Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/21/17
In my efforts to avoid the dark days that have befallen America, I’d like to focus on comic books today! It’s what I do every Saturday, but we could really, really use some heroic superheroes right now. Fortunately for us, we’ve got a nice smattering of comics.
Some are really good, like Nightwing, U.S. Avengers and more, while others are just OK, like Harley Quinn, Iron Man and a new Captain Marvel debut. And some are just a ton of fun, like this week’s Comic Book of the Week, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #11!

Black Ranger means business
Meanwhile, The Clone Conspiracy finally gets good as writer Dan Slott delivers some actually, worthwhile character-based drama. Any Spider-Man story can instantly be made better by focusing on Otto and Anna Maria. Though this is also the issue where Ben Reilly goes full villain, so there’s that, too.

New Logan Trailer Is OK, I Guess
Compared to the Mighty Morpin’ craziness of the Power Rangers trailer earlier, I just don’t think this new Logan trailer holds up. The tone could be interesting, but what exactly are we seeing here? Old Man Logan learns to be a softy again thanks to impressionable young girl?
At least they seem to be getting their R-ratings’ worth of swear words and blood. I suppose that counts for something to movie executives.

6 Insane Characters Peter Dinklage Could Play Other Than Pip the Troll
Awesome actor extraordinaire Peter Dinklage was recently announced as being in talks to star in the two upcoming Avengers sequels. So I had the bright idea of doing a List of Six about the possible roles that Dinklage could play. Of course, the entire rest of the Internet had the very same idea. Clearly great minds think alike.
So much Dinklage attention!
The smart thing to do would be to cut my losses and just do another list. But then I got to thinking: why not just be lazy and make my own list anyway? I’ve never done a list about Peter Dinklage before. Why not? Besides, pretty much everybody on the Internet has pegged Dinklage for the same handful of potential characters: Pip the Troll, the Watcher, Mephisto, Adam Warlock or M.O.D.O.K. And yeah, these are all solid ideas.
But what if I opened up the awesome expanse of my geeky mind and came up with six character possibilities that no sane person would possibly consider?! Yeah, that might be fun.
Marvel is Definitely Still Trolling the X-Men
We’re only 2.5 issues into Inhumans vs. X-Men, but it’s quite clear to me that Marvel is still trolling the X-Men as hard as humanly possible. I’ve written about this before, and I don’t know why I’m surprised that Inhumans vs. X-Men is continuing the trend. Of course Marvel is trolling the X-Men in favor of the Inhumans. They’ve been doing it for years, and they’re quite good at it.
My theory is this: Ever since X-Men: Schism, and definitely peak Avengers vs. X-Men, Marvel has been writing the X-Men as the clear, reasonable good guy in any situation, but they’ve been presenting the X-Men as the bad guys.
It’s a clear case of history being written by the winners.
Oh Kamala Khan, must they drag you into everything?
It happened to Cyclops in Schism. It happened to the X-Men in Avengers vs. X-Men. It happened to Cyclops again in both Uncanny X-Men and Death of X. And now that the X-Men are going up against Marvel’s beloved Inhumans, it is happening again in Inhumans vs. X-Men.

We Are Totally Getting a Ben Reilly as Scarlet Spider Comic Book
The inevitable is now confirmed: the original Scarlet Spider will be getting his own comic again. Right now, Ben Reilly has come back from the dead in Clone Conspiracy as the semi-villainous Jackal. The story isn’t over, but Marvel is totally cool about revealing that he’ll survive the story and come out the other side as the star of Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider.
His costume isn’t very good.
What is up with that Spidercide-esque mouth?
It also looks worse than the last guy to star in a Scarlet Spider comic, Kaine. That black and red costume was the bomb.
Speaking of whom, Kaine will also be a major character in the new comic, so that’s awesome. I find myself liking Kaine more than Ben these days. I look forward to seeing the two of them butting heads in the new comic!
