The Top 6 Captain Marvels in Comics

The Captain Marvel movie is here! I’ve got my ticket and the plan is to show up at least an hour in advance to get one of the comfy reclining seats at my theater! It’s gonna be an awesome year in Marvel movies and Captain Marvel is gonna blast us off!

So how about a Captain Marvel themed List of Six to celebrate the occasion!

Those comfy seats are key

If you’re not too familiar with the long history of the superhero name “Captain Marvel”, it’s kind of insane. The first use of the name came in late 1939 with Fawcett Comics character Captain Marvel, who only settled on that name when the publisher couldn’t use “Captain Thunder”, and when they decided to shorten “Captain Marvelous”. That character was even more popular than Superman during World War II, but his popularity dried up after the war, and after DC Comics sued Fawcett because their Captain Marvel was clearly a rip-off of Superman.

When this Captain Marvel ceased publication, the recently christened Marvel Comics decided to seize the name and created their own, original Captain Marvel! And then DC eventually bought out Fawcett Comics and gained control of that first Captain Marvel. And then everybody sued everybody else for copyright infringement, which ended with Marvel retaining the rights to the name, but only if they kept publishing comics with that name…hence why I have been able to cobble together an entire List of Six of comic book characters named “Captain Marvel”!

The universe is grand.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/16/19

These are the best comic book weeks! Sometimes I’ll get a couple of comics on my Buy Pile to pick through, see what I like or don’t like. But weeks like this one was stuffed with my favorite comics! We’ve got Runaways, we’ve got Mr. & Mrs. X, we’ve got Go Go Power Rangers! It’s like I’m being spoiled!

We’ve also got G. Willow Wilson’s final issue of Ms. Marvel, a bittersweet but otherwise wonderful moment! I wanted to give it Comic Book of the Week to mark the occasion, but it had to go up against the first issue of Mark Russell’s Wonder Twins comic. I can now die a happy man for having read Wonder Twins #1.

That’s not to say Wilson’s final Ms. Marvel isn’t fun! Read that too!

Super Bowl Teases Avengers: Endgame and Captain Mavel

Thank the universe that we live in a world where all Super Bowl ads show up online almost immediately, so that I don’t have to watch the Super Bowl to get my fix of Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel teaser spots.

Both are pretty good!

Captain Marvel comes out at the beginning of March and Avengers: Endgame comes out at the end of April. I like how the Endgame trailers aren’t revealing too much about the plot. Everybody gets together, there are some dire warnings and concerns, but we have no clue yet what’s actually going to happen. I like that.

Also, I think I’ve asked this before, but is anybody seeing the Captain Marvel trailers in front of movies? I go to the movies a lot, especially superhero movies, but I haven’t seen the Captain Marvel trailers play in front of anything. Not Aquaman. Not Into the Spider-Verse. What is going on? Why is nobody playing that trailer?

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/12/19

Holy guacamole, it’s another big week for comics! Not only were there a bunch of my favorite titles already, like Squirrel Girl and Go Go Power Rangers, but there were also a couple of brand new comics I wanted to try out, like Captain Marvel and Young Justice! So be prepared for plenty of reviews!

Comic Book of the Week goes to the final issue of Iceman, where writer Sina Grace goes all out in his second grand finale!

We need more Iceman after this

Meanwhile, I continue to fail at catching up to Jason Aaron’s Thor comic. I have a digital stack just waiting for me to read, but I can’t seem to bring myself to do it. I want to get caught up on Thor! I really do! But I’ve also got random YouTube to watch…

Comic Reviews: Captain Marvel #1, Go Go Power Rangers #16, The Green Lantern #3, Iceman #5, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #40, Uncanny X-Men #9, X-23 #8 and Young Justice #1.

Nifty, Newish Captain Marvel Trailer!

A new Captain Marvel trailer hit the airwaves last night as part of some sports synergy thing. It’s not a full-on new trailer, but it’s packed full of new footage and some nifty new banter. Sounds like a good way to start a Tuesday to me.

Tickets are also now on sale if that’s your thing. I don’t normally buy movie tickets in advance because my local theater rarely sells out…but they do with Marvel movies these days. I had to watch Infinity War in the overflow theater. Not fun.

So perhaps I’ll buy my Marvel tickets early this year and get to the theater way ahead of everybody else, then claim the big, comfy, reclining theater seat that I want. Sounds like a plan! Captain Marvel comes out on March 8!
