Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/18/20

The fall of comics continues with the cancellation of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. There were also no new comics sent to stores this week, with most of the comic shops closed anyway. And more and more pro creators are being told to put down their pencils. But I’m not a professional (yet), so I’mma gonna see what I can find.

And it’s the first issue of Lost on Planet Earth, one of Comixology’s new original comics that debuted its first issue digitally this week! How nice!

Lost Planet Earth 02

That, there, is one interesting spaceship

Meanwhile, I just did a rewatch of the Watchmen TV show on HBO, and that was fun. I’m gonna start some of those free HBO shows next, like Barry. And I’m on the verge of beating Persona 5 the video game. So I’m keeping busy in self-quarantine. I hope the rest of you are doing well!

Still haven’t bought that Nintendo Switch though…

This Delightful Squirrel Girl Video!

Quarantine does strange things to us all. And perhaps it has convinced YouTuber Supernova Tova to cosplay as Squirrel Girl and sing the Squirrel Girl theme song from the first issue of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. If that’s the case, bring on more global pandemics!

I kid. But this video is delightful! The song is obviously set to the music of the classic Spider-Man theme song, with lyrics by Ryan North, writer of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. And Supernova Tova give sit her all! Which is exactly the sort of silly, quarantine-inspired comic book YouTubery I like. Standing ovation!

Just a Taste of Belle and Tina Are Time Travelers

Only Leigh continues to work on her original animated series Belle and Tina are Time Travelers, and delivered a quick little revisit the other day. Seeing as how she’s one of my favorite internet creators, I’m gonna share it with you all!

You can watch the first full episode here.

I love her stuff. I still need to subscribe to her Patreon, but then I also still need to start up a Patreon account. There are so many good creators out there I’d like to support.

But what is the Patreon tier for somehow collaborating on an animated Gamer Girl & Vixen short…

6 Superhero Vehicles That Are Knock-Offs of the Batmobile

Want to hear a funny story? So I’m trapped at home during this global pandemic, right? But I’m allowed to go out for groceries. So I did yesterday, made it all the way to the store and then my car wouldn’t start! Isn’t that hilarious? And then the shop I was able to take it to said they needed to keep it overnight, and as of my posting this listicle, I have yet to hear what the damage is going to be.

So let’s talk about Batmobiles.

Batmobile KO List 01

The best of multiple Batmobiles

More specifically, let’s talk about knock-offs of the Batmobile. I love the Batmobile. It’s my favorite of all fictional vehicles. And I could have done a list of my favorite Batmobiles, but there are too many to pick from. I could have done a list of other superhero vehicles, but that seems too generic. So how about a list of vehicles that are clearly just knock-offs of the Batmobile, whether intentionally, as part of an obvious parody or just because they tried to slip one by the readers. That should be fun! Join me after the jump!

SNL Brings In Ninja Turtle Parody Masters!

This past weekend, Saturday Night Live ran an animated segment about the Middle-Aged Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was pretty funny. I’m always up for a good TMNT parody.

If you’re like me, a person of refined and excellent taste, then you might notice something strikingly familiar about that segment: it was animated by the same studio that did those classic College Humor Ninja Turtles bits!

Lowbrow Studios has been putting out hilarious video game and pop culture parody videos for years, and their Ninja Turtle segments for College Humor back in the day were amazing!

It’s great to see them getting more renown! According to comments they made on YouTube, they were hired as a third party to do the SNL segment, which is why they weren’t more openly credited. But I can credit their good work all I want!

So spend your quarantine day going down the Lowbrow Studios YouTube rabbit hole and have a good day of it!
