Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/11/25

Let me tell you, folks, it has been a week. I live in the northeast and we were buried under several feet of snow last weekend, and all of it is still around. Throw in a couple of other little things that just burred their way under my saddle, and I have had it up to here with crappiness. But time stops for no person, so let’s talk new comics! I reviewed two brand new #1 issues this week.

Comic Book of the Week goes to New Champions #1 for a nicely crafted introductory issue that didn’t lose me at all, despite the brand new characters.

Secret identities ain’t what they used to be

Meanwhile, I continue to lose myself in Stardew Valley, which was the entire point, so that’s going well. Creature Commandos came to an end this week and it was an awesome show. Solid start for James Gunn’s DCU. And I can’t wait for next week’s finale to Skeleton Crew! That show has been a real hoot and a half!

TV Trailer Thursday!

There hasn’t been much to post about this week. I live in the northeast, so I’m buried in several feet of snow that just isn’t going anywhere. Life is misery. But a pair of random trailers showed up yesterday for some streaming TV shows I’m looking forward to, so I thought I’d bundle them up and share!

First up is the third season of Reacher, the Amazon Prime show where Jack Reacher beats people up for the greater good. Nothing much to spoil in this trailer; it’s just Reacher in a bunch of new situations.

And I’ll probably definitely watch! Or at least I’ll put it on my to-watch list and hopefully get to it eventually. The first two seasons are solid. I’m honestly surprised we’re only up to season 3 with Reacher. Wild.

Anyway, Reacher returns to Prime in February.

Next up is the fourth season of Mythic Quest on AppleTV+! Some spoilers in this trailer, mostly maybe?

I took forever to get around to watching this show, because I never had a reason to get AppleTV. But I’m fully caught up at this point because this show is awesome, and AppleTV is awesome! So many great shows. I’m currently watching the second season of Shrinking and it’s just as good as the first so far. So hopefully the fourth season of Mythic Quest can live up to the other seasons!

Mythic Quest returns to Apple on Jan. 29!

Enjoy the First Episode of Deep Space Discounts!

I wrote about this before and now the first episode is here: Deep Space Discounts, an original cartoon by YouTube artist DeepBlueInk! I’m a big fan of their work and I’m fully on board with watching and sharing this show. From my understanding, animators need all the help they can get combatting the YouTube algorithm.

I liked it! The first episode mostly sets up the characters and the setting, with plenty of good satire. So the show is off to a good start and I can’t wait for the next episode! I’ll share that too. They’ll be coming out weekly all this month. And you can support DeepBlueInk on Patreon to hopefully make more.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/4/25

Happy New Year, everyone! Here’s hoping 2025 isn’t as crappy as 2024, but I don’t have high hopes. We’re starting off a bit light this week with just a single comic read and reviewed. I read a few more, but this was the only one I felt like reviewing because it’s a good one!

Comic Book of the Week goes to Absolute Superman #3 for an unexpected, but no less delightful, take on a classic Superman trope.

Meanwhile, after many years, I finally, somewhat randomly started playing Stardew Valley. I’ve always considered the game, and when my brother mentioned in passing over Christmas that he was playing it again, I finally decided to give it a try. And, of course, it’s everything people say it is. The perfect chill accumulation game for a lazy weekend, just how I like it.

My 6 Favorite Things of 2024

Welp, the world keeps spinning and we’ve reached the end of another year. It was a crap year full of mostly crap entertainment, and I’m coming up empty in terms of empathy and interest. Following the presidential election, I’m opting to be more cynical these days as a coping mechanism. This was also the year I took a back seat on posting all the time. This was a year.

In good news, I finally started my own original comic — Cover Bard — and am halfway done with the first issue. I need to make a big post about it. And the second volume of Gamer Girl & Vixen is complete and headed to the printers, to be distributed and available for sale early next year. So those were some good things that happened. We also had a ton of great TV shows, but not a lot of great movies or video games. It was a weird year.

But I like putting together a list like this, so join me after the jump for my favorite bits and pieces of pop culture from 2024! And feel free to share your own in the comments below.
