Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/2/17

Bad news, everybody! Or, well, good news for me! I’ll be on vacation this upcoming week, making my first trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida! Should be a blast! But I’ll be gone all week and won’t have time to pick up or read any comic books. So for only the second time since I started doing these weekly reviews, I’m gonna have to skip a week. Sorry!

And this week is such an odd one, since it’s a Fifth Wednesday and there aren’t many comics out — at least not many comics that I’m reading. A nice Batman Annual from Tom King easily wins Comic Book of the Week, but it’s only competition (at least on my read pile) was a Darkhawk one-shot. I had a lot of hopes for that single issue, but King’s Batman can’t be beat.

True love

Not much else in comic book news on my end. No Big Events this week. But boy howdy, how about that Avengers: Infinity War trailer? More of that, please!

How I Would Do Seasons 2 and 3 of The Punisher

Earlier this week, I posted my review of The Punisher TV show on Netflix and ended with the suggestion that they should just film Garth Ennis’ Punisher MAX. I know I’m not alone in declaring that this is the best Punisher story of all time. I also think it’s hugely filmable. And movie and TV adaptions clearly hint at this greatness, but none have yet just grabbed this amazing, massive story and turned it into cinematic gold.

They should. And I’ll take a moment to tell them how it should be done.

Lock and load

I liked The Punisher on Netflix well enough, but it could have been better. It could have been so much better. Granted, I’m not in charge of the show and I don’t have any say in any of these matters. But I’ve got a blog and an opinion, and that’s all I really need!

Join me after the jump for how I would make seasons 2 and 3 of The Punisher. If we accept season 1 as canon now, I think we can still transition into the Punisher MAX material.

It’ll help if you already know the material I’m talking about. Definite SPOILERS for both the comic and the show. Let me know what you think about my ideas in the comments!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/25/17

We’ve got one of those weird, outlier, DC-only weeks again! I will gladly admit that I prefer Marvel Comics, but in an effort to be in any way impartial, I do keep trying to read more DC for these reviews! And this week is all DC Comics (with one non-Marvel exception).

We’ve got really fun issues of Detective Comics and Harley Quinn, but the real winner this week is the new issue of Batgirl. It had a lot of great moments, earning it Comic Book of the Week!

He’s a good mentor

Normally this is where I would review the latest issue of the Big Event, but I’ve decided to shake things up and actually review the individual Doomsday Clock issues. It’s a sequel to Watchmen, so I figure I owe it to…I dunno, the comic book gods? Either way, look below for my review of Doomsday Clock!

Comic Reviews: Batgirl #17, Detective Comics #969, Doomsday Clock #1, Harley Quinn #32 and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #21.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/18/17

Man oh man, this is quite the comic book fan weekend! Not only did the Justice League movie come out — which I very much enjoyed — but we’ve got the Punisher on Netflix! I’ll be watching that this weekend! And expect my Justice League review/list to go up on Wednesday!

Unfortunately, I didn’t read any Justice League or Punisher comics this week! Just normal stuff like Amazing Spider-Man and Mighty Thor! And Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of Batman for an absolutely fabulous story!

Catwoman Fool 01

Ain’t love grand?

I think it’s definitely safe to say I like Tom King’s work on Batman more than Scott Snyder. It’s really a shame that I was so cold to King when he started. I just didn’t like that Gotham/Gotham Girl stuff.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #791, Batman #35 and Mighty Thor #701.

6 Comics I Want to See Brian Michael Bendis Write for DC

The big comic book news of the month is that writer Brian Michael Bendis has finally made the jump from Marvel to DC! This is pretty huge news! Bendis is one of the most popular and noted comic book writers of the modern era, having had a big hand in shaping the Marvel Universe for the past decade and beyond. This is the guy who created Jessica Jones, turned the Avengers into a popular comic book franchise and recreated the wheel with Ultimate Spider-Man.

Also once considered my favorite comic book writer

It has always made sense for Bendis to eventually try out DC Comics for awhile. Lots of writers jump back and forth between the Big Two. Heck, Bendis was notable for having not done that. So it feels inevitable that some deal would be reached and his creative energy would be employed by the direct competition.

I, for one, am rather excited to see what Bendis writes at DC. I know I’ll be picking up his new comics, whatever they might be. And I just happened to have a couple suggestions.
