Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/11/16
Huh, what a week. After a few comic weeks full of great and wonderful comics, we’ve kind of landed on a thudder of a week. Some fine comics came out, some enjoyable, some not so much. I read a bunch and generally had a good time. But this was kind of an off week.
Aquaman and Wonder Woman got the Rebirth treatment, but neither issue wowed me in any way. Flash has started Rebirth as well, but for some reason, I still can’t bring myself to buy a Flash comic. It’s fascinating to me how few DC superheroes I’m actually invested in. Where’s Robin Rebirth? I guess Tim Drake’s revival in Detective Comics will have to do!
But it wasn’t all bad news this week! We’ve got the first issue of the Gotham Academy/Lumberjanes crossover! It’s not as amazing as I’d hoped, but it’s still a sign of hopefully great things to come! And it definitely picks up Comic Book of the Week!
Now we just need a Lumberjanes/Unbeatable Squirrel Girl crossover and I’ll be all set!
Comic Reviews: Aquaman Rebirth #1, Detective Comics #934, Kaijumax #2, Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy #1 and Wonder Woman Rebirth #1.
The World of Comics Just Got a Lot More Adorable
It’s the crossover I never knew I wanted, but now I can’t think of anything better. DC Comics and BOOM! Studios are going to work together to crossover Lumberjanes and Gotham Academy in a summer mini-series! Village Voice has the details on the creative team!
This is beyond cool. Like…I don’t even know how to describe how cool this is. An inter-company crossover? How does that even happen?! How does the universe allow such greatness to exist? I live in the universe, I know how horrible it can be.
We’re not supposed to have nice things!
But maybe, just maybe, the Lumberjanes and the students of Gotham Academy can team up and go on an adventure into our imaginations!
Starting in June.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/19/15
I tell ya, I honestly forgot how good it felt to have a real, fully working new video game to dive into. I never got around to buying a PS 4 or an X-Bone, and my PC has been out of date for a long time. I’ve spent the past year playing either old X-Box 360 games or PC games where I had to shrink the screen and lower the graphics to the bottom wrung to get even some movement out of them. But wowzers does it feel good to have a brand new, fully upgraded computer gaming machine!
My current list is Witcher 3, Dead Rising 3 and Divinity: Original Sin. Feels good!
As for comics, we’ve got some treats this week! New issues of Harley Quinn and Lumberjanes don’t fail to entertain, though I’m still not won over by the new Secret Six. Fortunately, the main Star Wars series is still pretty amazing, and wins Comic Book of the Week for its exciting, mythology-based story — and probably the coolest Chewbacca moment in years.
Someday, I expect to get a Chewbacca vs. Black Krrsantan battle out of these Marvel comics. If that doesn’t happen, then Disney buying Marvel was completely for naught! Naught, I say!
Comic Ratings: Harley Quinn #20, Lumberjanes #18, Secret Six #6 and Star Wars #9.

I don’t know why this happens, but it always seems like my favorite comics all come out in the same week. It’s a nightmare for the wallet but a celebration for reading! This week, we’ve got new issues of Ant-Man, Spider-Woman, Lumberjanes, Grayson, We Are Robin, Harley Quinn and more! It’s great!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Batgirl #43 for another nearly perfect issue. Batgirl is everything I could possibly want from a superhero comic these days, and the creative team pulls it off so effortlessly.
I hope DC keeps this team and this direction around for a long time to come.
Comic Reviews: Last Days of Ant-Man #1, Batgirl #43, Cyborg #2, Grayson #11, Harley Quinn #19, Justice League of America #3, Lumberjanes #17, Ninjak #6, Spider-Woman #10 and We Are Robin #3.
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/18/15
Ant-Man was awesome! I loved it! After all these years, I got to sit down in a theater and watch Ant-Man, and it lived up to all the glorious hype! Go see it! I’ll try to have my full review up later today.
As for comic books, we’ve got a great smattering of books this week. Comics like Kaijumax and Black Canary continue to impress, while Secret Six finally starts to feel like the old, beloved comic of yore. That’s a damn good thing. Lumberjanes and Harley Quinn continue their hot streaks, but there can be only one Comic Book of the Week.
Hawkeye #22 finally finishes off Matt Fraction’s now-legendary run!
That comic is all style, substance and so much more. I need to start buying those trades ASAP so I can sit down and re-read the whole thing over again.
Over at Word of the Nerd, I continue my Secret Wars coverage with a review of Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders #1. I was attracted to the comic because I’m a huge Faiza Hussain fan, but other than a spotlight for her awesomeness, the comic is middling at best — though if you’re a fan of Judge Dredd, it’s not to be missed.
Comic Reviews: Black Canary #2, Harley Quinn #18, Hawkeye #22, Kaijumax #4, Lumberjanes #16, Robin: Son of Batman #2, Secret Six #4 and Silver Surfer #13.
