Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/26/17

You know what I love to do on vacation? Nothing! Flame Con was a huge success last weekend for Gamer Girl & Vixen, and I had a super fun time in New York City. But now I’m just living out the rest of my vacation in calm and solitude. Gotta love that.

Had some great comics this week, from new Power Rangers to Harley Quinn, and a somewhat disappointing new issue of Chip Zdarsky’s Spider-Man. Not sure what happened there. Comic Book of the Week goes to the new Iceman, which is turning out to be a remarkably well-built comic.

Take that, Daken! You’re terrible!

Secret Empire is almost over, thankfully. It’s worn out it’s welcome. Nick Spencer now seems to just be narrating what amounts to just a giant battle of superheroes punching goons. It’ll all be over soon and we can move on with our lives.

Comic Reviews: Batgirl #14, Harley Quinn #26, Iceman #4, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #18 and Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #3.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/19/17

Happy Flame Con Weekend! Your favorite henchie is, at this very moment, showing off Gamer Girl & Vixen at Flame Con in Brooklyn! It’s the first major convention of my growing comic book career, and my team and I couldn’t be more excited! Wish us luck this weekend!

For some reason, there weren’t too many comics this week, but I’ve reviewed a couple anyway! We’ve got Aquaman and Batman in the same week, for one! And another nice issue of Silver Surfer. But Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of Mighty Thor for a pretty gnarly battle between good and fire!

War Thor 01

I am also reading DC’s Metal event comic. It’s pretty wild, so far, and plays pretty fast and loose with continuity. The problem is that DC’s continuity is kind of off the rails in Rebirth, as I’m not very sure what actually counts as stable continuity anymore. So when you write something like Metal, which is chock full of Easter Eggs and continuity-reliant reveals, some of the energy gets lost in the shuffle.

Like, I’m pretty sure we’re supposed to just ignore New 52 Hawkman? Is that right? Or…are we not and I’m reading too much into it? I have no idea.

On a sad note, did you people know that the previous issue of Unstoppable Wasp was actually it’s final issue?! I had no idea! Marvel stealth cancels their comics now without any sort of announcement, in order to keep perceived failures out of the headlines. Makes sense, but man, I really loved that series. I’m kind of bummed about it.

Comic Reviews: Aquaman #27, Batman #29, Mighty Thor #22 and Silver Surfer #13.

Multiple Man Did Not Really Return…Yet

Awhile ago, we were teased that Multiple Man would return in the pages of Astonishing X-Men #2. I was foolish enough to get my hopes up. The way Astonishing X-Men was being talked up as a big, important book made me think that anything was possible! Why not bring Multiple Man back from the dead after only a year or so? It would be fun!

But nope, he’s not really back.

Madrox Not Back 03

He got a costume change after dying

Sorry to burst everybody’s bubble, but the Multiple Man that appears at the very beginning of Astonishing X-Men #2 is just an illusion created by the Shadow King after the X-Men travel to the Astral Plane.

He plays the chorus in a stage play about the X-Men that the Shadow King is putting on.

Madrox Not Back 01

He did the thing he’s known for!

That’s about it.

So he’s not back from the dead. Though Rogue does drop a possible hint that there’s still hope.

Madrox Not Back 04

Don’t give me hope, Rogue

I think I’m going to hold on to that hope. Just for a little while.

6 LGBTQ Characters Who Should Get Their Own Comics

Welcome to Flame Con Week! And by that, I mean that I will be attending Flame Con in Brooklyn this weekend and wanted to celebrate! Flame Con is the largest LGBT comic convention on the East Coast, and I will be showing off Gamer Girl & Vixen! It’s our first big convention and we’re super excited. And to celebrate, I wanted to do another LGBTQ focused comic book list!

I’ve already written about my favorite LGBTQ characters and couples. This time, it’s about which of those characters I think deserve their own comic book series! There have been a ton of new LGBTQ comics hitting the stands — and not just Gamer Girl & Vixen. We’ve got Iceman, Midnighter, Harley Quinn and more. I’m excited for all of this diversity and acceptance, and I think a couple other characters could use their own books!

Join me after the jump for the six LGBTQ comic book characters who I think should get their own ongoing comic book!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/12/17

Next week is Flame Con! I’ll tell you all about it when I get home. It’s going to be the big convention debut of Gamer Girl & Vixen, and we are very excited! But we’ve got to wait, and until then, we can read the likes of Detective Comics, Harley Quinn, Squirrel Girl and even Ms. Marvel!

Comic Book of the Week goes to the first issue of writer Tom King’s new Mister Miracle series. This is the issue that everybody is talking about this week, and for damn good reason!

Darkseid Is 01

Can’t argue with that

I’m ready for Secret Empire to be over. These events are way too long. The latest issue is fine. It’s all still fine. But there’s no energy anymore. It doesn’t feel like the story is just going through the motions, per se. It’s more like…clearly this whole thing was orchestrated from on high, like all stories. But rather than really tell the story and the nitty gritty, we’re kind of just strolling through the big moments. We’re not reading this comic so much as it’s being told to us. I hope that explains it.

Comic Reviews: Detective Comics #962, Harley Quinn #25, Hulk #9, Mister Miracle #1, Ms. Marvel #21, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #23.
