Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/14/18

This is a very interesting week for comics! Marvel kicks off two new titles — Exiles and Domino — and follows those up with possibly the best issue of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl to date. At least one of those new comics might become a regular purchase for me, and Squirrel Girl will hopefully be around until the end of time.

Comic Book of the Week easily goes to Unbeatable Squirrel Girl for a single issue story of friendship, heroics, weird time malfunctions and more heart than ten comics!

Bullseye’s one weakness: banana shenanigans

In other news, I’m really enjoyable Gwenpool so far. I’ve got to order the last couple of trade paperbacks to finish it off. Gwenpool, the comic, is definitely far more than it would seem on the surface.

It’s More Than Half Cafe Scene and In-Jokes

OK, so, here’s the thing: I like the How It Should Have Ended cartoons. It’s an awesome premise, they’re usually hilarious and the animation and voice-acting are superb. It’s some of the best stuff on YouTube.

But they are really, really in love with themselves and their in-jokes. I have to imagine the fans love all the times they cut to Batman and Superman hanging out in a cafe, or the Villains Pub stuff. And if that’s where the money is, fine. I can’t blame anyone for that. But I’m here for the comedic alternate endings to popular movies…

I think this Justice League episode gets a little meta, but I’m not sure. Parts of it are funny. But then it cuts away from quality parody to an extended cafe bit. And then ends with an extended Villains Pub bit.

I’m just sayin’, guys! I’m just sayin’!

I Love the Idea of Kristen Wiig as the Cheetah

This is some pretty old news, but I’m going to post it anyway. Kristen Wiig has been cast as the villainous Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2. I think that’s a fantastic casting choice!

Wiig Cheetah 01

I really like Kristen Wiig, even though I never watched any of her seasons of Saturday Night Live. There’s just something understated about her comedy and her acting chops, like she’s obviously funny, but there’s an undercurrent of melancholy. And I think that will go great with the Cheetah! I don’t know much about the villain, but Greg Rucka’s recent Wonder Woman comic focused heavily on the character and Wiig definitely fits! Barbara Ann Minerva was an academic first, mystical super-villain second, and I think that’s a good fit for Wiig.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/7/18

We’ve got something of a light week this week, though a lot of nice comics came out. I think I need to start picking up some new titles after so many of my favorites got cancelled. I’m thinking of trying out the new Iron Man and Fantastic Four when they arrive, along with the big Justice League and Avengers relaunches in the coming months. Anybody have any comics they’d like to see me take on? Let me know in the comments!

Comic Book of the Week goes to the first half of Runaways. It’s as darling as I could have hoped for. But then it just ruins itself! For my money, I would definitely prefer a guest appearance by Julie Power over Doctor Doom in any comic book.

Runaways Julie 02

Molly agrees!

In comics I’m reading but not reviewing, another delightful issue of Rogue & Gambit hit the stands and it’s just as much fun as the rest. I can’t wait to see what writer Kelly Thompson does next for Marvel.

Also, I’ve dropped Marvel Two-in-One now that we know Fantastic Four is coming back. It’s an OK issue. Better than the previous issue, but I’ve decided to drop the series rather than continue to nitpick it to death.

Comic Reviews: All-New Wolverine #33, Amazing Spider-Man #798, Batman #44 and Runaways #8.

Batmetal Forever!

There’s a new Batmetal video! I think we can all rejoice in that!

These Batmetal videos are insane and hilarious and I will never not share them! All props to the fine folks at ArhyBES for making such masterpieces. Not for the faint of heart.
