Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/9/19

Woohoo! Good news everybody, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is awesome! Maybe not as surprisingly magical as the first film, but no less funny, touching, colorful and just plain fun. I need more comics to be exactly like the LEGO movies.

Instead, we get comics that are fun in their own rights, like Champions, X-23 and Young Justice. Comic Book of the Week goes to another stellar issue of The Green Lantern, a comic that is definitely living up to the hype.

GL Chooses Life 01

Spoken like a true wildcard

Meanwhile, I read the first proper issue of the Age of X-Man and it was fine. It was about the basic X-Men team and it was about what I expected. The twist of the universe has already been revealed, and we know these are our regular main characters living in a made-up fantasy. So there’s no real sense of permanence and stakes, as far as I’m concerned. They’ll tell whatever story they need to tell, and then we’ll move on.

Comic Reviews: Champions #2, The Green Lantern #4, Tony Stark – Iron Man #8, Uncanny X-Men #11, X-23 #9 and Young Justice #2.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/2/19

Last week was a wasteland of new comics I like to read, and this week drops a bunch! How do you like them apples, eh? Suffice to say, I had a lot to read and enjoy this week.

Action Comics and Wonder Woman are both enjoyable out of DC, and my opinion starts to change for the better on Heroes in Crisis. Then we’ve got Marvel dropping a solid Ms. Marvel and West Coast Avengers. But the real standout, a true gem of a comic, is the new issue of Unstoppable Wasp. This is a rare game-changer of an issue and easily wins Comic Book of the Week.

Nadia Not Fine 02

This is fine. Everything is fine.

Could be a standout for Comic Book of the Year.

Meanwhile, I read the Alpha issue for Age of X-Man and it looks fine. Pretty bare bones, with more than a few obvious glitches in the manufactured reality. I still haven’t decided how I’ll cover the event. I’m not about to buy and read every single issue…but maybe I won’t buy or review any of them. All I know for sure is that I’m excited to see what Leah Williams does with the Blob.

Comic Reviews: Action Comics #1007, Captain America #7, Heroes in Crisis #5, Ms. Marvel #37, Unstoppable Wasp #4, West Coast Avengers #7 and Wonder Woman #63.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/26/19

This is one of those weeks where nothing I read comes out. Sometimes there are weeks where nearly a dozen of my favorite comics come out. And then there are weeks like this one, where barely a handful come out. It’s weird. But hey, less work and expense for me.

I picked up the new issue of Aquaman, which may be my last. And I picked up the first issue of Donny Cates’ new Guardians of the Galaxy out of pure Beta Ray Bill curiosity. I also went back and reviewed Champions #1, as requested. Comic Book of the Week goes to Guardians of the Galaxy #1! Good for it.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 4

Meanwhile, Marvel resurrected Cyclops for real in an annual issue this week. Considering I was a pretty big proponent of my own Cyclops-related conspiracy theory, I might consider doing another rant about how they’ve neutered poor Cyclops again. I’ll think about it.

Quick note: I forgot to attach the cover images to my reviews, and now I’m at work so I can’t. I’ll fix that later.

Comic Reviews: Aquaman #44, Champions #1, Guardians of the Galaxy #1.

6 Thoughts on the Second Season of The Punisher

The second and probably last season of The Punisher arrived on Netflix this past weekend, and after binging the whole thing, I’m ready for the Netflix Defenders shows to end. It was a fine experiment, there’s some decent TV on the whole, but let’s move on.

punisher season 2 list 01

TV Show Rating: 4/10 – Pretty Bad

I should preface this whole post with a warning to take my thoughts with a grain of salt. I’ve only ever been a moderate Punisher fan, but I hold Garth Ennis’ Punisher MAX comic as one of the greatest comic book runs of all time. I reread nearly all 10+ volumes at least once a year, I love it so much. So when it comes to reviewing anything new about the Punisher, I am hugely biased in one certain direction.

And for the second season in a row, The Punisher TV show on Netflix is nothing like Punisher MAX. The show is its own thing, and I can respect that. I’d like it even more if that own thing was good. But as we’ll discuss, I didn’t care for this season.

Join me after the jump for my thoughts on The Punisher season 2! Feel free to share your own review in the comments. And be aware of FULL SPOILERS for the entire show.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/19/19

Hoo boy, I don’t have many review columns like this one. I’m not paid by anyone to do this blog, nor do I get kick backs or free comics from any of the major publishers I review. It’s just me, some dude, buying and reading comics, and then writing up my thoughts on a hobby blog. And as such, I really only buy and read comics I enjoy.

But sometimes there comics I want to try that just turn out bad. And this week saw a slew of bad or problematic comics, from Ironheart to Wonder Woman to the final issue of the big Uncanny X-Men storyline. I apologize in advance for being mean to these issues. Fortunately, the latest issue of Fantastic Four was still enjoyable, so it gets Comic Book of the Week!

doom bands 01

I love when Doctor Doom uses the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak!

Meanwhile, I think I’m going to drop Catwoman. The opening story arc was fine, but I’m not all that interested in Catwoman as a character right now, and the series just didn’t grab me. Joelle Jones is a fantastic creator, though. I love her art.

Comic Reviews: Fantastic Four #6, Ironheart #2, Uncanny X-Men #10 and Wonder Woman #62.
