Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/2/18

Despite being a Fifth Wednesday, this was actually a pretty big week in comics! The first full issue of Brian Michael Bendis’ Superman came out, and I enjoyed it! Granted, I’ve liked Superman comics in the past and dropped them, so who knows if I’ll stick with it — but I’m going to try!

Comic Book of the Week goes to another landmark issue: Amazing Spider-Man #800! It’s the grand finale of Dan Slott’s decade on Amazing Spider-Man, and the issue lives up to the pomp and circumstance…though it’s not without its flaws.

Dialogue occasionally being one of them

In potentially disappointing news, I’ve decided to give up on Doomsday Clock. I just don’t like the comic, and the new issue this week reinforced everything I don’t like. And I don’t want to use this comic review segment to trash on comics just because I don’t like them. I find Doomsday Clock to be boring, with an undeserved pretentiousness. I might keep reading, just to see where it goes. But starting now, no more active reviews.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #800, Justice League: No Justice #4, Man of Steel #1 and Ms. Marvel #30.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/23/18

Would anybody prefer if I got these reviews out on Thursdays instead of Saturdays? I was thinking about optics the other day and realized that, much like my movie reviews, my comic reviews come out pretty late, too. That probably reduces the amount of traffic I could be getting. But then I don’t really worry about traffic to this blog. I’m not getting rich on this thing. And I go with Saturdays because it gives me time to still do my day job.

It would be a bit more work to rush out the reviews on Thursday, but maybe people would prefer that. Let me know in the comments. If you’re cool with Saturdays, let me know that too!

This week is all DC Comics! None of my regular Marvel comics came out this week, and as much as I’d like to review the new Darkhawk mini, I’m staying far away from Marvel’s latest Big Event Infinity War off-shoot. But DC does not disappoint, for the most part, with new issues of Batgirl, Justice League: No Justice, Silencer, Terrifics, and the finale of James Tynion’s Detective Comics! Which wins Comic Book of the Week!

Hopefully Cassandra Cain fans are happy

Now I need to decide if I’m going to keep reading Detective Comics after he leaves. I also keep wanting to read more about Jessica Cruz, but never really got into any of her comic appearances. Anybody have any good recommendations on where to start?

Comic Reviews: Batgirl #23, Detective Comics #981, Justice League: No Justice #3, The Silencer #5 and The Terrifics #4.

6 Thoughts on Deadpool 2

Honestly, I don’t care if X-Men: Dark Phoenix ever comes out. The main X-Men franchise is dead to me, and there’s no point in beating that horse corpse. The new Deadpool franchise is where it’s at! Humor, action and a far more fun and energetic use of classic comic book characters, Deadpool should be the future of this franchise — at least until Marvel does a full reboot to bring the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Deadpool2 List 01

Movie Rating: 9/10 – Great.

Until that happens, I would rather FOX keep producing entertaining off-shoot movies like Deadpool 2! I found this movie to be just as funny, wacky and raunchy as the first, with plenty of heart and soul added to make it an even better film. The last thing I want to do is slog through another movie of James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence phoning it in. Ryan Reynolds is the hilarity we need!

Join me after the jump for my thoughts and review on Deadpool 2! Expect FULL SPOILERS for the movie and its aftermath!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/19/18

Anybody else see Deadpool 2 this weekend? That was a fun movie! Anybody want to take bets until Firefist shows up in comics? I’d say it’s about as inevitable as Negasonic Teenage Warhead getting the movie makeover after the last Deadpool movie…

Speaking of comics, we had some fine ones this week! Power Rangers continues their big Shattered Grid event. The final issue of All-New Wolverine drops a nice little finale. And the Avengers and Justice League face off to win my favor…and Comic Book of the Week goes to the second issue of Justice League: No Justice!

Somewhere you obviously weren’t invited

Meanwhile, I’ve decided to drop X-Men Red. It’s not what I thought it would be and, despite my being a big fan of writer Tom Taylor, I’m just not really digging it. I’d rather drop books I’m not enjoying than keep giving them crummy reviews. This week’s issue was fine, but just no what I’m looking for in an X-Men comic these days.

Also new this week, I’ve decided to start listing more creatives in the credits section of my reviews. A letterer friend of mine pointed out that reviewers should credit everybody, and he’s right. The only reason I wasn’t was because I’m lazy. So from now on, inkers, colorists and letterers!

Comic Reviews: All-New Wolverine #35, Avengers #2, Batman #47, Justice League: No Justice #2 and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #27.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/12/18

Just one week until Deadpool 2 comes out! If only I was reading Deadpool comics and could link these reviews and that movie in some way. I guess I’ve just got to wait until Marvel makes that Squirrel Girl movie.

Lots of good comics this week, I enjoyed almost everything. I still think Exiles is terrible, but Domino, Runaways, Squirrel Girl and Detective Comics are still a blast! And Comic Book of the Week goes to the kick-off issue of the Justice League: No Justice storyline. It’s big and fun!

Meanwhile, if you live in the Rochester, NY area, I’ll be at the Flower City Comic-Con promoting Gamer Girl & Vixen next month! Mark your calendars!

Comic Reviews: Detective Comics #980, Domino #2, Exiles #3, Justice League: No Justice #1, Runaways #9 and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #32.
