Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/17/22
Interesting week for new comics! Not too much on my read list this week, but I got to try out some new titles that launched from Marvel. There’s a new Invincible Iron Man, by Gerry Duggan, and then Monica Rambeau’s first ongoing solo series. Both are solid starting points.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Monica Rambeau: Photon #1 because I felt it was the stronger, more interesting of the two.
Meanwhile, I’ve started playing Marvel’s Midnight Suns and it’s pretty fun so far. I loved the X-Com games, and I kinda wish this was more like those. But it’s solid as its own thing, so no real complaints. I’ve also been playing a ton of Marvel Snap, so I’m just up to my eyeballs in Marvel video games right now. I’m also heading to see Avatar: The Way of Water this weekend, so hopefully that will be nice.
Comic Reviews: The Invincible Iron Man #1, Legion of X #8 and Monica Rambeau: Photon #1.

This trailer came out a couple of days ago, but I’ve been having an off week. Just not feeling it. But hey, at least this trailer is pretty cool. We get a big, fun look at a Spider-Verse full of Spider-People! That counts for a lot.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a hugely anticipated movie, by me and pretty much everybody else. Can it live up to the excitement of the first film? You’re damn right it can, and I really hope it does! I want a sequel that’s bigger and better! I know it can be done! We don’t have much on the story yet, or any really stand out new characters — and no sign of the Spot. But i know this one is gonna be a banger!
Across the Spider-Verse comes out in June.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/10/22
I was pretty busy this week with day job stuff, but I managed to get some comics read and get this review list together. Is it my best ever? No. Whatever is? We’ve got new Batman, new Fantastic Four and even new Jessica Jones.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #7 for an all-around really good issue of character building. Though to be honest, this week was a real toss up.
Meanwhile, I had a pretty sad realization about comics. This week saw the release of, like, half a dozen different ongoing X-Men comics…but I’m not reading any of them. Judgement Day tuned me out of the titles I was reading, and I don’t know if I have the time, energy or inclination to get back on board. I still enjoy the idea of the Krakoa Era, just don’t really care about most of the individual comics. Oh well.
Comic Reviews: Batman #130, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #7, Fantastic Four #2 and The Variants #5.

Christmas Time is here! Magic is in the air. It’s cold out. Life moves on. And we got some really good comics this week. Granted, it was a fifth week, so that usually leads to some smaller offerings. But I was pleased with stuff like Strange Academy and X-Terminators.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Justice Society of America #1 for a strong, if potentially confusing, first issue. Everybody had better have done their homework ahead of this one.
Meanwhile, I’m enjoying Pokemon Violet, though I can never seem to find time to play it. That’s on me. But then there’s no harm in taking it slowly. I loved the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. It was so heartwarming! And I got to see Glass Onion in theaters, which was marvelous. So things are going rather well for me in pop culture land.
Comic Reviews: Justice Society of America #1, Strange Academy: Finals #2 and X-Terminators #3.

A big comic convention took place in Brazil yesterday, and that led to a whole bunch of big, new trailers arriving online. A lot of them are probably gearing up for Avatar: The Way of Water, but what sort of Thursday gives us the first trailers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? These are three big movies that I’m really excited about! Or at least two of them. I’m not big on Indiana Jones.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
I was never a big Indiana Jones fans. I loved the movies as a kid, sure, but I’m no super fan. And Kingdom of the Crystal Skull didn’t make anybody happy. But we’re back with Dial of Destiny and it looks fine. Pretty much fun. Harrison Ford looks old and Harrison Fordy. Phoebe Waller-Bridge will hopefully be cool. But ultimately we’re all going to be sad that they couldn’t squeeze Short Round into this movie. He’s acting again. Did you see Everything Everywhere All At Once? It’s a masterpiece!
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny comes to theaters on June 30.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
I loved Beast Wars. I even loved Beast Machines! They were great shows, really cutting edge in the 1990s for a multitude of reasons, not just the CGI animation. It had rich stories, rich characters and that one cool Maximal that was half wolf/half eagle. Silverbolt! He’s my favorite! But he’s not gonna be in this movie. I’m excited for this film. I didn’t even know it was happening! I thought they were maybe making a Beast Wars chapter of that recent Transformers Netflix cartoon? I dunno…guess it’s a full movie!
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will arrive on June 9.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Here’s the one we’ve been waiting for! We should have gotten this movie years ago, if it wasn’t for all that trouble James Gunn had. I think it’s all worked out for the best, though. We got The Suicide Squad, we got Peacemaker, we got the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and we’re still getting Volume 3. So it’s all worked out nicely. And this one should be amazing! Gunn is gonna tug on all of our heart strings by finishing Rocket’s story. Should be a hoot.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes out on May 5.
