Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/27/20
The coronavirus is getting worse here in America, but comics are still coming out! So let’s keep my mind occupied while I continue to hole up in this increasingly small apartment. Thankfully, I’ve got the likes of Batman and Thor to keep me company this week.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #50, a fun and exciting climax that lives up to all of the build-up. Lots of cool moments in this one.
Meanwhile, life continues on as normal. I still haven’t read Money Shot by Tim Seeley, but I promise I will. Tim, if you’re reading this, I promise to read your comic. I’ve been enjoying The Last of Us Part II. It’s a great game so far. I recently finished all of My Hero Academia. That was a trip! Very good anime. And the comic book industry is going through a bit #MeToo movement, which I fully support. Believe the victims. Ditch the perpetrators.
Comic Reviews: Batman #93, Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey #2, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #50 and Thor #5.

I say Cyberpunk 2077 can’t come soon enough because it keeps getting pushed back! The new release date is Nov. 19 — my brother’s birthday — and I’m just going to have to keep being patient. I cannot wait to play this game! It’s hopefully going to be the grand, open world RPG of my dreams!
Here’s a new trailer.
The folks at CD PROJEKT RED have started letting some game reviewers play some demos, and it’s sounding good. I’m liking what I’m hearing. I think I have a pretty good handle on what this game is going to be, and I definitely can’t wait!
To tide us over, CD PROJEKT RED has also started something called Night City Wire, which shows off even more game footage.
So at the very least, we’ve gotten some great looks at what Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be in November!

A Metric Ton of New Information on the Avengers Video Game
Crystal Dynamics held a big event yesterday for their upcoming Avengers video game, and they included a metric ton of videos and new information. We’ve now got our biggest and best looks yet at gameplay and story. It all looks pretty great!
Let’s start with a story trailer.
So it looks like the villain is going to be M.O.D.O.K. and he’s going to create an army of Super Adaptoid robots who will be empowered with Inhuman powers — the better to provide a ton of powerful robots to beat up. The story seems simple enough. It’s the rest of the game that’s apparently going to be really cool.
And here’s some additional pure gameplay footage of Thor.
So let’s see. It looks like there’s going to be a lot of battling super-powered robots, with some classic comic villains thrown in. I’ve seen Abomination in at least one of these trailers. And we know Taskmaster is in the game somewhere.
It looks like base building is going to be a part of the game, as we’ll need to “rebuild the helicarrier”. And we knew outfit and gear management was going to be a thing, allowing us to customize the look and loadout of our superheroes.
Here’s a longer video even. Some stuff might be repeated.
These videos definitely make me more excited about the game than I was before. It definitely does not appear to be as ‘on rails’ as I’ve been fearing. But I’m also not entirely sure this game is going to be much more than going out to a location and beating up a seemingly endless supply of faceless, nameless robots. But hell, maybe that will be awesome. I know I’ll probably really enjoy the costume/loadout aspect of the game, and the base building. The story looks like it’ll be pretty pure Marvel superheroics, so that’s fine.
And there’s plenty of room for expansion. They’ve already said they’re going to bring in new superheroes over time, like Ant-Man. And surely if this is an ongoing game that live updates over time, there will be other stories. Maybe season 2 will be Galactus or Skrulls or something.
Suffice to say, this is our best look yet at the game, and it looks bigger and better than anything we’ve seen about it before. I’m pretty satisfied with all of this.
The game is due out on Sept. 4…just in time for my birthday!

6 Forgotten LGBTQ+ Superheroes Who Still Have Potential
Happy Pride Month, everyone! I am a big supporter of LGBTQ+ fiction and wanted to make sure I did at least one List of Six this month to honor Pride. I’ve done my favorite queer couples in comics. I’ve done LGBTQ+ characters who should get their own movies. And this week, we’re going to explore queer comic book characters who have sadly disappeared into comic book limbo!
It happens to a lot of good comic book characters. Not everybody is going to be a Wolverine or a Batman right out of the gate. A writer comes along and creates a cool new superhero, but they don’t catch on and fade into obscurity when the writer moves along. It happens. Over the past decade or two, we’ve seen the major comic book companies try to introduce more LGBTQ+ characters…and then they fade away as well! That’s just how comics work sometimes.
So I’m here to pick some of these characters out of limbo, dust them off and present them as superheroese with potential going forward!
Read the rest of this entryHere’s a Bunch of Netflix Movie Trailers
Look, I’m off from work today, slept in a little bit and am generally feeling kind of lazy. It’s super hot and humid here in the northeast and sometimes a fella’s just got to make a lazy blog post. So here’s a bunch of Netflix trailers I’ve been sitting on for a lazy day!
First up is a brand new film that I just heard about, which prompted this lazy post. It’s Over the Moon! An animated film set to release in the fall.
Next up is Old Guard starring Charlize Theron as an ancient comic book badass, along with her whole crew. It comes out on July 10. If Netflix is snatching up any comic book it can find in these pandemic times, I’ve got something they might be interested in!
Lastly is Warrior Nun, which is actually a series, not a movie. It’s based on a manga, so similar to a comic! This comes out on July 2, so not very far off at all.
All of these look pretty good. Especially what with this being the Year Without Movies!
