Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/7/19
How cool was that new Black Widow trailer this past week? We’re on the verge of entering a new round of superhero movies! I can’t wait! Thankfully, plenty of good comics to read until then, including Batman, various X-Men and Lois Lane!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Green Lantern: Blackstars for an utterly hilarious takedown of DC Comics. Grant Morrison is creatively savage.
Meanwhile, even though I gave up reviewing Magnificent Ms. Marvel, I’m still reading the comic. And I’m pleased to report that — SPOILERS — that stupid new costume of hers has turned out to be evil. Thank the stars!
Comic Reviews: Batman #84, Doctor Doom #3, Excalibur #3, Green Lantern: Blackstars #2, Lois Lane #6, Marauders #3 and X-Men #3.
A Peek at What I Actually Want to See in Dawn of X
Dawn of X is in full swing and I’m mostly lukewarm about the whole thing so far. Most of the comics are fine, but I don’t feel like any of them are really exploring the full depth and breadth of the new Krakoa-based status quo. Two different comics star a character that used to be part of Psylocke. A majority of the comics are about a team of mutants who leave the island immediately. Almost all of them have gone back to X-business as usual, in my opinion.
I want to learn about life on Krakoa. I want stories that actually deal with the new status quo and how it has changed these characters. And in this week’s issue of Excalibur, we got just a taste of the sort of thing I want to see in Dawn of X.
Behold, a mutant message board!

I don’t think mutantsunmuted.com is a real site
Look at all of that brilliant material! Putting together a Krakoan soccer team? Serious questions about childcare on this strange mutant party island? Concerns about phone chargers and tampons? Mutants actually trying to live up to the “Make More Mutants” commandment with a 21st century dating sentimentality?
I find this stuff fascinating. Am I alone? I want to see more day-in-the-life stuff on Krakoa. What are the living arrangements really like? Is there internet? What about mutants who were pretty comfortable living in the real world, are they super cool about uprooting those lives and living in some pod condo on this island? Have they all had to give up junk food in favor of an all-natural Krakoan diet? How do they get tampons?!
Is there a police force? Are there schools? A library? Has anybody started up a newsletter? Is there a dress code for what X-Men uniforms you can/should wear? Is somebody providing these uniforms?
I am in no position to make demands of Marvel Comics, but can we get an anthology series about life on Krakoa?

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/30/19
What a week for comics! We’ve got three Dawn of X comics this week, but none of them earn the top spot from me. Honestly, I haven’t been all that excited about Dawn of X so far. None of my favorite X-Men are involved and none of the comics are taking full advantage of the new status quo, at least how I saw it. I’m going to start dropping titles soon enough…
Comic Book of the Week was a close call between Power Rangers and Valkyrie, but I think I’ll give it to Jane Foster for some truly awesome moments this issue. Power Rangers has won it enough, let’s get some new blood here.
Meanwhile, would anybody be interested in my favorite comics of the past decade? Everybody on the internet is doing decade retrospectives, but I can barely remember what I liked last month, let alone a decade ago! But I’ve been looking back and remembering some of my favorite comics of the past 10 years and thought I might do that article. Let me know if you’d be interested in the comments!
Comic Reviews: Fallen Angels #2, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #45, New Mutants #2, Scream: Curse of Carnage #1, Valkyrie #5 and X-Force #2.
Strong Guy Watch: He’s on Krakoa!
Good news, everybody! Strong Guy has finally been spotted on Krakoa as part of Dawn of X! Every X-Person ever, hero and villain, has supposedly been resurrected on Krakoa, but some of my favorite characters have been missing since the big relaunch.
But Strong Guy shows up in a big group shot from this week’s X-Force #2! He’s also, apparently, gone back to his 90s costume. Probably because of the upcoming action figure.
I’m glad to see he’s no longer dead. Vive le Strong Guy!
Also in this picture is our first confirmation that the Blob is also on Krakoa. He wasn’t in the big villain arrival scene during House of X, so I was holding out hope that Marvel was planning something special for Blob in the wake of Leah Williams’ excellent take on the character during the Age of X-Man.
This appearance doesn’t negate potential plans for Marvel and Williams, so I’m going to hold onto hope that something excellent might happen.
Now to sit back and wait for Multiple Man and Mimic to finally appear…

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/23/19
Happy Pre-Thanksgiving, everybody! By this time next week, I will have enjoyed a nice, big meal with my loving family and all will be well with the world. Hopefully. All was mostly well with comics this week, with the likes of Batman, Iron Man, Thor and the X-Men!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Gwenpool Strikes Back because the issue finally embraces just how insane it can really get with this character.
Meanwhile, Absolute Carnage came to a solid ending, though the issue is mostly all fight scene and probably would be better read via trades. It also ends with such an obvious cliffhanger that we probably should have all seen it coming. Ah well, still an OK event all around, even if it doesn’t live up to my memories of Maximum Carnage.
Comic Reviews: Batman #83, Excalibur #2, Gwenpool Strikes Back #4, King Thor #3, Marauders #2 and Tony Stark – Iron Man #18.
