gladly watch it when it comes to Netflix on Dec. 22.

Next up is Damsel, another movie coming to Netflix starring Millie Bobby Brown.

Not much to see yet with this movie. I think it’s taking the princess and dragon cliche and turning it into its own movie somehow. I suppose I could look up a plot synopsis and see for sure…but nah. I like Brown, I like the Enola Holmes movies, and I hope she does indeed find a good career after Stranger Things. Damsel is coming to Netflix next year.

Switching gears to Peacock, we have Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain.

I love the Please Don’t Destroy sketches on Saturday Night Live as much as the next person. They’re funny stuff. Granted, my love for these comedians took a big hit when I found out that two of them were nepo babies of longtime SNL alumni…but whatever. They’re still funny, and seeing them make a feature length streaming movie should be fun. Please Don’t Destroy comes to Peacock on Nov. 17…so this Friday!

Lastly, an actual movie in theaters, it’s The Fall Guy!

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt make a fun action comedy where a stuntman becomes a real action hero. Sounds fun, looks fun, and we’ll probably take any movie we can get next year after those strikes. Lot of hope going into this one.

The Fall Guy comes to theaters on March 1.
