Forgotten Characters: Gauntlet and Southpaw
Whatever happened to Gauntlet and Southpaw?
One is a surly, loud-mouthed superhero drill instructor. The other is a rebellious teenage rapscallion. Both are wielders of gigantic, alien fists – but only on one hand each. And together, Gauntlet and Southpaw are one of the most clever ideas comic writer Dan Slott ever came up with.
But where the heck have they been hiding?
Dan Slott has had a very busy career writing for Marvel Comics, tackling everyone from She-Hulk to the Great Lakes Avengers. Now he’s the head Spider-Man writer, and has been guiding Marvel’s flagship character for years. So with this kind of prominence, how could two of his most interesting characters have disappeared? You’d think the guy would have enough pull to get them added to the Mighty Avengers or the New Warriors or something, right?
The mysteries of Gauntlet and Southpaw need to be revealed! Join me after the jump to learn a bit more.
Forgotten Characters: Miri Riam
Whatever happened to Star Sapphire Miri Riam?
How could DC comics create someone so utterly adorable and then drop her like a hot potato? Miri Riam was one of the funnest new characters to come out of the Green Lantern series in the past few years, a character with a lot of layers and a lot of potential to be a cool character. But after going to all the trouble to introduce her and build her up, DC hasn’t done squat with this manic pixie dream girl in the DCnU reboot. Why the heck not?
There are a lot of multi-colored Lanterns these days. Green Lanterns, Blue Lanterns, Red Lanterns, Orange Lanterns, and there have been a ton of new characters introduced alongside these different colors. Miri Riam was one of my favorites, but for some reason, DC doesn’t want to use her anymore, despite at least one series dedicated entirely to showcasing the various colored Lanterns. So where is Miri Riam? Why isn’t she filling our hearts with love anymore?
Forgotten Characters: Lacuna
Whatever happened to Lacuna, the mutant talk show host and would-be member of X-Statix?
The green blob Doop has been given new prominence in the popular pages of Wolverine & The X-Men, but he wasn’t the only character to survive the massacre that was Peter Milligan’s X-Statix. I want to know whatever happened to my personal favorite character from that series, the beautiful, the excitable, the orange Lacuna! X-Statix may have been controversial in its day, but the rose-colored glasses of hindsight have proven just how ahead of its time that series really was.
X-Statix was a comic that satirized Jersey Shore several years before Jersey Show was even on the air. X-Statix was making Kim Kardashian jokes before ‘Kardashian’ was even a thing. And there in the wings, doing her part to mock talk show hosts, was Woodstock Schumaker, the sometimes superhero known as Lacuna. She was one of the few characters to survive the end of X-Statix, but she hasn’t been seen since. I want to know why not!
Here is a young female character ripe for use in any number of rebooted X-teams. She’s got an awesome look, nifty powers and her own talk show! At the very least, why hasn’t anybody had Lacuna and the Stars playing in the background of any scenes?

Forgotten Characters: The Wonder Twins
Whatever happened to the Wonder Twins?
Wait, do I really mean those annoying, creepy, purple-clad twins from the old Super Friends cartoon? The ones with the monkey? Hells yeah I mean the Wonder Twins! I’m a huge Wonder Twins fan!
Though to be completely honest, I’m more in love with the idea of the Wonder Twins as opposed to their actual appearance in Super Friends. On the cartoon, they were just a couple of dinguses. And there was that stupid monkey.
I’m far more interested in their comic book counterparts, and the general idea of the twin alien superhero concept. Why haven’t these two appeared yet in the New 52?
Forgotten Characters: Rhapsody
Whatever happened to Rhapsody?
No, seriously, how is it that this total babe of a mutant has only ever appeared in one comic book story nearly 20 years ago? She was a villain/love interest for my favorite comic book character, Multiple Man, in one of the earliest comic books I ever owned: X-Factor #79. The comic was written by Peter David, who is once again currently writing a new X-Factor series, starring Multiple Man.
So I want to know why Peter David hasn’t brought her back for a cameo or a reappearance or anything? Marvel Comics went to the trouble of making sure that Rhapsody did not lose her mutant powers on M-Day, but why bother if they weren’t going to use her again someday? She’s hot, she’s blue and she’s crazy. She’s everything that comic book fans are looking for!
