Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/21/19

Holy moly, people! Because Christmas falls on a Wednesday next week, every single comic company is dumping ALL OF THEIR COMICS this week! We’ve got nearly half a dozen Dawn of X comics, along with the likes of Powers Rangers, Runaways, Legion of Super-Heroes and, to top it all off, the finale to Tom King’s Batman saga and the mid-season finale to Dan Slott’s Iron Man! There’s so many comics!

Comic Book of the Week goes to the final issue of King Thor! Jason Aaron finishes his legendary run with a truly masterful goodbye that’s both exciting and heartfelt. And Thor: God Cop.

You know you’d read it

Meanwhile, in non-comic book but otherwise important news, I enjoyed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. I’ll have my full review and thoughts on Wednesday, but for right now, I liked the movie. Or more precisely, I liked the grand finale with all its crazy big action and solid character moments. It seems I’m a sucker for good, quality Star Wars fan service.

Comic Reviews: Batman #85, Gwenpool Strikes Back #5, King Thor #4, Legion of Superh-Heroes #2, Marauders #4, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #46, New Mutants #4, Runaways #28, Scream: Curse of Carnage #2, Spider-Man #3, and Tony Stark – Iron Man #19.

Spider-Woman is Getting a Hip New Costume, Again!

Once upon a time in 2014, Marvel announced that classic comic book character Spider-Woman was getting a hip, new costume redesign. I’d never been much of a Spider-Woman fan, but I loved the redesign and decided to write about it for this humble blog.

Little did I know that the ensuing Spider-Woman comic would not only become one of my favorite comics of the decade (full list coming next week!), but that this humble blog would get quoted on the cover! I loved that Spider-Woman comic!

So my hopes are getting even higher now that Marvel has revealed yet another hip, new costume redesign for the upcoming Spider-Woman comic!

Spider Woman Costume Redesign 06

I like it, though not as much as the previous redesign.

It’s sleek and cool, and very modern. But I’m torn about the red webbing design on her shoulders.

Spider Woman Costume Redesign 05

That’s very clearly a Spider-Man costume thing, and Spider-Woman has never been beholden to Spider-Man when it comes to costumes. She has her own iconic look and color scheme. It’s especially troublesome because a black bodysuit with the webbing design on the shoulders is Miles Morales’ look.

Nitpicks aside, I think it’s a strong look overall, and I’m definitely looking forward to her new series even more now! Here’s hoping Roger is still part of her story!

6 Things I Want to See in the Into the Spider-Verse Sequel

It was excitingly inevitable that we would get a sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I really do think the animated feature is my favorite of all the many Spider-Man movies. It was just a brilliant use of the character, exploring the meaning of being a hero with verve, wit, flashy animation and pretty much perfect everything.

Only two years away!

So what can we expect to see in a sequel to something so expansive and creative as Into the Spider-Verse? There are some obvious answers, especially considering that tease at the end of the movie. And obviously we’ll probably see all of the main characters back for another go around. But surely with the Spider-Verse foundation built, we’re going to go bigger and wilder when the movie arrives in 2022.

Join me after the jump for some ideas and characters I’d like to see in the big, hopefully bombastic sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/26/19

What a weekend to be alive! Not only do we have some good comics this week, but I also just picked up the The Outer Worlds video game. I’m having a ton of fun with it so far! Not only that, but we’ve also finally got new episodes of BoJack Horseman to watch! I’m over the moon this weekend!

Comic book wise, Dawn of X brings us the first issue of the Marauders, which is as fun as the rest of the relaunch has been. The Amazing Mary Jane has also arrived, and it’s fine. Comic Book of the Week goes to another stellar issue of Tony Stark – Iron Man, which might not make headlines but is still one of the best comics on the stands.

With dry, cool wit like that…

Meanwhile, Absolute Carnage continues to be a fun series. I read the latest issue last week, and it’s good, though I think it’s a little too limited in scope. It seems like a pretty self-contained story. The Scream tie-in mini also came to a pretty dull ending, but I’m going to remain generally hopeful for her upcoming ongoing series. Surely it exists for a reason, right?

Comic Reviews: Amazing Mary Jane #1, King Thor #2, Marauders #1, Tony Stark – Iron Man #17 and Valkyrie #4.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/19/19

It’s gonna be a short list of reviews this week, henchies, because your buddy is on vacation! And I dunno, I didn’t feel like reading a whole stack of comics, like usual. But I did read a couple, and they were some real dingers.

Look at this list: three comics that pretty much define the entire comic book industry. Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men. No fancy adjectives. No major crossovers. Just simple comics. One is OK, one is terrible and the third, X-Men #1, is pretty darn good. I am still excited for Dawn of X! It gets Comic Book of the Week.

The state of X-Men comics at the tail end of 2019

Meanwhile, when I didn’t read the stack of newly released comics, I have been spending my time catching up on larger collections. I read the latest volume of Empowered, and it was a real barn burner! Is anybody else reading Empowered? I want to do a feature post on it someday. And I read through all of Paper Girls now that it’s complete. Really fun story. Also highly recommended.

Comic Reviews: Batman #81, Spider-Man #2 and X-Men #1.
