6 Thoughts on Black Panther

Marvel does it again! And perhaps better than ever! I loved Black Panther, unconditionally. I’ve been super excited about this film and it delivered everything I could have hoped for. Sometimes I’ll have some quiet reservations about a Marvel movie, but not this time. Black Panther is superb! One of Marvel’s absolute best!

Black Panther Review 01

Movie Rating: 10/10 – Fantastic.

I feel a little sorry for anybody decrying superhero fatigue. As a lifelong comic book fan, especially Marvel Comics, I have been living childhood dreams for more than a decade now. We’re 10 years deep into Marvel churning out superhero movies and they are still making films as amazing as Black Panther. Somebody pinch me!

Join me after the jump for my thoughts and a review of Black Panther. There will be FULL SPOILERS for the film. Please feel free to share your own thoughts in the comments!

Another Action Figure to Add to My Buy Pile

Toy Fair is here and we’ve got a look at upcoming Marvel Legends action figures! There’s a bunch that look pretty great, including a cool Astonishing Ant-Man/Stinger two-pack that I’ll definitely get. But I’m here to talk about one figure specifically: Scream, the female symbiote.

Scream Action Figure 01

Maybe she’ll be in the Venom movie!

Of all the wild and crazy symbiotes out there in comic book land, I think Scream is my favorite. First of all, she’s got a cool look. And she was only the third ever symbiote, so she was around before Marvel went too wild with symbiotes. Also, in the 90s, there was a slight attempt made to make Scream more of a good guy, which I always enjoy. So yeah, I’m excited for a quality Scream action figure!

This also explains why we were getting a Lasher figure, announced before.

Also, one more fun Scream story! I went to Universal Studios in Orlando this past December and they have a big Marvel superheroes adventure land. It was awesome. There was a Spider-Man 3D ride, which was essentially a short Spider-Man adventure video where he battles his bad guys, with the ride car jostling and shaking to fit the video. There’s a bunch of classic bad guys in the video, but out of all the symbiotes they could have put in, they used Scream. Not Venom or Carnage, Scream. For this theme park ride. Weird choice.

Anyway, I was hoping that at least some of the many souvenir shops at the park might have merchandise based on the ride — but nope! They had a bunch of Venom and Carnage stuff, but no memorabilia based on the actual ride they had. So nothing about Scream! I was disappointed.

Until now!

The 2018 Action Figure Buy List: Scream, Lasher, Multiple Man, Prowler, Astonishing Ant-Man, Songbird and Spider-Woman.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/17/18

Oh man, Black Panther was an awesome movie! I loved it! So good! If only I was reading Black Panther comics and could review them this week! Does anybody have any opinions on the current Black Panther run by Ta-Nehisi Coates? I gave up pretty early on it, but I’ve heard it gets better in the long run, so I’m considering picking up the TPBs.

Fortunately, we’ve got some good comics here, like DetectiveComics with major developments and a hilarious Unbeatable Squirrel Girl! Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of Ms. Marvel for an amazing issue that finally make sense of the current storyline.

Mike Knows 01

Darnit, Mike!

Who knew the storyline that purposefully does not include Ms. Marvel would turn out so good? I had my doubts, but here we are!

Comic Review: Detective Comics #974, Marvel Two-in-One #3, Ms. Marvel #27, Sideways #1 and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #29.

Strong Guy Watch: Through the Looking Glass

Once upon a time, I noticed an odd trend in the pages of Inhumans vs. X-Men, wherein the superhero Strong Guy seemed randomly added to background scenes. As a fourth-tier, supporting X-Men character, Strong Guy has never really mattered much in the larger X-Men scheme of things. He was barely ever acknowledged outside of his home book of X-Factor.

Strong Guy Watch Jean 01

Can’t resurrect your Jean Greys without Strong Guy

But ever since Death of X, Strong Guy has been popping up as a member of the larger X-Men cast. And I found this rather weird. Out of all mutant characters, why was Strong Guy all of a sudden getting background supporting character slots? He was never a member of the X-Men before this, but now he’s clearly involved? Even if only in the background?

At first, my theory was that some editor passed a decree to start adding Strong Guy to X-Men scenes. I don’t know why or how, it just seemed like it had to have been a legitimate plan. There’s no way it was random coincidence. I started the Strong Guy Watch to keep track. But I backed off once it became clear that Strong Guy was definitely a member of the larger X-Men cast, as shown from his recent appearances in Phoenix Resurrection. The dude clearly belonged.

But a new Strong Guy appearance this week has reopened my original theory! What the heck is going on with Strong Guy that he would appear in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl?!

Strong Guy Watch Squirrel 01

Beardless!

We’re through the looking glass here people.

In the panel in question, Strong Guy is among a wide variety of colorful characters summoned by Loki to help Squirrel Girl fight the Silver Surfer (it’s complicated, I know, but read the issue, because it’s great). The collected characters are immediately dispatched and sent back where they came from. So it was, at most, a two-page gag where artist Erica Henderson got to draw a bunch of wacky Marvel characters. They included Sleepwalker, for crying out loud!

But why use Strong Guy?

Out of all the characters that could have been chosen, why Strong Guy? Yes, he looks weird, and would therefore be perfect for the comic and Henderson’s art style. But she could have picked anybody. Was it even her choice? Did writer Ryan North tell her to include Strong Guy?

Or does my original theory hold: Was there some sort of editorial decision recently that Strong Guy would be used a lot more in the background of comics?!

It’s a mystery I will stay with all night, if I have to! But I will also take no steps to legitimately solve it. Just letting it simmer in my brain is good enough for me!

Black Panther is Coming!

We’re only 2 days away from the Black Panther premiere and I couldn’t be more excited! That same impatience I get immediately before every Marvel movie is here. But somehow I’ll pull through and make it to the movie!

To help with the wait, HalloweenCostumes.com has put together another big superhero costume collage! Click to enlarge!

I’ll have my review/thoughts on the movie next week!
