My 6 Favorite Video Game Characters
In honor of Wreck-It Ralph, this week’s blog list is all about my favorite video game characters! Though sadly, none of them appeared in the movie. Still, being the huge fan I am of fiction and storytelling, I actually pay a lot of attention to the stories and characters in video games. It’s not just all about mashing buttons for me. These are characters for whom I’ll go out of my way to play, or I’ll pick them all the time when it comes to gaming. Sometimes with annoying frequency.
A lot of video games have a surprisingly deep mythology around them. Heck, even Angry Birds has the backstory of the pigs stealing the birds’ eggs – or something. And I often like to immerse myself in these stories. One of the biggest reasons I love World of Warcraft so much is because of the story and the lore. It helps that some of these games get cartoon shows, novels, comics or movies to help expand the story. Not that any of those things has particularly explained why King Koopa will kidnap Princess Peach in one game, and then race go-karts or play soccer with her in the next.
Mario even invites both of them to his frequent parties, as if that won’t make for an awkward evening. But questionable decisions by plumbers aside, here are my six favorite video game characters!
6 Coolest Comic Book Ghosts
BOO!! Did I scare you? No? Oh well, I tried my best. I’ve never been much of a horror fan, either books or movies, but I absolutely love Halloween. I love it when society as a whole unites behind this sort of epic pageantry. All the kids in the world dressing in costume to get free candy door-to-door? Awesome! A day where it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a costume to work or to class? Sign me up! I’ve already bought the spooky pumpkin mask I plan to wear when I’m out and about on Wednesday. Not to mention the Batman tie I only wear on Halloween.
Or maybe I should just walk around wearing a sheet over my head. Because what’s more synonymous with Halloween than ghosts?
And when we’re talking about science fiction and super powers, who better to use than ghosts? They’re spooky, mysterious, and often associated with horrible murder! Plus they have a ton of super powers. They can fly, pass through walls, howl, and wear pretty awesome sheets. So it should come as no surprise that ghosts are a pretty popular topic when it comes to comic books. For Halloween this year, I’ve put together a list of the 6 ‘ghoulest’ ghosts in all of comics!
6 Best and 6 Worst Male Superhero Halloween Costumes
We are living in a golden age of dressing up as a superhero for Halloween. The success of the superhero film industry has made them the #1 choice for any Halloween party-goer or trick-or-treater. Heck, The Dark Knight alone had to have raised the Joker costume quotient by 2,000%! And I would hope to see a ton of Avengers costumes this year.
I did a List of Six last year about the best and worst female superhero costumes, and it’s been a pretty popular list this fall. So I decided to revisit the idea and do a list of the best and worst male superhero costumes. Being the nerd that I am, the list is based on two things: costume quality and accuracy. This isn’t about the most popular costumes. The girls’ list was also judged on sluttiness, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for men. Superheroes should be an obvious Halloween costume, because the heroes are wearing costumes themselves. So one would think that designing a Halloween costume should involve just recreating the superhero’s costume as accurately as possible.
Apparently not. But sometimes they get it right. All of these costumes were found online available for sale.
6 Future Expansions for World of Warcraft
World of Wacraft is pretty much as popular today as it’s ever been, and shows no signs of slowing down. With the help of their latest expansion – Mists of Pandaria – subscriptions jumped back over 10 million gamers living, fighting and generally raising a ruckus in the virtual world of Azeroth. And let me tell you guys, I do not regret at all getting back into the game this past month after a more than two year break. There are so many new things to do and see that I’ve been playing nearly non-stop since late August and have barely even scratched the surface of the fun to be had.
And being a Pandaren Brewmaster is definitely as awesome as I had hoped!
Mists of Pandaria will be the focus for the next few years, but somebody somewhere at Blizzard is already plotting out what their next expansion will include. Usually, the main point of the expansion is to increase the level cap and introduce new continents and dungeons to explore, because the majority of WoW players have already maxed out their characters and are looking for more end-game content. But that’s not all you get in new expansions. Usually you also get a new playable race (pandaren, goblins, blood elves, etc.), a new class (death knight, monk) or just general new features like the new Pet Battles, which basically bring a rudimentary form of Pokemon into Warcarft just for kicks and giggles. The people are Blizzard are geniuses when it comes to new content to expand their ever-growing world.
And seeing what a huge World of Warcraft fan I am, I thought I’d give them a hand with 6 suggestions for new expansion content.
6 Potential Marvel Crossovers After the Success of Avengers vs. X-Men
So what the heck is Marvel going to do now that Avengers vs. X-Men is over? It sold incredibly well, and definitely got a lot of mileage out of the hero vs. hero concept. Marvel pretty much struck gold! No doubt they want to capture that same magic again. Because if the entertainment industry has taught us anything, it’s that if one thing is popular, then repeating that thing over and over again will be just as popular! How else do you think we get most movie sequels?
But what can Marvel do next after Avengers vs. X-Men?
I don’t know about you, but I liked Avengers vs. X-Men. It was action-packed and had a lot of neat, complicated character growth, even if the whole thing was a little bloated. But it was big in scope, and really took the characters on an epic, world-saving adventure. If Marvel is hoping that lightning strikes twice in the same place, I have a few suggestions for them.
