Scarlet Spider to Return in New Warriors!

Scarlet Spider may be getting cancelled in December, but Marvel has revealed that the character will continue on in a brand new New Warriors series in February! The announcement was made today at New York City Comic-Con. The book will be written by Chris Yost, who wrote Scarlet Spider, with art by Marcus To!

Now that’s a team!

And yes, that’s Aracely! Looks like she’s going to become a real superhero!

The new team is going to focus on Justice, Speedball and the new Nova, and along with Kaine and Aracely, there will be Sun Girl, Haechi and Water Snake. I think those three are brand new characters.

I don’t know much about the new team at this point, other than it sounds like it’ll be some pretty standard superheroics, New Warriors style. In this interview with Newsamara, Yost is promising big action, big superheroics and important stories to the Marvel Universe. I wish him all the best, and I know I’ll be reading, if only for more Scarlet Spider action. Though why Kaine would join a team is beyond me.

There is a ton of news coming out of Marvel this Comic-Con. So far, I’ve only mentioned the series that my blog focuses on, but tomorrow I’ll do a round-up of all the new comics. There are soooo many, and they all look good!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/12/13

I wish I was at the New York Comic-Con this weekend. I’ve been twice so far, but it’s been a few years since my last visit. Though if I was in New York, I couldn’t pick up Pokemon X later today. So I guess there are trade-offs. But there seems to be a lot of cool comic book news coming out of the Comic-Con, and I’m definitely the kind of guy that finds that exciting.

Speaking of comics, how about this week’s reviews? We’ve got a super-sized issue of Batman that’s pretty good, and the first issue of Superman/Wonder Woman, which could be better. We’ve also got the continuing chapters of Infinity, Battle of the Atom and Lights Out, one of which is better than the others. In fact, and I’m kind of shocked that I’m saying this, but I think my Comic Book of the Week has to go to Infinity #4! I know! I’m appalled myself!

But when Battle of the Atom delivers its worst issue yet, and Infinity delivers its best, that sort of thing leads to Opposite Day.

Hopefully this isn’t going to be the case going forward. Though I wouldn’t mind if both Infinity and Battle of the Atom were good.

Comic Reviews: Batman #24, Green Lantern Corps #24, Infinity #4, Superman/Wonder Woman #1, Thor: God of Thunder #14, and X-Men #6.

All-New X-Factor Revealed!

New York Comic-Con is in full swing today, and announced just this morning was All-New X-Factor by Peter David! We all knew this was coming, but it still feels good to get the first details of the new series – even if it won’t feature Multiple Man, my favorite superhero.

All-New X-Factor #1 will debut in January with Carmine Di Giandomenico on art.

Such fancy suits!

The new premise is that Serval Industries, a search engine company (like Google), has decided to get into the superhero business. So they bought the name ‘X-Factor’ off Jamie Madrox and have put together their own superhero team. The cast will feature Polaris, Quicksilver and, surprisingly, Gambit, along with three other cast members that PAD and Marvel are keeping secret for now.

At least they all get spiffy new uniforms. Though why Quicksilver or Gambit would join some corporate superhero team instead of sticking with the Avengers or X-Men is beyond me. But I’m sure all will be explained once we start reading.

I’m very excited to see what PAD has in store for us and X-Factor.

In the same Comic-Con panel, PAD said the book will focus a lot on the relationship between Polaris and Quicksilver, and the fact that they are half-siblings. PAD also said that Gambit doesn’t trust Quicksilver at all, so that should create some necessary drama. He also gave a more in-depth interview with Comic Book Resources.

When asked about Madrox, PAD apparently said he had “no idea” what’s up with him. X-Men editor Nick Lowe told the fans that there are plans for the character. I can’t wait to see those too! Perhaps he’s read my blog and seen some of my suggestions.

6 Best and 6 Worst Child Superhero Halloween Costumes

It’s that time of year again! Kids, costumes, candy, scantily-clad women at parties I never get invited to; the works! I love Halloween. It might just be my favorite holiday. I love the pageantry of everybody willingly dressing up in costumes as if it were the normal course of business. I love kids going trick-or-treating. I love college students wearing full costumes to class. I love bringing a mask to work and wearing it to freak out receptionists. The whole holiday is just one big, festive free-for-all! And here at Henchman-4-Hire, I’ve developed a Halloween tradition of rating the best superhero Halloween costumes on the market. First I did the women, then the men, and this year it’s superhero costumes for kids!

Why couldn’t this have been my childhood?

There are tons of superhero costumes out there for kids these days, but a geek like me is very specific in what I’d be willing to put on my spawn (if I had any). Some professionally-made costumes actually have skill and effort put into them. They actually look like the superheroes they’re supposed to be. Other professionally-made costumes are a joke, slapped together to sell to unsuspecting parents and nothing more. In this day and age, accuracy counts!

So join me after the jump for the 6 best and the 6 worst superhero Halloween costumes for children!
