Mimic is Alive and a Mutant!
I realize this new likely only matters to me and a select few Mimic fans in the world. But this is my blog, it’s a random Thursday, and even the barest mention of Mimic in an X-Men comic is an event. The dude is pretty rare. And he’s supposed to be dead!
But this week’s issue of House of X finally reveals how all of those previously dead mutants have come back to life in the big new relaunch. It involves a group of mutants combining their powers to basically super-clone the dead and essentially give them new life. It all makes sense in the context of the issue, which I’ll be including in my weekly comic reviews on Saturday.
The important part is that, in writer Jonathan Hickman’s prose materials, he name drops the Mimic as someone who can step in and take over for this group of mutants.

He also says that Mimic is a mutant. This isn’t historically the case. He was originally a normal human who developed his mimicry powers through a science experiment. Though there were times where some writers established that the experiment simply brought out his latest X-gene.
Honestly, I doubt Hickman has given much concern for whether or not Mimic is a human or a mutant. The important thing is that he has benefited from all these resurrections and he’s back among the living! That’s exciting news.
Unless all of this is some big feint and he goes back to being dead at the end of it…

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/14/19
We’ve got a big, fat stack of comics this week, and all of them were good or better! Sometimes I worry that I’m too positive in my comic reviews…but then I remember that I only really read comics I already enjoy. Perhaps I’m a fraud!
Nah, I don’t think that. I’m just a dude giving my thoughts on the comics I like! And hopefully you all enjoy reading. This week we’ve got some real zingers from the likes of Batman, Go Go Power Rangers, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and much more! Comic Book of the Week goes to the return of Wonder Twins for another perfect issue!
Name a more famous superhero catch phrase
Meanwhile, I am really liking Event Leviathan! It’s a whole mess of Bendis-speaking and not showing, but it involves some interesting characters, an interesting mystery, and some of the best cliffhangers I’ve seen in comics in a long time! It’s like comics forgot how to do a proper cliffhanger, and Bendis is schooling everybody with these twists and surprises!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/7/18
If you’re reading this, I’m probably on the road! Got a long drive today to a cousin’s wedding down in Maryland. Hopefully it’s neat! Then a long drive back home tomorrow. Fortunately, had some good comics this week to sustain my imagination,
We got two doses of FF this week, with both Fantastic Four and Future Foundation! The latter was less than stellar, while the former won Comic Book of the Week for it’s nifty premise!
It’s like 1961 all over again!
Meanwhile, the second issue of the Scream mini-series shows us that Scream could be her own self again, that she’s not just Carnage’s puppet. That gives me hope for her upcoming solo series. And while the new Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy mini-series has a fun first issue, it was too bland to dig into it with a proper review.
In other random news, I finally finished off Kurtis Wiebe’s run on Rat Queens. It’s a bit of a rushed ending, but still good stuff. It’s a great comic overall if you’re ever looking for something to read. Maybe I’ll do a larger article on Rat Queens one of these days…

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/31/19
Vacation! All I ever wanted! I’m on break from work for the next week and will be heading to a cousin’s wedding in Ocean City, Maryland next weekend. Anybody have any good memories of the place? I’ll still post throughout the week, though, because I’m mostly staying home for my week off. Should be great.
Plenty of good comics this week, from House of X to Power Rangers to the last regular issue in Jason Aaron’s now-legendary Thor run. But Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of Runaways for just a delightful issue about teenage crimefighting.
Costumes look great!
Meanwhile, Absolute Carnage is still a pretty cool comic. The second issue is more subdued than the first, but still a quality read. The tie-ins are OK so far. It’s fun seeing the Life Foundation symbiotes active again. Maybe we’ll get a new Hybrid out of this…

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/24/19
What a roller coaster week for comic book fans! In the same week that we lose Spider-Man in the MCU (for now), we also learn that we’re getting Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight and She-Hulk in the MCU! Honestly, I’m OK with that trade, though I’m confident Disney and Sony will return to the bargaining table. Spider-Man isn’t even part of Phase 4, so there’s plenty of time.
At least this week’s comics were pretty great! Batman, Jimmy Olsen, Iron Man, Valkyrie; all quality comics. But I’m going to give Comic Book of the Week to Powers of X #3 for a twist that gives this event a nice shot to the arm as we near the midway point.
And just for an instant, Xorn is cool
Meanwhile, I may give up on Guardians of the Galaxy for now. I’ve always been lukewarm about this comic. It’s fine and enjoyable, and clearly well written, but it hasn’t really been doing anything for me, personally. The latest issue is mostly a recap of Rocket Raccoon’s origins, coupled with what turns out to be a really lame reason why everybody hates Rocket. Maybe I’ll keep trying going forward, but based on solicitations for November, Beta Ray Bill might be moving on to a new Annihilation story anyway.
Of course, that comic is written by Matthew Rosenberg, killer of superheroes, so maybe Bill’s inclusion is a bad sign.
