Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/13/24
Another busy week at work had me just posting a bunch of trailers this week. Work can be a real bitch sometimes, ya know? But I didn’t want to miss out on the good comics this week, like Transformers and The Ultimates.
Comic Book of the Week goes to X-Men #1 for a solid, enjoyable start to the new From the Ashes relaunch. I hope it all goes well!
Meanwhile, I did read the Absolute Power stuff from DC last week, I just didn’t get around to reviewing it because of the week I had. I enjoyed it well enough, though the first issue and tie-ins haven’t pulled me out of my general malaise towards Big Events. I’ll probably stick with it for the time being.
Comic Reviews: Transformers #10, The Ultimates #2 and X-Men #1.

They missed the Fourth of July by one week!
Anyway, I had no idea this “teaser” trailer was coming out today, but I’m glad for it! I remain a Marvel diehard, and have full faith in Captain America: Brave New World. I loved The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and I’m excited to see what happens next.
This trailer was awesome! It’s so well put together, and I love a trailer like that. We’ve got all the building blocks for this opening mystery, we’ve got some good stuff between Sam Wilson and the president. Then the action picks up. And the trailer doesn’t shy away from comparing Sam to Steve Rogers. That’s a plus and will hopefully help people get on board. And having Harrison Ford in your movie trailer can’t hurt.
Also, Red Hulk confirmed! Though if they were going to reveal him in this trailer, I think they could have done a better job than that glimpse.
Captain America: Brave New World comes out on Feb. 14!

Rick and Morty is Gonna Be a Wild Anime
I still enjoy watching Rick and Morty, even if it’s heyday is behind us. I still enjoy watching South Park, too. I’m just that kind of cartoon guy. And I definitely enjoy when shows like this take a big swing. Rick and Morty has now produced 10 episodes of Rick and Morty: The Anime, and it looks wild.
So yeah, not entirely sure what to make of that trailer other than just being generally excited! It looks wild, it looks weird, it’s made from real anime people. The show is already pretty wild, but this one could be so weirdly fun. I’m fully on board and can’t wait to watch!
Rick and Morty: The Anime is coming to Adult Swim and Max on Aug. 15.

Putting the Glad in Gladiator II
So, uh, there’s going to be a Gladiator 2. Granted, that first movie does not hold a monopoly on any and all gladiator movies for all time. It’s just a little weird that we’ve reached this point in our legacy sequels. But who am I kidding? Hollywood loves reusing a recognizable brand name. We’ve got a Beetlejuice sequel coming out in the fall, after all.
This trailer feels a little silly to still be in a Maximus universe. It fees like it’s trying too hard. But the trailer was also full of all sorts of action and characters and stuff you’d expect to see. Weird Roman rulers amped up to 11. This movie is probably going to be exactly what we all assume it will be.
Gladiator II comes to theaters on Nov. 22.

Agatha All Along is Actually Happening
Once upon a time, Marvel Studios felt unbeatable, and they greenlit a Wandavision spin-off about Agatha Harkness. Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza are amazing, but can they make a good show out of this character? The first trailer sure looks witchy and spooky enough.
I think it looks alright. And I’ll definitely be watching. I still have all sorts of faith in Marvel and will gladly watch what they put out. So bring on Agatha Harkness! Give her all sorts of spooky fun adventures. Make it a good show! We’ll find out later this year.
Agatha All Along comes to Disney+ on Sept. 18.
