Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/28/18
In fun Sean news, I cashed in some credit card rewards points the other day and splurged on an Amazon comic book shopping spree! I’ve got a whole pile of awesome graphic novels coming my way, as well as the Gwenpool action figure. Because I have a problem.
Meanwhile, we’ve got some pretty fun comics this week, including Bendis’ proper start on Action Comics, which I enjoyed more than Superman, and new issues for both Multiple Man and X-23, one of which I like a lot more than the other, and the answer may surprise me! Comic Book of the Week goes to the first issue of Mr. & Mrs. X because Kelly Thompson finally gave us a comic book wedding we could actually enjoy.
Elsewhere, I am not going to read any of Marvel’s Infinity Wars stuff that’s coming out, no matter how much I like Darkhawk and Richard Ryder as Nova. So whatever shocking things are happening in that stuff is beyond me. I got tricked into reading Civil War II. Never again!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/30/18
The week we’ve all been waiting for is here! The first issue of Multiple Man has hit the stands and is in my hands! Longtime readers of this blog will know that Multiple Man is my all-time favorite comic book character. So I am very excited that he’s back in print after being in limbo/dead for years now.
And no, August solicitation for Multiple Man #4, I don’t just tell people he’s my favorite to seem cool. Stop gatekeeping your own comic book.
Unfortunately, Multiple Man #1 is not Comic Book of the Week. It was an OK issue, as you’ll read in a bit. The real standout this week was the 50th issue of Ms. Marvel!
Meanwhile, anybody else excited for Ant-Man and the Wasp next weekend? Woohoo!
Comic Reviews: Man of Steel #5, Ms. Marvel #31, Multiple Man #1, The Silencer #6, Thor #2 and The Terrifics #5.
Strong Guy Watch: Strong Guy and Multiple Man, Together Again!
The first issue of the new Multiple Man mini-series arrived today, and my hopes and dreams were answered when Strong Guy made an appearance. It helps that Matt Rosenberg is writing both Multiple Man and New Mutants, of course.
For those who don’t know, Strong Guy and Multiple Man are best pal!
Though you wouldn’t be able to tell from this comic. Despite being features somewhat prominently as a supporting character in this issue, I don’t think Jamie and Guido say more than two words to each other. Guido never even expresses any real excitement that his best pal is back from the dead.
That’s kind of a downer for a super-fan like me, but after reading the issue, I need to learn to chill out and just let this story be told. Hopefully Strong Guy stays in the mini-series.

So They’re Probably Going to Kill Strong Guy
I don’t know this for a fact, but it’s the only conclusion to draw from the latest comic book solicitations: Marvel is going to kill Strong Guy in the June issue of New Mutants.
That’s the cover. Here’s the solicitation blurb:
- FUNERAL FOR A NEW MUTANT!
- Following the tragic events of last issue, THE NEW MUTANTS come together to bury one of their own.
- Can the team put aside their differences long enough to avenge their fallen teammate, or will this loss tear them apart?
- Featuring guest appearances by all your favorite X-MEN characters as they come to say goodbye… Or do they?
So somebody is going to die in an upcoming issue of New Mutants. There are only five members on the team: Strong Guy, Magik, Boom Boom, Rictor and Wolfsbane. Theoretically, any of them could die, but let’s look at the evidence.
On the cover, the skeletons of all the characters are in action poses — except for Strong Guy, who appears to be falling backwards. That’s a pretty big clue.
The second and most important factor is that I like Strong Guy, so of course he’s going to be the one to die. Remember, June is the month when the new Multiple Man comic is going to debut. I’m super excited about that.
But of course, in the same month where Multiple Man returns, his best friend, Strong Guy, has to die. That’s how the universe balances my comic fandom. I’m not allowed to have nice things. Even when the same writer is writing both the Multiple Man comic and New Mutants, and could bring together their reunion. That’s not going to happen.
Within a week of revealing Multiple Man was coming back from the dead, Marvel killed Phil Urich.
I am not allowed to have nice things in comics!

Good News, Everybody! New Multiple Man Comic!
We all kind of hoped it was inevitable, and the big reveal is here: Multiple Man is coming back with his own solo comic book series! Multiple Man #1 will debut in July, the first of five issues. It will be written by Matthew Rosenberg (who is also using Strong Guy and Wolfsbane in New Mutants), with art by Andy MacDonald.
Welp, I’m thrilled! This is exactly what I want! I’m not too familiar with Rosenberg’s work, or MacDonald’s, for that matter, but this interview with ComicBook.com paints Rosenberg as a pretty awesome fellow.
“If I were smarter I’d probably say some nonsense about how this was all about the duality of man and the Jungian archetypes that exist within us, how they are often oppositional, and how the ideas of who we are existed before us and continue beyond us. Maybe the book is about what we leave behind in the world for the people who love us and the people who don’t, and how that story is never a complete picture. But, honestly, I just like Jamie Madrox a lot and I raised my hand in a meeting at the Marvel office and said, ‘What if he wasn’t dead?’ and then they asked me to make up how that would work. And so… here we are. Dude’s not dead.”
Sounds good to me!
Some basics about the book: Jamie Madrox isn’t dead yet from the Terrigen Mists, and why he’s not dead is going to drive some of the book. Rosenberg isn’t going to use Layla Miller, at least not right away, but he is going to use Jamie’s friends from Rosenberg’s New Mutants comic. So a bit of boo with all the yay, but I can live with that as long as we get proper Multiple Man back!
This is thrilling news!
