Yep! We’re Getting That Ant-Man Comic!

There have been a ton of announcements out of New York Comic-Con this weekend, and I’ve only been posting a few due to things like laziness and weekend. But I definitely wanted to mention the official announcement of the new Ant-Man series to line up with the upcoming film. The comic will star Scott Lang, and will be written and drawn by Nick Spencer and Ramon Rosanas. I loved Spencer’s Superior Foes of Spider-Man, so here’s hoping for some great Ant-Man action!

I love the new costume design. Seriously, Ant-Man has some of my favorite superhero costumes of all time (and he also has some real stinkers). It sounds like the series is just going to be Scott Lang doing normal, superhero things. Here’s hoping Spencer can find the same magic that made Hawkeye such an amazing comic.

Of the series, Spencer said:

“I’m just so excited to be doing this book,” Spencer said, saying this had been on his radar since the summer of 2013. Featuring Scott Lang, “Scott is a character I really connect with,” he said. “Scott wants to be a hero and he wants to be a good guy, but he’s got a checkered past, he has a tendency to take shortcuts and get in his own way… all these marks of a great Marvel character.”

Sounds like a pretty solid basis for an Ant-Man series to me! I hope they keep love interest Darla Deering around from the pages of Matt Fraction’s FF!

Our First Look at the New Daredevil!

The biggest panel at New York Comic-Con this weekend was the debut of the Daredevil TV show coming to Netflix. Most of the cast was in attendance, and were I in New York right now, I would have been too. Suffice to say, it was apparently a pretty neat panel. You can check out Newsarama’s coverage of the panel here. It sounds like they’ve got a neat show planned.

The panel also debuted the first picture of actor Charlie Cox in ‘costume’!

It’s clearly an homage to the first live action Daredevil

Of course, that looks nothing like the real Daredevil costume. So I think it’s safe to say this is perhaps his prototype? Maybe when Matt Murdock first starts fighting crime, he’s goes for a simple black number, and then later he dons the full, badass-looking red costume. And yes, I said ‘badass’. You’re looking at a guy who enjoyed the first Daredevil movie. I really don’t get why people hated it. The Director’s Cut is even better!

Also during the panel, we found out that reporter Ben Urich and supervillain/mob boss The Owl will both be in the show! They will be played by Vondie Curtis-Hall and Bob Gunton respectively! Could this mean an appearance by Phil Urich?

Someone tell me if Marvel has the rights to Phil Urich!!!

I’m really looking forward to this show and the whole slate of Defenders shows on Netflix. I may even have to finally subscribe to Netflix to make sure I can see them all!

As if I needed more monthly bills…

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/11/14

What a week to be a fan of comics! Not only is the New York Comic-Con going on this weekend, but the long-awaited debut of the new Batgirl hit the stands, and it easily slides into Comic Book of the Week. The comic is as good as I’d hoped it would be and more. If the creative team keeps this up, Ms. Marvel might have a little competition for my favorite comic!

It doesn’t help that poor Kamala Khan is rushed off to guest-star in this week’s Amazing Spider-Man. Crossovers and team-ups like this are so painfully forced, especially in this day and age, but writer Christos Gage gives it the old college try. He also manages to slip in a little fan ‘shipping for the fun of it!

But seriously, Batgirl definitely kicks butt!

She’s also an expert at threats!

Over at Word of the Nerd, you can check out my review of Axis #1. The big new crossover kicked off this week with an issue that felt more like the end than the beginning, at least in terms of spectacle – and that wasn’t a good thing.

Gritty Adventure Time Trailer is Mathematical!

You all know how much I love gritty reboots, well the Gritty Reboots Youtube channel has fashioned an Adventure Time trailer that is not only awesome in its own right, but so perfectly encapsulates the show! This is some top class Internetting!

That was just gorgeous. It was clearly made by fans of the show, who probably spent a week or so awesomely cosplaying all the characters. And the special effects were just grand! Did you see Jake?! That was insanely good! I need to keep my eye on thi schannel.

Disney Trailer Double-Tap!

We’ve got a pair of trailers for a couple of upcoming Disney movies, so I thought I’d group them together and let you all know that I think they look pretty good. I’ve loved trailers since I was a wee little Sean, and we’re living in a golden age of movie trailers. So I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Big Hero 6

Tomorrowland

I hadn’t heard about that Tomorrowland film, but it’s apparently by Brad Bird, the guy who made The Iron Giant and The Incredibles. That counts for everything.
